View Full Version : [Xbox] Links 2004 : DVDF Career Challenge *A Fresh Start !?*
There are constantly Links 2004 Forums Tournaments on the go (latest ones being "Legs Wide Open" and "The WooHoo Cup" ) and so it is probably time we started a full career challenge :)
My idea is that we hold a 4 Round tournament on each of the Links courses.
<s>Top 10 places are awarded a "virtual" cash prize (to be decided)</s> (ALL places win cash) and the person with the most cash when we have played all the courses is the winner.
Cash could also be allocated to certain stats leaders (also to be decided)
Now some Forum players are way better than others (*cough* slip :p ) and so a handicap system needs to be used to even it out and to keep the interest going for players who are not quite as good.
<s>Best I can come up with is that for every 10 skill points you have,you are deducted 1 shot from your total for each round.
Any other ideas MUCH appreciated.</s>(new handicap system sorted)
I will keep a scoreboard of all tournaments and prizes in this first post as we go along (prolly an Excel table)
Please post here if you want in or not (don't worry,I will make sure there is long enough between each tournament to give you all time to keep complete them)
Now while we all go all play the current tourneys on the go,please use here to fine tune how we can get this going :thumbs:

For the course settings, do either 3 or 4 rounds dependant on the options of the settings, say the first round, clear,calm, front tees and easy pins, second round,cloudy, breezy,middle tees and medium pins, 3rd round back tees foggy, windy and difficult pins and say for the last round we each pick a favourite course and say the one who is currently trailing out of the people who picked that round, can then pick the settings for the 4th round but it muct be championship tees. :searchme:
Not sure now that the "deduct 1 shot for every 10 skill points" handicap system is viable ! I have played people with more stat points than me and easily beat them,yet also played others with less than me and been whupped :confused:
We need some sort of handicapping or the players who keep finishing bottom will soon get fed up and not bother playing their rounds :(

What about having a mini season over a few courses with no handicap , then have the handicap based on the results of the mini season :searchme:
Or, say the winner of the first tourney gets a handicap of say 15 shots, the runner up 14 and so on, down to the bottom few, who go off scratch :thinking:

Or you could do the handicap between each person, so say i have 74 skill points, Wolfie has 64 and say Gas Uk has only 32, we can divide the gap on points, so say do it by 4 for now, so i would go off scratch, Wolfie would have 2-3 shots on me and Gas would have say 12 shots on me? Then thats the way it stays thro the season?
Not to forget say if somene else has 78 skill points, then i get a shot on them :nuts:

We use the last competition (Legs Wide Open) as the template, the handicap is as such, both myself and Wolfie are off scratch and the others who took part in that competition, then we calculate the handicap as being 75% of the difference between Wolfie and myself and the others?
So
Me - Scratch
Wolfie - Scratch
Mr Speed - 75% of 13 is near enough a handicap of +9
Semps - 75% of 13 is near enough a handicap of +9
Gas Uk - 75% of 18 is near enough a handicap of +13
The other players who are down to take part, can maybe do a private 4 round tourney set up to the same settings as the Legs one was then we can work out the hamdicap, or we can do another tourney without cuts with everyone in as say a warm up and then work out everyones handicap from the total for everyones 4 rounds?
But i think the way to go is 75% of the difference, then it gives the lower players more chance the better they get and keeps the ones at the top on the top of their game. :thumbs:

Good ideas Slip. I think, like Slip said, set up a four round qualifing tournament for everyone and at the end work out everybodys handicap. Just like real golf where you need to hand in three scorecards to get a handicap. The only problem I can see is that people are going to get better during the one or two months of competitions so how do we make sure it stays fair, review everyones handicap after every comp?.
Also would anyone have POOR rounds ;) to benefit from the handicap system . HOPE NOT :thumbs:

We could have a round or two just to sort out the handicaps but as rawowl pointed out,people coiuld play poorly just to get a good handicap :eek: :nono:
slip and fcwolves are deffo the 2 best players here,just a matter of sorting out the rest of us ;) :confused:
A good idea from GAS in that everyones handicap should be reviewed after the end of each Tournament.

Nice one, sometimes a bugger to arrange matches, this way I can play as and when suits :D
I prefer to play as and when it suits too :D (except for the ocassional evening online session with the Links regulars ;) )
This way,people can play their games whenever they like without having to arrange with others.Plus I will make sure there is plenty of time in each tourney for everyone to complete.

Some good ideas from wolfie,have a read and LMK what you think....
START A COMPETITION TO ESTABLISH HANDICAPS
3 rounds anywhere you fancy, set on difficult, average the 3 rounds e.g.
-12, -5, -9 = -26total, divide this by 3 = 8.something round it to nearest
whole number = -8.
take best player e.g. SLIP ave. -20. he goes off scratch(no shots)
WOLF GUEVARA -15 i recieve 5 shots
MRSPEED -10 you recieve 10 shots
etc etc
then start the "season/career"
each comp becomes your handicap tool, after the 4 rounds you work out the
alloted shots for next tournament.
xsn trophys would mean nothing, only final results after our handicap system
count towards the season trophy.
so for example
tourny 1 @ st andrews after handicaps taken off final results are
MRSPEED -25
WOLF GUEVARA -24
SLIP-15
RAWOWL -10
MRSPEED 20 points
WOLF G 19 points
SLIP 18 points etc etc
points would go on how many people start the season, if 20 then 20 points
winner down to 1 for last or not played. that way if someone decided that
they would play crap in first tournament to get handicap up they lose points
for coming last.
the season would be a 4 round tournament strokeplay no cuts at each of the
links courses except the new one unless we all have that course. points
would be totalled up at the end of the season. we could also have a
matchplay FA CUP at the end as a free for all, no handicaps, no points
awarded just the glory of the FA CUP. maybe even a TOP 8 WORLD CUP to decide
champion of our world.

What wolfie has said is good and id say yes to it all, apart from working the handicap out, like in the example if i get -20 and wolfie gets -15 then he gets a handicap of 5, which means if we play the same in the next tourney, all he has to do is the same to draw level, instead of having to improve to beat the leader say me :p on -20, where as say we do 75% of the difference, then everyone hs to improve on their last score to get higher up the leaderboard, so i suggest we do it this way
me average round of -20 = scratch
Wolfie average round of -15 = 75% of 5 which is a handicap of 3.75, so we round it upto 4
Mr Speed average round of -10 = 75% of 10 which is a handicap of 7.5, rounded upto 8
I just see it as fairer to the leader cos after the first tourneyhe/she will have their lead wiped out by giving the rest the equal score including their handicap, its a lot harder to improve of -20 than it is on -15 or -10, if you see what i mean, so this way everyone has a goal to improve.

mrspeed are you in agreement over the handicaps, it is difficult and maybe we should just try it to see how it goes, then if any probs/arguments(when slip loses) we know for next time.

The first tournament will be played with everyone playing off scratch.Handicaps will be worked out from the end of the first tourney onwards.There are 17 of us in this,so 17 points will be allocated to the winner and 1 point for last (and non-finishers) There is no point playing badly in the first tourney to get a decent handicap for the 2nd one,as you will only score a couple of points.
(and everyone needs every available point they can get to try and beat slip :D )
Handicaps will be worked out like this example :
First tourney slip finishes with -20 (scores 17 points)
Wolfie in 2nd place -15 (scores 16 points)
rawowl in 3rd place -12 (scores 15 points)
To get everyones handicap we calculate 75% of the difference between the winner and the others (always rounding up or down to the nearest whole) :
slip - plays off scratch
wolfie - 75% of 5 gets a handicap of 4
rawowl - 75% of 8 gets a handicap of 6
Handicaps are redone after the end of each tourney.
Matches will be 4 Rounds stroke play with no cuts and enough time will be given for everyone to complete.
BUT........
PLEASE complete each tourney at least 24 hours before it is due to finish,this gives me time to write down everyones scores etc and get a table made up ready for putting up here.

Yep - still up for this. Although my Links wants an update for Live and I can't get the pigging thing to d/l :( It won't let me connect until I do it. I tried the GR-IT ones and they completed fine so a bit more investigation required :confused:

Is the OM Director's Cut included? I d/l'd it yesterday - they must be the largest Live updates out. Had a quick round and it's hard. Every tee shot seems to end in front of trees in the line to the pin. I'm then using lofted clubs to get enough height to get over. Did get my 1st chip in though :thumbs: Score was pretty meaningless as a I used mulligans to get an idea of the best routes to some of the holes. I did manage a couple of birdies and a few pars without though.
I have just extended the start date to Tuesday so it gives enough time for everyone to join (remember that you CAN NOT join after the start date !)

Just done the first three rounds before I got hacked off with my lack of skill :) I'm sure the game lies sometimes when it comes to distances, some shots should land on the green but shoot way past, even when going into the wind :(
Oh yeah, and mistaking feet for yards wasn't a good idea on one hole ;)

You need to register your gamer tag with xsnsports.com and then use the competition name and password provided earlier to join via the website. You then get the course codes you require for you xbox from the competition pages on xsn.
Um, has it started? I can't find the competition on xsnsports.

Well im home from work early, so i will go and set the pace by playing all rounds now before i have an evening of Rainbow :dork: :D
Well the 4 rounds have been completed, with a score of -52, dropped shots cost me :oh-hum: worst thing tho i got a bit peeved thro the last 2 rounds, so that contibuted to my scoring.
The good news is, this is one of the 2 courses i dont like, so only one more to go :D
Well :( below average performance again :oh-hum: the course was tougher than I expected . -10 and better is very good on rounds 2 and 4.
Just finished my first round. Had a bad spell on the 3rd round but managed to pull it back on the last.
Ah crap I got the dates wrong!!! 4/1/2004 is 1st April 2004, I'm not back from Uni then. Oh well that's a loss for me then :(

Must say my putting leaves a lot to be desired :oh-hum: My approach play sets me up for some good scores but time & time again I miss straight forward putts.
Only way to solve this problem is to make the holes bigger :thinking: or to practice my little ass off :D

My putting seems to be gradually improving. I had to pull off some long recovery putts to keep my par for my round. I think I should have been around 3 shots better off last night overall. No doubt it will get worse soon :thumbs:

Curse my friend! It's his fault I tell you, now not only has he got more money than me through borrowing the game and "forgetting" to give it back every day fro three weeks, he has now lost me the first round of a competition I was really looking forward to.
Well he is giving me the game back this evening, Links 2004 case around the back of the head I think...

Afraid you will just score 1 point for an "inc" in this one and will play off scratch in round 2 (where you can finally get a handicap worked out)

Do you know when the next start date is? I'm in New York this Friday until next Wednesday so don't want to miss out on registering.

I know everything has been sorted out but to make it more like a virtual career, instead of doing the standings on points you could do it in money terms £1000 for bottom placed up to £17,000 first placed. Same system just written differently.
aliman : Round 1 finishes on Tuesday (but hopefully everyone will be done by Monday as requested ;) ) It will take me a day or two to get all the standings etc worked out and an excel file posted.Then round 2 will prolly start the Monday after,giving everyone about 4 days or so to join.
GAS : No probs with that.Cash it is :D

and i hope you keep the courses unknown until setup, ie slip doesnt have a bad round just to get his handicap up for greywolf:thumbs:
played all four and could have done better i think but got frustrated trying to keep up with slips scores, about right i think, doll has improved so im not 2nd best anymore:cry:
Just played my 3rd round and will be happy to finish in top 5 atm.
Probably had the best round I have ever played and got -17 on round 2. I then got cocky and decided to play round 3 on the crest of the wave but I came back to earth with a bang and only managed -3.
4th round of -7 leaves me/GAS/wolfie all tied for 3rd place with -39 :nuts:
I hit the flag 3 times with my approach shots on the final round but kept 2 putting :brickwall

Damn this game, I get Tourette's Syndrome every time I play it!! I'm sure it cheats sometimes, like when I'm hitting to the green which is 116y away, choose my sand wedge with a range of 115y, and the wind blowing slightly towards me - I don't even hit it full power and it goes sailing over the green into the bunker!
In any case, I was surprised to see that the rounds I played on Sunday were counted as normal, even though the tourney hadn't started by then! I could've been up there with the 39'ers but had a terrible 4th round... So annoying at times, just like real golf!! ;) :brickwall :cry:
I think that sometimes too M@rtin, especially with the lob wedge I have trouble judging shots with that club.
I had those problems (as my last round +2) will testify). I find it hard to judge them from the rouigh as well or at least to know what effect it has on any club. The other big problem I have is going into the red power zone. If I'm driving it seems very easy to "top" the ball and it goes low, short and in the crap. Last night it ended in gorse on a par 4 resulting in a double bogey as I tried to recover. Why it does it I have no idea as I can hit umpteen shots that are fine (generally in practice) and then have one of those which completely blows a hole when it matters. But like you say I guess it's golf. Not sure I can see myself approaching some of the low scores posted for sometime yet though.

I think the reason for this is when you swing the club, you have to do it in one smooth full motion. BUT if you stop at the top of the red zone for a fraction too long you will lose the power that you built up in your swing.
Also when your shots are going futher or shorter than you think they should, the 2 things you need to take into consideration is the wind and for me more importantly the height from where the shot is being taken to the pin. There is a little arrow pointing up or down to indicate this. You then need to adjust how hard you need to hit the ball accordingly.

REECIE, if your hitting out of normal rough the ball mostly goes further, this is due to grass being in between the ball and the club face so you "lose" control of it. in thicker rough the grass grabs the club and can go left and shorter. moral is stay on the fairway:thumbs: i agree with some clubs not doing what they should, my worst is the lob wedge, often 93 yards becomes 120 with no wind behind:cry: i reckon it could be something to do with being on a downhill lie. this isnt really visible at the stance is it? same as the ball being slightly above or below your feet, above aim right, below aim left.
longwinded but from a "real" golf point of view maybe important considerations:wave:
Listening to the commentators can be helpful. They usually make comments like telling you the hole is above the ball or how deep the rough is.

It would've been better but got a bogey on the 2nd round due to my controller playing up - anyone else have a problem where the swing meter won't go past 100% into the orange bit? Sometimes it happens and no matter if I pull back straight or slightly to one side, it still won't go back all the way. Rotating the stick a few times in both directions seems to get rid of it, but I must remember to do it after pausing the game, as that bogey was the result of a 0y swing while I was doing the rotating thing :brickwall

I think the reason that sometimes the power won't go into the orange bit is because you need to do your swing in one complete action. If you start your swing then for whatever reason move the stick forwards without striking the ball it won't let you go over the orange bit until you have let go of the stick completely and strated your swing again.
No it's not that - I know it does it when you don't complete your backswing, but this just happens during a normal swing. I'll be pulling back on the stick as usual but the meter fills slower than normal and only reaches the 100% line, no matter how long I hold the stick.

I was going to play last night but I fancied Splinter Cell instead, I'll see what I can do about that -13 tonight.
Won't have much time the rest of the week so done all 4 tonight. My putting is certainly improving. My 1st round was ruined by a 12 !! on the par 5 15th. The friggin game went wrong :( I chipped over the green with the (much longer than it should be lob wedge) and it bounced out of bounds on the other side. It played a hazard and then left me back on the tee (or at least a tee) with an 8 iron to do 450 odd yrds. I was then bemusedly trying to work out where the actual hole was when I noticed the slow play timer counting down. So I just hit the shot in the direction it initially indicated. So I thought I was ok(ish). Wrong the timer was still counting down :confused: I then had to hit every soddin shot as quickly as I could including all the putts. The timer only stopped when the ball went in the hole and it awarded me another 2 shot penalty for extra slow play. Bit of a disappointment all round as I was doing not bad and it spoilt any chance I may of had of getting higher up the leader board. Plus I was a bit racked off for the rest of the rounds. Hope it doesn't happen again :cry:

I got a -14 last night for my final round, it could have been a bit higher as I got an eagle on one round, then wiped it out with a bogey the next. :(

Um, was playing the second round last night and on the 17th it died and took me back to the lobby, so I started again and finished with a -15 and it told me there is a problem with posting my score.

well the ones up there were done on the same as round one, all taken from a winning score of -71.
we could do it on the combined scores as we go along, so for the two rounds i finished on -122, Rawowl finished on -109, giving me scratch and Raw a handicap of 9 or 10, but the only bad thing with that is, im always getting handicaps against me as the others get better, so if we go by each round at a time, then its fairer or, we could work the handicap out on both scales and go for the middle number, so instead of me having a handicap of 1 against Raw or him having a handicap of 9 or 10 agaisnt me, he would have a handicap of 5 and i would still be off scratch, if you see what i mean, but that would mean more work and be more complicated :D

Working out the handicaps is going to be a nightmare whatever you do somebody will loose out. I will have a think but I dont envy you having to decide how to do it.
