Last night I heard the song California Dreaming by the Mamas and the Papas and it triggered a memory deep at the back of my mind of a film or TV programme where this is sung by a few of the characters and it's really funny.

For some reason Freddie Got Fingered and High Fideleity keep on springing to mine but I'm fairly sure that's wrong!

That's all I've got to go on, not much I know, but if anyone can put me out of my misery I'll be very grateful.

the cast of Congo sing it as they're packing / unpacking their rafts by the side of a river

How funny this is depends on how unconvincing you think the monkey is. :)

There was a sketch on The Sketch Show where a group of backing singers kept repeating the first line...

The song called California Dreaming is in an asian film called Chunking Express, could you be thinking of that? There is a girl singing along to it in a few scenes if I remember correctly.

Could it be Due South? The episode where Benton and Ray are trapped in the woods. They sing it raise their spirits, but can't remember the words, and just sing the first bit over again, I think.

Chungking Express is absolutely full of 'California Dreaming' and even if this is not the film that you are thinking of then go and see it anyway. It really is that good :)
