Hey all, I've just watched the Phantom Menace discs for 6 hours straight, and still 2 more hours of stuff left, just couldn't take it anymore :o
Did you notice that some of the deleted scenes and footage bits were inserted back into the movie.
Of course the most noticable is the new Courasant taxi flight through the city, but there are lots of new shots, at least 17 on my rough count, that are inserted into the pod race. When you watch it as a deleted scene, there is even more stuff, which I think they should have all put in there, but instead they cut it up into a million pieces and now you get this kind of dir's cut, no theatrical version, and deleted scenes comprise of theatrical release bits, this new DVD version, plus new scenes all together.
Oh, on the first disc, there is one of the best easter eggs I've ever seen, just press Stop and then play Title 3, it's DVD credits intercut with bloopers, like R2D2 crashing into something and falling all over the place, with some intentional Jar Jar animations just for the blooper! Like he is a real character laughing with the rest of the cast, or tripping over a fallen R2 D2 again, heh.
The menus are awesome! I couldn't get the Tatoine theme to work, only the other 2, and all those featurettes, 12 + 5 + 2 hidden + 1 del scenes + 1 one hour + 3 animatics + 1 vid game + 7 tv spots + 1 mus vid + 2 trailers + 7 del scenes all make up, not counting the commentary, over 4 hours and 50 mins of video, and there is not one bit similar, unlike in say Die Hard SEs, where there might be a similar line, or the same interview used in 2 or 3 diff featurettes, here everything is different material. Excellent extras! Too bad we've gotta wait till 2004-2005 for the original trilogy, so I'm just breaking and getting an LD player, screw it.
