View Full Version : New York Trip: Dvd And Computer Shop Recommendations?
Friend is going to New York for a few days soon and can pick up some stuff for me if I want it - given the current exchange rate and US prices I may get a DVD writer and hard drive plus some DVDs.
Is there a shop for computer components that anyone would recommend that has a good range in stock and is reasonably priced. Doesn't matter too much about having knowledgable staff as I will supply the full spec for the items including part numbers.
For DVDs, any shop in particular that is good value on that front?
Thanks in advance for responses.

Forget DVDs. You can get them cheaper over the internet in the UK than you can by purchasing them in a New York store, trust me.
Hardware, you may be more lucky. There is a CompUSA (on 5th Avenue I think), they are generally the best stocked and have reasonable prices.

Get your mate to try these. They are supposed to be good and in a good location too. You can have a look at their website here http://www.bhphotovideo.com/ to see what they have to offer.

agree totally with floop. don't expect bargains on the dvd front unless you catch the tail end of the winter sales.
places like Wal-mart and best buy will probably have reasonable deals on new releases.
DVD's can be cheaper but you have to know where to get them;
J and R (http://www.jandr.com) usually sell current release region 1 DVD's in their stores from $15 to $20.

Remember to account for the sales tax on top. Unlike many countries, you cannot claim NYC sales tax back when leaving the US.
I'd agree you can find some reasonable prices in Walmart - especially on twin packs - but the amount you would be saving would be so minimal (£2 or £3 tops in my experience) I wouldn't ask my friend to go out of their way about it.
You'd get a better saving on hardware though, just make sure your friend doesn't get stung for import duties when returning to the UK!

There's no walmart anywhere near NYC though iirc.....
CompUSA on 5th was pretty good, there was another computer shop on 5th too I think, both were fairly cheap....

You are right - Walmart's are out of town.
HOWEVER
There is one next to Woodbury Commons in New Jersey.
Woodbury Commons is an premium outlet stores village. If you are into brand-name label fashion at huge discount prices, it's worth a look - it's bloody huge, every brand name / label is represented there, the prices are unbeatable, and there are regular buses to it from the Port Authority.
More info on Woodbury Commons here:

Damn, we were going to go to Woodbury Common, but didn't in the end, if I'd known there was a Walmart there, I'd have been like a shot :D

It is not advertised as part of Woodbury Commons, as it doesn't meet their 'Premium Outlet' image, but it is about a 5 minute walk from the outlet stores!
Good luck next time...

Wrong if you know when and where.
Filled up my case nicely with all the latest dvds and games at xmas. Tell your mate to go down to J&R on a friday after 11.30 - turn left on to Broadway at the store and walk down on the left hand side of the street for 200m or so. He'll come to a Macdonalds and then he'll hit loads of street sellers almost immediately. There's a stall there with piles of the latest dvds all at $15 ( just over £8) - very few will be older than a month so you won't get much back catalogue stuff. All the boxsets are also dirt cheap - I picked up OZ season 2 for $30 and Sopranos Season 4 for $50. All Video games are $40. The stall will be totally crowded and everything shifts like hot cakes - so the earlier your guy gets there the better. I was there for 2 weeks and stocked up both fridays
Oh once he's done there get him to head for china town should you require any of the latest cinema releases for a couple of quid each if you know what I mean ;)
I'm going to pick myself up a digital camera out there, probably pop along to B&H Photo for an Olympus 5060 / 50.
Boink!

Was there last March and it's a great store. Some great bargains then and will be even more so now.
Got a Canon Powershot S400, a 64 & 256 memory card all in for £300. Absolute bargain!

Floop - does a bus from Manhattan take long to get there?
Am over there in March and thinking of venturing out - I heart Wal-Mart!
 for J&R - excellent store!
There's a Circuit City too @ Union Square.

I have never taken the bus, though know it exists. I would be surprised if it takes longer than 90 minutes each way.
Found this info here:

or alternatively here:

Hope this helps.

Perfect, thank you!
90 mins sounds about right given that on the Woodbury Common site they say it's about 60 mins north of NY - factor in a slower journey by bus.
Just to give some feedback now that friend is back:
J&R excellent - wide range of kit and competitive prices. Sells all sorts of multimedia stuff. Has a good range of portable DVD players at prices in the $250 range ie half the UK price. DVD prices competitive and sub $20 for new releases. Got a few from my hitlist and very satisfactory. However, for the older releases that are now in BOGOFF and other deals over here not too much in it, but still cheaper there - typically about £5 equivalent.
CompUsa - outstanding - makes anything in this country look like a corner shop. But some stock is only available from the website so worth checking in advance (ie what I wanted wasn't available in-store).
Overall, just makes you realise how much we are ripped off. Basically $1 there will cost you nearly £1 here for the same thing, or bordering on nearly half the cost in the US.
Thanks very much for the responses. Now I think I need to go there in person.
I was in that Woodbury Common place about 3 years ago, the sony store is great and VERY cheap, picked up a perfect refurbished discman that was half the price i would of payed over here, back when my currency was very weak against the dollar and all

Has anyone bought anything in the Timberland store at Woodbury Common.
I am off to NY in a couple of months and wanted a new pair of boots. I was going to buy some before I went so I can break them in before I go, but I will be gutted if I see them way cheaper at Woodbury Common

Yes, bought loads from there in the past.
Go there first because it can get a busier than some of the other stores. generally speaking the £120 signature boots are $80 and as far as i can remember there are no boots above that price.

Cheers.
Looks like I'll hang on until I go there, then. I'll make sure I take a big suitcase with me to NY that is only a quarter full on the way out :)
