I love sega but sadly in europe the says figures for a lot of there games sell very poorly, but hopefully this is about to change as they are now the publishers of sports interactive's Football manager (basically the new championship manager).

http://www.eurogamer.net/article.php?article_id=54543

And I see those logo designing competitions are always popular on here, and there is also a competition to design the logo, be cool if someone from this board won that.

Have y'all seen the mock-up screenshots of the game?

Here (http://www.sega-europe.com/screenshots/01.html)

Player photographs! Though that's apparently unconfirmed for the final game. All looks pretty cool though.

Updated user interface

Football Manager’s user interface will look markedly different to anything that has come before. Navigation between screens will be easier, with each screen explaining what information is on offer and how to get to other, related information. Consistency between separate game elements will also be more noticeable than in previous football management games: operations such as player filtering and sorting will now work consistently throughout the game. The game’s look – which now includes a two-panel option – will also be easily customised, allowing managers to store their preferred views and to return quickly to them.

Refined game engine

Sports Interactive’s long-standing and award-winning game engine has been refined and tuned in accordance with the feedback received from fans of its previous games. For example, Football Manager 2005 incorporates more than 30 extra fields for player data, including the all-new new ‘preferred moves’.

Updated database and competition rules

As has always been the case with Sports Interactive’s management simulations, Football Manager 2005’s database and competition simulation will be as up-to-date and accurate as is humanly possible.

Pre- and post-match information

Managers will be presented with enhanced information before and after each match, to show team line-ups, injuries and tactics before the match, and lots of stats about the match afterwards.

International player news

Managers will receive information on international performances, allowing them follow their players’ careers and ascertain how they are performing at the highest level.

Cup summary news

Events which unfold in each round of all of the major cup competitions will be delivered to the manager in a news summary.

2D clips from agents

Managers are likely to receive ‘video clips’ (executed using the game’s acclaimed 2D match engine) of a player’s performances, sent to them by that player’s agent with view to a possible transfer.

Coach reports on squads

In addition to commenting on individual players, coaches will now offer their opinions on the squad as a whole, thus helping managers to decide which areas of their team need improvement.

Job centre for non-playing positions

Non-playing jobs will be advertised through an in-game ‘Job Centre’, improving the manager’s ability to hire coaches and other staff.

Mutual contract termination

Managers will be able to offer surplus players an opportunity to agree mutual contract termination, which will reduce the cost of releasing players and trimming squads.

Enhanced player loan options

Managers can now approach other clubs to offer young players on loan, a process which will make it easier to give younger players competitive experience. Also, when players’ loan periods expire, the manager will have an opportunity to extend the loan (where appropriate).

Manager ‘mind games’

Managers can click on any other manager’s name and issue a comment to the media relating to that person. The effects of these comments will see an increase in the amount of pressure surrounding title races, relegation battles, Cup ties and so on. It will also be possible to use this feature in relation to your own players, other clubs, media pundits etc.

Further Features

• Playable leagues in 43 countries.
• More than 140 playable senior divisions and in excess of 100 playable cup competitions.
• Reserve and junior league competitions.
• More than 235,000 players and staff (from 145 different countries) with players boasting more than 120 separate attributes and non-playing staff boasting 40.
• A database of more than 14,000 clubs, 3,000 of which can be managed.
• Data supplied by a network of more than 2,500 researchers from around the world.
• Updated 2D ‘top-down’ match engine.
• Improved ‘radio commentary’.
• Increased interaction with the media.
• Reworked injury system.
• Improved scouting system.
• Improved finance module to reflect the changing face of football.
• Comments when negotiating with human managers (network multi-player game only).
• Inclusion of U18 Caps.
• More realistic awards system.

Sounds promising

Huh? This is from the makers of Championship Manager, they've just taken the source code and databases to a new publisher (Sega) and given it a new name (since Eidos retain the name "Championship Manager")

They're not copying anyone, this is Championship Manager, literally in all but name.

It'll be interesting to see how many this sells. We'll see whether "Championship Manager" has become like a brand to Joe Public a la FIFA.

Well if the new Championship Manager is being made by a completetly new studio then i think people will realise the difference. If not when they play it but by reviews and word of mouth.

Im sure that a lot of people who have bought Championship Manager in the past will at some point find out that it has a new name.

It all sounds promising so far, i just hope they can release a version thats bug free this time around.

And it might be wise to change the thread title as well :)

bear in mind that these are artist mockups (as stated on the first screenshot) - hopefully it will carry through, but when there is a producer around, there are changes to be made :)

I wonder how much they paid someone to come up with a 22 year old name:p Anyone keep getting this image of Kevin Toms Football Manager for the ZX81, Spectrum & C64 in the early 80's?

I don't envy the new studio set up by Edios to do a new Championship Manager game from scratch in less than a year!

Boy are they going to be sick to death of pizza by the end of the year.

I would not think a football management game would sell well in America.

Yea I was thinking that has Champ last year I even saw some adverts on TV for championship manager but I am not sure if they were produced by Virgin Megastores as thats what the advert was promoting.

Are PC gamers more savy when it comes to games, like you say it will be intresting.

Eidos have one hell of a job on anyone who is anyone who as played CM from cm3 upwards will no doubt be boycotting "Championship Manager" for years to come :)

Yea there is a page here about it http://web.sigames.com/competitions.php?type=view&id=2

The competition will run in 2 stages. The first stage will be for you to send in your logo suggestions. These must be in electronic format, and can be sent either via email to logo@sigames.com or by post to

Logo Competition,
Sports Interactive,
313-314 Upper St.
London. N1 2XQ

There is a strict closing date of Thursday 8th April 2004. No entries will be accepted after this date.

A committee of judges from Sports Interactive, Sega, ESPN Soccernet, GamesRadar.com and the official Football Manager magazine will then sit down and whittle the entries down to 10 finalists.

Those 10 finalists will then be displayed on the websites, and it will be down to you to vote for which one you want to win. This will be done in stages, with logo’s being voted out until there is just one left.

So the vote sounds like the popstars voting procedure.

And the brief is
To enter, please read the following first to ensure that your design fits the brief -

Football Manager will be the most realistic football management game ever and the identity needs to clearly reflect this. The logo for Football Manager must be confident, contemporary and stylish - whilst enforcing the grass roots personality of our game....realism, authenticity and depth are key to us and the games that we make.

Our logo needs to work as the name "Football Manager" but must also work on another level as an insignia / badge (with the initials ‘FM’). Finally, consideration should be given to how logo can be developed for new Football Manager titles via adaptation of design, colour-ways, typography etc.

This competition is open to everyone and anyone apart from the actual judges themselves. That means that entries can come from anyone, including professional design agencies, but all logos will be judged on their merit alone. You never know, as well as the prize, this might be a way for you to get noticed by the whole of the design world!

Why haven't Sports Interactive stayed with Eidos? I know the cpontract ended, but why didn't they carry on together? Whose decision was it to part company?

Basicly i believe Sports Interactive wanted to branch out and take the 'Manager' series global with North American versions as well as Hockey and possibly NFL versions.

Edios just wanted yearly updates for Europe and didn't want to risk launching it in the U.S. (The Yanks didn't grow up on Kevin Tom's games so don't really get management games.) So they parted company. Sega steped in and there's now going to be an Ice Hockey manager game released in the states...

Ray Haughton has just mentioned on Talksport that Championship Manager has changed its name to Football Manager.

And it would be nice if the thread title was modified so it made more sense :)

CM3 upwards? What about CM2, I think I must have played that more than any other, I think the first one I played was the original Championship Manager which didn't even have real names for the players!!

Anyone remember European Soccer League?
That was a great game. Came out a while before Football Manager IIRC. FM was the biz tho.

DUH DUH DUH DIIII - Goal!!

After a while you knew if you'd scored or not by the layout of the players as they appeared on the screen ;)

Just a heads up to say the sigames have drawn up the ten choices for the logo competition, for the game.

At www.sigames.com

I don't want to be hyper critical but the majority of the nominations in my opinion are quite poor, or look like something some other logo like the SPL.

At the end of the day the logo isn't the most important thing but hopefully the first choice will win, or I am quite drawn to the the 7th one as it reminds be of the football italia logo I think.

Anyway the sooner this is out the better :)

They're all a bit crap, aren't they? I do think the first one is alright in a kind retro-way, and the fourth one isn't too bad. Number eight just looks like it's come from that BBC Bitesize website though!

If I had to choose, I'd say number one.
