i won't point out your spelling gaff...... others might tho'

the rising is much more lush(?), and layered than any of his previos records, quite different sounding.

personally, and i'm sure others will have different opinions try....

the river
darkness on the edge of town
born to run
born in the usa

nebraska and ghost of tom joad are solo, acoustic records

human touch and lucky town don't have the E street band and are probably left till later

Get the Essential album that has just been released, that will give you a far better idea about Springsteens back catalogue, you can make a far more balanced judgement from that  as to what to buy after that

Born to Run.

Most of his albums up to The River are really good.

The Wild, the Innocent and the E-Street Shuffle is the greatest album ever made. You must own this record.

It's nothing like the Rising though...

Got to agree with everyone about 'The Wild, the Innocent and the E Street Shuffle', easily Springsteens best album and very few artists had a run of better albums, from this through to 'The River', four albums with barely a duff track amongst them.

The tracklist is just solid brilliance from start to finish...

01. The E Street Shuffle, 02. 4th Of July, Asbury Park (Sandy), 03. Kitty's Back, 04. Wild Billy's Circus Story, 05. Incident On 57th Street, 06. Rosalita (Come Out Tonight), 07. New York City Serenade

I would say that Tunnel Of Love has the same "feel" to it as The Rising (musically not lyrically).

It's my favourite but they are all excellant.

Nebraska is amazing. For me that's his best album but it's not in the same style as The Rising. But you should definitely check that one out!

Depends on what mood I'm in but..

1) The River
2) Born to Run
3) The Wild, The Innocent and the E Street Shuffle
4) Greetings from Asbury Park
5) Darkness on the Edge of Town

Mind you there isn't many Springsteen tracks I don't like. My highlight of last year was seeing him live at Old Trafford Cricket Ground

Same here, apart from Let's Be Friends from The Rising. I almost always skip past it when it comes on.

My favourites are Born To Run and Tunnel Of Love. The Ghost Of Tom Joad had been getting a lot of play recently too. There is some fantastic story-telling on that album.

Although as previously said by many, The Essential is a great place to start. I wouldnt bother with the Greatest Hits album, as this ignores the first two albums.

Wild and the innocent is bruce's best, and its probably my favorite album ever.

I still like Born In The U.S.A best (too obvious that though!).

Darkness On The Edge Of Town would be my next vote and I reckon that if you picked your best 12 tracks from the "Tracks" box-set, you'd have one hell of an album!!!!

Yes - I haven't listened to it sober yet, as I tend to put it one when I've had a few and singalong (badly!). Its a cracking DVd though (I think!).

Just an after thought, anyone who is a big fan of The wild, the innocent and the E Street shuffle, should check out a band called Marah, esp the Kids from Philly album, the nearest thing I've heard to early Springsteen in many a year

The Barcelona DVD has some great moments, principally the reinventing of "Dancing In The Dark" as a hard rocker (complete with pogoing) and the gorgeous piano numbers that Bruce does solo. It's got a really nice feel to it, the band work well together and the choice of songs is reasonably eclectic. Nothing IMO quite as mindblowingly brilliant as "Jungleland" from the NYC Live DVD but it's excellent stuff.

Personally, my Springsteen top 10 is:

1. "Jungleland" from Born To Run
2. "Racing In The Streets" from Darkness On The Edge of Town
3. "Living Proof" from Lucky Town
4. "Incident on 57th Street" from Wild Innocent E St Shuffle
5. "The Rising" from The Rising
6. "Land of Hope and Dreams" from Live in NYC
7. "Dancing In The Dark" from Born In The USA
8. "The River" from The River
9. "Across The Border" from The Ghost of Tom Joad
10. "Spare Parts" from Tunnel Of Love

I've recently got into Bruce, after going through a big singer-songwriter phase. I started with the Essential, which is a great intro. My least favourite songs are probably some of the 80s stuff, although i still like it. I prefer the more intimate, acoustic stuff. Nebraska is so haunting.

The Rising is okay, a bit repetitive and long, although i LOVE 'Lonesome Day'. The songs sound so much better live on The Rising Tour Edition DVD [basically a sampler of the Live in Barcalona DVD, which will be my next Bruce purchase]

The next albums I think i'll get are Greetings From Asbury Park, NJ and maybe The River.

I love the wordiness, one of the best features of those songs...i'm a big fan of beat poetry, so I'm used to it :)

For You, Blinded by the Light and Spirit in the Night are 3 of the best songs on The Essential

Greetings is a fantastic album with Lost In The Flood and For You being the highlights for me.

As for The River, it has some of his best songs, but I dont pull it down off the shelf very often, mostly because I'm not too fussed with some of the rockers on it. You can look and I'm a rocker etc. Though the rest of the album makes up for them.

I wish that I was in your position with all these Springsteen albums to look forward to. :)

That's the one.... i heard it for the first time a few days ago!

Oh, when I was a little kid I never liked to eat,
Mama'd put things on my plate, I'd dump them on her feet,
But then one day she made this soup, I ate it all in bed,
I asked her what she put in it, and this is want she said.

Chorus:
Chicken lips and lizard hips and alligator eyes
Monkey legs and buzzard eggs and salamander thighs
Rabbit ears and camel rears and tasty toe-nail pies
Stir them all together, it's Mama's Soup Surprise.

I went into the bathroom and stood beside the sink,
I said I'm feeling slightly ill, I think I'd like a drink,
Mama said "I've just the thing, I'll get it in a wink,
It's full of lots of protein, and vitamins I think."

Chorus:
Chicken lips and lizard hips and alligator eyes
Monkey legs and buzzard eggs and salamander thighs
Rabbit ears and camel rears and tasty toe-nail pies
Stir them all together, it's Mama's Soup Surprise. :D

3 year bump....

As a very casual listener with a few iTunes credits kicking around ;) would I be better off getting The Essential Bruce Springsteen (http://www.thedvdforums.com/jump2.php?url=http://clkuk.tradedoubler.com/click?p(23708)a(60823)g(11695181)url(http://phobos.apple.com/WebObjects/MZStore.woa/wa/viewAlbum?id=258677751&s=143444)), which at £9.99 for 30 tracks seems a pretty good price, or buying the Born To Run & Born In The USA albums as a starting point as these seem to be highly rated in this thread (and the most well known)?

mikegray
01-08-2007, 18:29
I would buy the two albums - if you like the 30 tracks, you'll only end up buying them anyway.

Citysmith
01-08-2007, 18:57
It depends upon what you mean by a casual listener.

For anyone wanting an overview of Springsteens back catalogue, you would be better off going for the Essential. Born to Run is a classic and Born in the USA is 80's commercial success.

See what you like from the Essential then pick up Born to Run etc... See what you like then go down that route. As you can see from this thread, Springsteens best album is very mixed depending upon taste.

So cover your bases and go for the essential!!

Regardless of other peoples opinion, see what YOU like.

On another note, there's a new album and tour expected later on this year

mullethead

Thanks guys, Citysmith makes a good point so I think i'll go for the 'Essential' then pick up the CDs at a later date as they're usually in the HMV/Virgin sales at a reasonable price.

Tour rumours I heard were US arenas in October/November, European arenas in December, then back to the US for a spring/early summer stadium tour, and Europe again for a late summer of stadiums.

I don't often go to see artists more than once on the same tour, but I'll always make an exception for people like Springsteen.

And to add to that Spida, I reckon that this will be his last outing with the E Street Band. Went to see him twice on the last tour, but the seeger band were really my cup of tea.

If I had the money and the time, I'd have gone to see him a lot on the Devils and Dust tour, went over to Dublin to see him and that was magical :notworthy

Looking forward to seeing him and the band again, here's hoping for a show in Manchester

Yep, last E-Street band tour is what I've heard too. I would expect the O2 on the arena leg, with Wembley Stadium + 1 other in the UK for the summer leg.

I wasn't the biggest fan before the 2003 show at LCCC, but that 3 hours converted me! Seeger sessions was very enjoyable last year (if you discount the stupid way that tickets were sold - see the Prince thread!). I had some tickets for the D&D tour at the Albert Hall, but had to give them up as it was the day before my wedding.

Wedding! You missed one hell of a Show :p

I was at the LCCC, went to see Seeger gig at Manchester and then again at Sheffield. Had awful tickets for the Manchester show, but overall it was a good do. Met up at O'Sheas before hand, they were playing Springsteen records all afternoon, so had a good sing song before the show.

Steve said new material was being worked on too :notworthy

All we need is a full blown E-Street tour, just hope Clarence will be in a fit enough state to play as well. Last I read (though it was a while back) he's been having a fair few health problems.

PS mullethead - please consider picking up Springsteen Live 1975-1985...The Boss is ALL about live performances!

Bruce Springsteen's 'Magic' Set for October 2 Release on Columbia Records

'Magic,' Bruce Springsteen's new studio recording and his first with the E Street Band in five years, is set for release by Columbia Records on October 2, 2007. Produced and mixed by Brendan O'Brien, the album features eleven new Springsteen songs and was recorded at Southern Tracks Recording Studio in Atlanta, GA.

'Magic' Song Titles:

1. Radio Nowhere
2. You'll Be Comin' Down
3. Livin' in the Future
4. Your Own Worst Enemy
5. Gypsy Biker
6. Girls in Their Summer Clothes
7. I'll Work for Your Love
8. Magic
9. Last to Die
10. Long Walk Home
11. Devil's Arcade

'Magic' is the first new studio album by Bruce Springsteen and the E Street Band since 2002's GRAMMY Award-winning, multi-platinum, number one album 'The Rising' (Columbia Records), which was also produced by O'Brien.

Bruce Springsteen's longtime manager Jon Landau said, "'Magic' is a high energy rock CD. It's light on its feet, incredibly well played by Bruce and the members of the E Street Band, and, as always, has plenty to say. It's also immensely entertaining. 'Magic' is the third collaboration between Bruce and Brendan O'Brien and is a culmination of their very productive creative relationship."

I agree with this and also The River.

Saw him first time at Manchester Apollo in 1981 (missed the MCFC v Spurs FA cup Final replay) and most tours since.

Best track Lost in the Flood live from the Hammersmith CD
