According to DVD File, the current titles fighting it out for top spot of the DVD (videoscan) sales chart are 'The Mummy Returns' Widescreen and 'The Mummy Returns' Pan & Scan, and the top spot went to which version?

'The Mummy Returns' Widescreen...of course, by a massive margin (i thinks not) of 2%.

Just goes to show as much as the hardcore detest P&S, it's selling by the bucketload, even when given the choice of a superior version.

Just goes to prove that 'The Mummy Returns' isn't really a film for the seriours film fan.

Surely more down to the fact that widescreen TV sets haven't caught on as well in the states (I think?)

Huge 4:3's are the order of the day.

it could also be due to the major retailers only stocking the P&S version ith little support for the w/screen version

When I was in the US recently, I went to an electronics store, namely Circuit City. They stock mostly 4:3 ratio sets, but also have their fair share of HDTV compatible widescreen sets, which are usually rear projection.

A lot of US buyers cite the cost of widescreen TV's as an excuse for not buying them, but that plainly isn't true from my experience. For example, you can buy a 50 odd inch HDTV compatible, 16:9, rear projection TV in circuit city for $2499, which equates to roughly £1700-£1800. That's cheaper than the equivalent TV in the UK, so I can't see what they're problem is.

I noticed that both HBO and Fox transmit programmes in widescreen format on cable in the US, so it isn't a lack of material that's holding things up, it's consumers.

Any US members of the forums care to give their opinions on the subject?
