i finally walked into the asian shop in cheltenham today, which i've walked past for years but always presumed was more of a novelty store and not asian owned etc. so i went in today, and found thousands of vcds and tons of dvds. this is instant delight as i dont like the idea of ordering korean/japanese etc movies from the net due to lack of credit card, postage costs (taxation etc) and waiting for it to arrive.

so just checking what the prices are like in comparison, and whether you guys would use the place

battle royale ii : £12
natural city (w/ metal tin) : £24
2009 ... LE (huge box w/ book) : £35
shaolin soccer vcd : £6
black mask vcd : £4

prices seem pretty good to me (we bought everything on the list except for 2009) considering its just walking up the road. the lady who ran it said she goes to camden's electric ballroom and sells there, so i'm guessing some of you might know her?

well im never employed for long (last job lasted a week, short contract) and im £700 into an overdraft. the fact i went out and spent lots of money today was.. a stupid idea, but one i enjoyed nonetheless.

i'm not likely to buy VCDs that often, as a format i think its ok compared to VHS, but i think £10 is a bit much for it now. i dont mind the £4 on the odd flick tho, and the packaging is rather nice. i saw the films on places like yesasia are a bit cheaper, but from memory postage from asia is massive and slow to the uk? i don't mind paying a few quid more for a classy boxset i know i can walk into town and have that day, rather than wait for it to arrive (if it does, knowing my postal luck) with extra postage to pay etc etc.

and im awfully bleedin tempted by wonderful days for £20 :D and the 2009 boxset. and a nice print of kill bill when it hits. and black hawk down superbit 3disc. sigh. a credit card would prove too much temptation alas :D

Shipping from Yes Asia is free if you spend more than $49 and takes around 5 - 8 days for delivery.

Hi Jay
Spend over $49 (£26 ish) at Yesasia (Hardly difficult with all the fantastic titles they stock), and postage is free. As for slow, well once despatched in my experience it's never more than a few days.

Still, as you say, you'd rather not have a cc, and you have the convenience of walking out that minute with your purchase (Which you are paying heavily for the convenience), if you're happy with that - then that's cool:) No worse than buying CD's from HMV really.

edit - beaten to giving the info by Jimmyboy;)

JayX
14-02-2004, 23:44
i presumed they shipped by surface on the free shipping thing, so learnt something new :) im sure in the future it'll be a lot easier, but im lookin forward to browsing the shop once a week and chatting to the woman who owns the place. not often u find a shop keeper that on mention of Ichi doesn't 1. look confused or 2. look repelled. she says she supplies to some of the online places, be interested to know which ones.

atm i'm happy with spending a bit more money, means i'll be a bit more refined with my purchases i hope, rather than order any ol' crap cos it has a nice cover or something (play/usa.com know all about this :D ).

The Wishing Stairs - aka Whispering Corridors 3

This is the third entry in the Korean high-school horror series after Whispering Corridors and Memento Mori. I've not seen the first movie yet (the Korean edition does not have English subtitles, though there is a subtitled Thai edition available) but I liked Memento Mori very much indeed.
Wishing Stairs involves a new set of characters and is a standalone film, you really don't need to have seen either of the earlier films in the series.

Story
The story involves a tale of two school girls (So-hee & Jin-sung)who share a close relationship, although the love felt by one (So-hee) may be unrequited by the other (Jin-sung). Both girls take ballet lessons, but So-hee seems set to take the prize in a competition that will lead one to a Russian ballet school.
There is a flight of 28 stone stairs in the school grounds where tradition states that if a person climbs the stairs counting each step out loud, they will reach a 29th stair and be able to call upon a Fox Spirit to grant a wish.
Three wishes will be made - one to win the ballet competition, one for So-hee always to be by Jin-sung's side and the third will be made by a fat and unpopular girl desperate to lose weight....

The Film
It is essentially a tale of love and death in a girl school. Critical reaction seems to have been mixed, with some Memento Mori fans left disappointed while others have been delighted with the film. It does seem that the film series consists of variations on a single theme with little progression, but I don't have a problem with that.

While Memento Mori was concerned with creating an increasing air of dreamlike mystery throughout its running time, Wishing Stairs plays as a more straightforward high-school movie that then becomes a mainstream horror flick. It is a very well-directed film with some beautifully composed shots and the director seems to understand the requirements of a horror film in terms of pacing and use of silences. Was it scary? yes, I think it was. My wife was certainly creeped out and there were some great shock sequences. The influence of recent Japanese horror was evident, but not slavishly so - as in the case of Phone.

The three main performances are excellent and the characters sympathetic and likeable while still displaying the usual human weaknesses. There also seem to be some references to European horror classics. The ballet scenes in the first half brought Suspiria to mind, and there was also what looked like a deliberate reference to Don't Look Now. Cool, I like that.

The DVD
The Korean edition is a two-disk set with English subtitles on the feature. The keepcase comes in a sturdy card slipcase.
The menus are some of the best I've seen and use the cartoonish drawings of Hae-ju (the fat girl). Top marks for presentation!

It is packed with extras, but I haven't spent much time on these yet. The deleted scenes are extensive and worth a visit immediately after you've seen the film. Some characterisation elements were lost when the movie was tightened up for pacing and I certainly wouldn't mind seeing a 2-hour plus cut with those scenes re-inserted. But I don't think the editing down has harmed the film.

The DD5.1 audio mix is immersive in the typical Korean way (I love Korean surround mixes) with puh-lenty of base in the last half. There are also some nice rain effects, which are de rigeur for a Korean film.

The video transfer is 1.85:1 and looks awesome. It is a visually beautiful film and the DVD shows this off to the best effect.

Score - I might revise this on a second viewing, but 7.5/10, just off 8/10.

It is not particularly original and Memento Mori is still the superior film. But there is an awful lot to to like here. The pacing is tight and the director (a first-timer, I believe) shows real talent for the genre with some particulalry effective sequences. Yup, ballet shoes can be scary! I was half-prepared to be disappointed, but this comes recommended.

Thanks for your review, mrsteve. :) From your review, it sounds as if WISHING STAIRS achieves something in between the technically-hampered WHISPERING CORRIDORS, which was rather plot-driven, and the more artistically-accomplished MEMENTO MORI, which created more of a mood. Don't get your hopes up too much about the new II Mare Release.

Darcy -
The subtitles are a bit better than they were, but in truth they're still pretty bad. It's not as distracting as the old subtitles, and a little bit more of the original meaning of the dialogue comes through, but basically they've been upgraded from "one of the worst set of subtitles I've ever seen" to "middling bad".

That was all I really noticed as well, though I found that rather annoying. I don't tend to read subs very closey anyway, just scan read them. :)

Its not the edko subs that are the problem its the spectrum (korean subs) that need code breaking skills to decypher ... If I hadn't watch the edko version first then I don't believe I would have understood the Korean Version as well as I did.

I think I remember reading that the subs on the edko release although gramatically correct, aren't as close to actual meaning of what's said as the korean subs. I'm going to keep the Edko release and buy the Korean SE and just watch the one I prefer tbh.

The Edko disc subs are closer to dubtitles? Maybe thats why the korean disc is less understandable?

A GOOD LAWYER'S WIFE (not a review, but a few thoughts)

Is Moon So-ri the most daring actress working in South Korean cinema today? I'd have to say yes after watching her performance in A GOOD LAWYER'S WIFE. While I don't know that this performance would top her phenomenal turn in OASIS, she is superb as the frustrated wife of an emotionally-distant, successful lawyer. Moon So-ri's character is a dutiful wife and a doting mother who lives a comfortable existence in her upscale neighborhood. Yet one by one, things begin to fall apart. Emotionally and sexually neglected by her husband, who is busy with his own mistress, the bored wife begins to respond to the curious advances of the troubled teenage boy who lives next door . . . .

A good mixture of character study and social crticism, A GOOD LAWYER'S WIFE pulls no punches in portraying marriage and family as the least stable element of these characters' lives. Excellent characters, excellent filming, and an ending that is unexpectedly (and unconventionally) upbeat. And well worth a watch for yet another superb performance from Moon So-ri.
It's a difficult film to watch in some places, though, I'll warn you. :(

And Ono, I'm sure you'd have plenty to say about in your babewatch after seeing this one. :p

I'll edit some screengrabs into this post later this evening.

Review: Derek Elley

A Korean swordplay movie that comes the closest of any Korean movie so far in reaching the excellence of Hong Kong examples, "The Legend of the Evil Lake" is a thoroughly entertaining ride readymade for Western distribs specializing in East Asian genre fare. Cleanly told yarn of an evil force unleashed during the dying days of the Shilla dynasty hardly pauses for breath during its trim 92 minutes and doesn't wear out the viewer with an excess of f/x. Pic was a moderate success locally at the end of last year, with some 500,000 admissions (around $3 million).
Though it's produced at least one very good costume action-drama ("Musa," 2001) plus the gutsy swordfest "Sword in the Moon" (2003), South Korea's film industry has yet to match the devil-may-care brio of Hong Kong swordplay movies. "Legend," shot in China and with Hong Kong action ace Yuen Tak supervising fight chores, wisely focuses on a small group of characters, keeps its storyline uncomplicated and makes a virtue out of relatively simple wire-work and CGI.

Prelude, set in 57 B.C. at the end of the "tribal age of darkness," shows Shilla founder Park Hyokkose wiping out the Moon Tribe and imprisoning the spirit of its leader, Auta, in the earth with a magic sword. Flash-forward almost a thousand years, to A.D. 896, and the Shilla, under Queen Chinsong (Kim Hye-ri), are in deep trouble, with rebels everywhere.

The queen's loyal general, Biharang (Jeong Jun-ho), holds back popular unrest, though he privately thinks the monarchy should be abolished. Also, to the disappointment of the queen (who loves him) and another general, Bang (who mistrusts him), Biharang has fallen for a cute peasant girl, Jaunbi (Kim Hyo-jin), whose dad was executed for sympathizing with the rebels.

When Bang tries to murder Jaunbi, she draws the magic sword out of the ground unleashing Auta's angry spirit. Possessed by Auta's demon, Jaunbi flies around wreaking havoc.

Jeong cuts a suitably conflicted heroic figure as Biharang and handles himself well in the action sequences, which are slick and effective, helped by atmospheric widescreen lensing and a chivalrous score. Kim Hyo-jin impresses more as the possessed Jaunbi than as the peasant babe, but it's Kim Hye-ri, as the regal, lovelorn queen, who steals the distaff acting honors.

Helmer Lee Kwang-hoon, best known for the effects-heavy contempo romance, "Ghost in Love" (1998), keeps things on the move without undue haste, aided by Lee Hyeon-mi's smooth editing.

Speaking strictly for my own tastes, I knew I wouldn't want to dish out the money required for this Korean release when I read the following:
In fact the striking visuals are the film's major strength, with many shots using mirrors as a clever aid to composition. Unfortunately, the quality of the script does not match the standard of the images. The murder mystery plot, although given an extra twist by some interesting supernatural concepts, is too simplistic to satisfy and fails to generate any real suspense.
Barry Woodcock
But if you appreciate films for their visual quality, maybe this one's for you. ;)

i like the sound of Skyline Cruisers, and there's a few different versions. this seems to be the cheapest of the DVDs, but is it any good print wise? http://global.yesasia.com/en/PrdDept.aspx/pid-1001806703/code-c/section-videos/

if that prints rubbish, is the korean dvd ok? cheers

Do you have lost in time http://global.yesasia.com/en/PrdDept.aspx/pid-1003119205/did-0/code-c/section-videos/ it's easily worth the extra £2.50 or so. I know a lot of people from this thread including me, loved it :)

will look up lost in time too, i briefly looked at it when i first went on the site. i changed my post now (fickle? moi? :) ) as i'll probably buy skyline chasers in the 3@$7.99 deal in a few weeks time along with another disc.

The HK edition has a non-anamorphic picture, I'm afraid, though it is reported as anamorphic - had a copy or two and traded them on.
The film itself is not bad and features an appearance by Bae do-na.

I think I'm one of the few who actually prefers RING VIRUS to the Japanese RINGU and of course, the American RING. Perhaps because RING VIRUS is more faithful to the novel on which all of these films were based, I found the themes and imagery to be more sophisticated and consistent. Is it as technically accomplished as RINGU? Probably not. But I still think it's excellent.

There's a very old thread at BnB where RING VIRUS is given both the thumbs up and the thumbs down. My comments are the last ones on page 2, if you're looking for at least one positive remark about the film. :D

Anybody here know where I might find some fansubs for one of Jeon Do-yeon's early films called A PROMISE? (none on kloofy's). The HK DVD only has Chinese subs. It's not supposed to be a great film, but still, I wouldn't mind seeing it as long as I halfway knew what was going on/being said.

Well, I'm currently trying to "catch up" on a few slightly older K movies, and with "My Boss My Hero" available for just over £4 delivered from DDDHouse, I thought why not:)
It's already reviewed way back, but it was the Korean release that was reviewed, and this is the HK one - so I thought a few points might be useful to someone.
Visually the packaging looks good - it comes in a glossy slipcase, so far so good, a glance at the back though shows it's a DVD-5. Now this doesn't necessarily mean bad, however in this case, whether or not because of the format - there are very serious lackings.
The picture is anamorphic and not so bad. There are problems if you look for them, but on the whole it's a crisp enough image with good colour.
The sound is a different matter. I have honestly never heard a worse soundtrack on any dvd. There's a choice of DD 2.0 Korean, DD 5.1 Korean or Cantonese 2.0. The default is DD2.0, and you would think that the best option would be to change to DD 5.1 - not in this case. I don't know what this movie was filmed in, but the 5.1 sounds like it was recorded in a tin room, and the surround simply sounds like mono with an echo effect fed to all speakers. In addition, there is a background "roar" which rises and falls all the time. I had to switch back to stereo, and even then it sounds a bit "tape recorder like"

The movie itself - personally I found a bit stinted, and parts had the feel of a "fly-on-the-wall" documentary - but it was probably filmed like this - and such things are always personal and subjective. As already said in Cirrus's review, this movie scores high in the hot babe eye candy stakes.
Overall it's not a bad movie, but personally I don't think it's one of the best.
I daresay many of us on here already have a copy, but if pressured for a recommendation - I would spend that bit more and get the Korean copy, though at the price it is, DDDHouse should be considered if cost is important :)

I just finished watching ...ing and found it excellent, for me at least even better than Untold Scandal, I hadn't heard much about it before tbh and bought it for the LE packaging, it without doubt stands as a worthwhile purchase LE packaging or not.
It was a very moving film, the daughter (who I think I recongise from A Tale of Two Sisters) and her mother are acted out very well as is the romantic interest.
The thing I loved about this though was how understated it was, normally with films of this type you have OTT acting and background music intended to try and make you feel moved, yet this managed to move me without seemingly trying. I would give it 8.5/10 on first viewing, but after I've had time to brew over the events in the film I may bump this up to a 9.

Naff film, I always felt the director of Sassy Girl had been hideously over rated and this film proves it.

Unimaginative, clichéd & manipulative pretty much sums it up.

5/10 - and 3 of those points go to the punk kid who whacks that guy in the nuts. Oh and how many gay references were there in the film ?

Not as far as I know, all packages from Yesasia are resent from within the UK, so customs should never be an issue. All my packages have always had royal mail stamps on them.

As for ...ing I think I will bump up the score to a 9, for me one of the best k-films I've had the chance to watch and up there with MSG, Il Mare and the like. As for the title I read a nice little theory over at Darcy's, ...ing is added to verbs to signify that an action is taking place and this film is about Mina doing things and enjoying her life rather than accept the inevitable.

I think Yesasia mean that the price you pay is inclusive of any import taxes. Their UK office will pay any taxes due when the shipments reach them before sending them on to you, the grateful customer. You won't be hit for anything more than the stated price on their site.

... ing (R3 Korean Limited Edition Packaging)

Another excellent romantic melodrama. Agree with richardp about it being understated - but not as much as Christmas in August which was probably too understated for my tastes.

Stylishly shot with a lovely soundtrack this film tells of reclusive high school girl Mina who we find out very early on is terminally ill and been in and out of hospital for much of her young life. Also handicapped by a deformed left hand which is forever hidden inside mittens, she is very much on her own at her new school. Her widowed mother is her best friend.

One day, college photography student Yong-jae moves into the flat below and they gradually develop a friendship which leads onto mutual attraction and then love.

Most people can guess the ending without even watching it (except for a small twist) but this film is no less watchable for the performances from the two extremely photogenic leads and Mina's mother. Im Su-jeong from A Tale of Two Sisters is just so well cast for this. She already looks frail but a cute face as well just means that you can't help feeling for her. Relative newcomer Kim Rae-won also convinces as the happy go lucky dashing neighbour.

Some very well shot scenes including one in the rain, one in a ballet class and one under the water this is a very promising debut for the director. Not as heartbreakingly weepy as Lovers' Concerto but close. The photographs taken to record their time together were stunning and my heart melted when I saw them hanging on the student's wall.

I found this to be a very well acted and watchable movie. Not sure I would be in a hurry to rewatch it but I am glad that I have watched it.

One thing that is going to bug me though:

what the hell does the title have to do with the film???

Ono gives this 8 out of 10

Packaging wise - it comes with a small binder and the 2-disc amaray inside is clear but they have thoughtfully provided the cover for the amaray as well so you can slot it in. <s>There is some other gumpth but I can't be arsed to open it.</s> Edit: Now opened. It contains some nice polaroid type cards with pictures from the film along with some postcards of the beautiful drawings done by Mina. Lovely stuff.

Im Su-jeong - extremely cute

Ono's Babewatch &copy: Im Su-joeng is, as mentioned, very photogenic. She looked extremely cute in the photos contained within the film. She does have a slightly funny nose and a dodgy top lip but not too bad. 7 out of 10

i especially liked the overhead shot of the crossing in the rain, very very nice. i presumed ...ing stood for something like loving etc so i like the above mentioned theory.

as for the spoiler...

at first, i hated it. i looked at it from the side of kim rae-won and thought it made him look bad for accepting the money, and was intrigued on what point he grew to love her.. but then i looked at it from the pov of the mother just trying to do something nice for her daughter before she passed away.. then i think that destroyed me internally :) i love the way they hid the hand from view until right at the end too. i thought i missed it at the beginning, but on rewind i couldn't really see anything (when kim rae-won grabbed her and looked shocked)

Ono
21-02-2004, 20:03
Yeah, the hand was well hidden throughout and I did actually give up hope getting to see it. I thought it might have been webbed like the turtle theme throughout the film.

The overhead bit panning down to the point in my picture and the guy's face was superb and beautifully done.

One of the things I've realised about ...ing after reflection is that I don't think we actually see Mina pass away, the film ends with her presumably still in a coma. So I guess if you are optimistic Mina could conceivably wake up eventually.

Having a hard time deciding if this new Korean film looks good or not:

Au Revoir, UFO (official website here) (http://www.2004ufo.co.kr)

The film stars Lee Beom Soo (SINGLES, OH! BROTHERS) as a bus driver and radio show host who meets and becomes smitten with a beautiful blind girl (Lee Eun Joo, from LOVER'S CONCERTO and VIRGIN STRIPPED BARE BY HER BACHELORS). But the relationship becomes complicated due to the bus driver's falsely representing his identity to the girl.

http://home.earthlink.net/~mimmack/sitebuildercontent/sitebuilderpictures/aurevoir.jpg

The title seemed bizarre to me, but I think UFO is supposed to refer to the radio station, and not some sort of alien encounter. ;) Storyline looks a kind of sappy, too. But both leads are excellent actors, especially Lee Eun Joo, whose feisty charm really stole the show in LOVER'S CONCERTO. The film has only recently been released in Korean theatres, so it's not available on DVD yet. Maybe around May?

Anybody else have any info on this one? Reviews?

Au Revoir, UFO (official website here) (http://www.2004ufo.co.kr)

The film stars Lee Beom Soo (SINGLES, OH! BROTHERS) as a bus driver and radio show host who meets and becomes smitten with a beautiful blind girl (Lee Eun Joo, from LOVER'S CONCERTO and VIRGIN STRIPPED BARE BY HER BACHELORS). But the relationship becomes complicated due to the bus driver's falsely representing his identity to the girl.

Reviews?

First of all, I wanna say hello to all

I'm kind of shy Maybe that's why^^; you know

Ok. I will let u know about the film now 68Monkey!!
I went to see 'Hello U.F.O" last week and I really liked it.
The way of description between bus driver (Lee, Bum Soo) and
blind girl (Lee, Eun Joo) is smooth, easliy and pretty moving.
Like you said, U.F.O is not big deal in this film.
If u were fan of Korean romantic comedy, don,t ever miss this film.

Strongly recommended^^

LOL, you've gotta love Koreans :D

Jeon Ji-Hyun Beats Lee Hyo-lee in Battle of the Backsides

http://marmot.blogs.com/korea/lee_hyori_vs_chun_jihyun.jpg

"I've got the best bum!"

Top stars Jeon Ji-hyun and Lee Hyo-lee recently faced off in a heated "Battle of the Butts." The struggle took its cue from the recent "Best Body" fad making waves among Korean Internet users.

In the first round of this "Clash of the Keisters," Jeon finished on top after a closely-fought battle, or so says a survey conducted by casual clothes brand EXR, MyClub, and Good Diet that asked participants, "Which entertainer has the sexiest rear-end?" Lasting 10 days, the survey netted 29,467 responses, and with 41 percent "back"ing Jeon Ji-hyun, she ascends the "Best Bum" throne, beating out Lee Hyo-lee, who was able to garner only 30 percent support.

Meanwhile, it was a brutal struggle in the men's section, too, with two of the country's most popular entertainers -- Kwon Sang-woo and Rain -- facing off in "rump rumble" of their own. Kwon barely managed to beat out Rain with a grand vote total of 11,020 (37 percent) to 9,488.

The head of a well-known plastic surgery clinic in Seoul's Apgujeong-dong put it this way: "Jeon Ji-hyun's and Kwon Sang-woo's buttocks, from a medical perspective, are quite unusual, statistically speaking." This would seem to lead credibility to the questionnaire's results.

Well I thought should make a post after a short while :D

Been catching up on a few films I have to see and watched Uninvited and Tale Of 2 Sisters.

Uninvited was good but I felt 30minutes could have been shaved off it or more characterisation should have been added. Whilst the acting was uniformly solid by everyone in the film I didn't care what happened to anyone. I didn't even care at the end when

JJH threw herself off the building at the end, didn't blink an eyelid at it :|

A very emotionless film.

As for Tale Of 2 Sisters, I absolutely loved this. A genuinely spooky film with a great story and great child actors. I love the way the film had no conclusive ending and is open to many interpretations. Certainly had me thinking, especially in the last 20 minutes of the film. One I shall be watching again

Two high school girls doing prostitution for traveling Europe.
Somehow, one of their father(Who is cop) become a witness

Sounds pretty interesting isn't it?
Kim Ki Duk's got a award for best director in Berlin Internatinal

This is low budget film just like Kim's previous work. Kim completed this one only in 11 days. Can u believe it?

It.s kind of weird that the review above seems really good.

Romantic Worriors is most terrible film that I've ever seen in recent years. Of course, this is my taste as Korean.
But there is somethin that u guys must know.
Most Korean critics and audiences didn't like this film that much.
This film is nothing but the childish humor, stupid sex code, curse, swearing, and some decent fighting scenes.

I kind realized that certain Korean crap can be tempting for westerners.( Non Korean native I mean)
Well, after all, I strongly suggest u that don,t waste ur any penny on this.

Got my Il Mare SE ....

The book-style packaging is very nice. The transfer is an improvement on the older HK and Kr releases but not up to the standard we've gotten used to from K releases. The subs, as Kanedaa has already shown, are better than the first K release but still not as good as the HK subs (why didn't they just license the HK subs????)

On the extras front, we get a 36-minute making of, a 23-minute feature which I think is the director and writer re-visiting the locations used in the film, two interviews with the director and interviews with Lee Jung-jae and JJH (only 3 minutes), a 7-minute feature about the editing process, storyboards (which are quite artisitic), galleries containing pre-production art and on-set stills, and the usual trailers and music videos.

PS Welcome backbeat

Well it wasn't a case of not liking it, I thought it was a good film just that it was very cold and you didn't care about the characters. I dont think it was that downbeat, certainly nothing to rival Sympathy For Mr Vengeance (or even a hollywood film like Unforgiven) and the truck scene didnt really shock me either, it was signposted in the first flashback scene so I was expecting it.

Basically it was a good film but they should have either cut 30minutes from it or added more characterisation.

The Korean release of The Uninvited runs for 127 minutes and 21 seconds. The packaging just says 2Hrs which may be where the 120 minutes came from. Based on a quick skim the transfer looks nicely hued and 'textured' ... I'd be very surprised if the non-anamorphic HK release looks as good.

You can still get the LE (with the book for about £22 delivered from DVDAsian (http://www.dvdasian.com/cgi-bin/dvdasian/14786.html?id=y3NEraUb).

The SE (no book) would cost about £18 delivered.

i think its only a few pounds more locally, so thats not too bad. i'm gonna take a hires photo of her stock and see whats worth buying there and whats worth ordering online. as stated before, i don't wanna do any harm to a local person trying to sell kr/jap/cn films here by always ordering off the net. hmv/virgin etc can go swivel, but the smaller shops need to survive somehow.

the gamera boxset is £180 compared to $210 on yesasia. back in the day of 1.6$=1£ currency, it wouldn't be so bad but with the american economy the way it is, it comes out a lot lot cheaper to buy online :)

In my quest to "catch-up" on some of the older titles, I've just finished
watching Hi Dharma. It's already been reviewed so I won't post too much on this,
but overall I was pleased.
To recap the storyline - a group of gangsters hide out in a remote monastery.
The monks aren't too impressed, and both sides challenge each other to "games"
to decide if they stay or go. Do attitudes on both sides change as the movie
progresses? Can you guess the ending? I won't spoil anything for those who
haven't seen it:)
It isn't exactly "laugh out loud" humour - I would say it's best regarded as
light hearted, however this is taking nothing away from the film. The HK release
I watched is indeed very good quality for a DVD5, in the many outdoor woodland
scenes, you feel you are there as you are surrounded by birdsong or crickets.
The location filming is spot-on, and the landscapes/nature are really
attractive.
Maybe I wouldn't pay "new release" price for this one, but at £4 from DDDHouse
at the moment, I would recommend this to anyone who hasn't yet seen it. A
Hollywood remake is on the cards - hmmmm!

As a friend said recently, Hasn't this already been done? I believe it was called SISTER ACT. ;)

But yes, Hi Dharma is decent fun if the price is right. :)
(And yet another father-figure role for veteran Korean actor Kim In-mun, who was most recently seen as the lawyer's father in A GOOD LAWYER'S WIFE).

I got Sky of Love (http://global.yesasia.com/en/PrdDept.aspx/pid-1003167199/code-c/version-all/section-videos/did-106/) today from YA.

I've just read the synopsis and it's just occurred to me that this sounds EXACTLY like Ditto. (read the lower synopsis on the YA site)

Anyone confirm this - as I won't have time to watch it for a while.

Yeah, Sky of Love is a HK version of Ditto. I read a review ages ago which talked about this.

I recently received it too. I haven't seen Ditto so I'm not too bothered. And I like Gigi as well.

Personally I found Ditto to be mediocre and a real effort to sit through.

I notice that the MBC series Roof Top Room Cat (http://global.yesasia.com/en/PrdDept.aspx/pid-1003202235/pname-Rooftop-Room-Cat/section-videos/code-k/) is now available on DVD with ENGLISH subs!

Now, I've always pondered getting one of these Korean TV dramas but always been put off by the lack of English subs. My Missus has a couple on VCD :gag: which we got from HK last year - but they have Chinese subs which I can't read.

Anyone actually seen this or The Hotelier (http://global.yesasia.com/en/PrdDept.aspx/pid-1003038925/code-k/section-videos/)?

The prices aren't too bad condisering they are either 8 or 10 DVDs in a set.

You should be able to get tv series dubbed in cantonese in HK, the couple I have aren't too bad. Don't think I would be able to watch a series with subs, just too long.

Watched The Univited KR release last night...I don't think it's cut, certainly the scene that Ono mentions in his review is in there.

my order came today too. impressed. was shattered after work, and saw the Delivery Note. luckily my local PO station place is open till 7pm, so i made the decision to go get my package.

was a great decision. one thing i noticed tho, is i don't have a lil envelope in my ...ing boxset like the pictures, they came in selophane. also not sure if you're supposed to put the pictures in the back of that little binder thing and both dvds in the front part or one dvd in each part and put the pictures on your wall or what. yes, i need instructions :D

Silly me. :help:

Thanks, Richard. :)

(EDIT: Only $1 difference between the L.E. and the regular release? Think I'll wait to see if there's a HK release of this sometime in the future.)

So anyone know what the difference is between the LE and the regular? Surely it's not that one's just a digipack. (Then again:suspect: )

Watched Crazy First Love HK R3 last night flicking between the english subtitles, korean, and cantonese track. The cantonese dub 'felt' more gramatically correct compared to the subs (not that I will ever know unless I learn korean) but the voices were so bad I couldn't watch it with the dubbing for more than 10 seconds at a time (to compare the odd sentence). Made me wonder how (in)accurate the subs are and how much they can change a scene, or maybe the chinese dub was poo?

Anyone famous do the dubbing a la Miriam for the HK SAssy Girl?

Reversal of Fortune (Korean R3)

This is one which has had a relatively low profile over here despite featuring (one of) the forum's fave birds - the super sexy Ha Ji Won. I picked it up on the strength of a few decent net reviews and also because of my affinity to this type of light-heart romantic comedy.

Anyway, the film is your basic role reversal story about a former child golfing protegy who grows up to become a down on his luck share trader with a good heart inside. Crash bang whizz! and he wakes up to find himself in an alternate life where he had stayed with golf and become the world number one. Just think along the lines of the Nic Cage vehicle Family Man and you have the premise for this.

Hardly a taxing plot and done many times before but this is nevertheless an enjoyable film. Funny in places, warm in others, and of course soppy as hell in the end. ;)

The big bonus is seeing Ha Ji Won on screen so much. What a stunner! Her body must be one of the best amongst the recent crop of K-birds and she shows it off quite a bit here (in a non-nude fashion :( ).

The other actors are all very good - especially the lead actor Kim Seung-woo (Breakout, Yesterday). The disc is nicely presented with 2 themes for the menus and is packed with lots of decent extras - trailer, NG cuts, maeking of ... etc. Picture, sound and subtitles are also top notch.

Ono gives this 7 out 10 - inoffensive and likeable film. This one I can see myself watching again!

Ha Ji Won sexily rubbing bloke's back. She then gets all wet you know?! ;)

Ono's Babewatch&copy - Ha Ji Won is currently at Number 3 in Ono's Top 5 Korean Babes&reg and this film reinforces her lofty position. :D
