View Full Version : HDTV sets on the UK market already?

Is it true that many of the large plasma and rear projection televisions sold in the UK support high definition video?

Are any of the sets available here compatible with the high definition D-Theatre format that's available in the US?

Sorry if this is in the wrong forum, wasn't sure where to post it.

Many of them will run the picture but not to the full resolution. The Pioneer high-resolution screens run 720p and 1080i and so will certain Hitachi screens.

There's no point getting a 480 line display like the excellent Panasonic sixth generation plasma - that doesn't even display full PAL resolution...

Isn't D-Theater's full resolution 1080i? So if the Pioneer and Hitachi big screen tellys available in the UK can display 1080i does this mean they will be able to run the D-Theater picture at full resolution? :confused:

Another question, do 1080p displays and media exist at present?

yes, to the first one.

very few displays can manage 1080p at present, a few high-end projectors (Barco Cine 9 is one IIRC) and that's about it I think.

Most of the plasma's will scale 1080i down.

The res is something like 1900x1080.

Funnily enough the cheaper Hitachi's using Alis technology seem to get on quite well with 1080i.

avforums (http://www.avforums.com) has quite a lot of info...

One guy (http://www.avforums.com/forums/showthread.php?s=&threadid=89810&highlight=dvhs[/url) imported a d-vhs (hdtv player) over from the states and has run it quite successfully on his Hitachi.
