View Full Version : R2 Master and Commander on 12th April
We have the official details here (http://www.dvdtimes.co.uk/content.php?contentid=6698) for the UK Region 2 DVD release of Oscar contender <b>Master and Commander: The Far Side of the World</b>.
There is no director's commentary as suspected but we do nearly get a full DVD9 for the 132minute film with DTS audio (there is one bonus feature on the 1st disc in the form of the <i>I Robot</i> preview).

Would have liked a commentary but the other extras look good anyway.
When's the R* due?
Where * = 1,3,4
R1 is 20th April, not sure about the others.

R1 been announced then? Same extras i presume, but obviously cheaper. Will be getting this one.
if it's anything like recent big R1 releases it will probably be lacking a DTS track.
I'll be going for the R2
Didnt get to see this at the cinema, have heard good things about it and so am looking forward to getting the dvd, shame about the lack of commentary as i'm just getting back into listening to them, but the DTS sounds good, so will be going with R2 assuming R1 doesnt have it
The R1 hasn't been officially announced yet, but should be arriving on 20th April in separate Widescreen and Full Screen editions. All other details are TBA.

Interesting comments from one of the R1 DVD authors David Prior, on the lack of a commentary, over on the HTF:
"Alas, there is no commentary, but it wasn't for lack of trying, believe me. Peter Weir did give it careful consideration and I floated a couple of options by him, but in the end he just didn't want it on the disc. However, I did shoot a lengthy on-camera piece with him in which he directly addresses the viewer and talks about all the things you'd want to hear in a commentary. It's not scene specific, of course, but it's full of witty and wise anecdotes about the process of making the film. I shaped it into a segment called "In the Wake of O'Brian," and it is, in my humble opinion, really damn good. I hope that fills the commentary gap for most of you."

I really resented this film, because I ended up absolutely loving it when in fact I wanted to hate it due to Russell Crowe being in it. I know that's a pretty shallow way to go into a film but I seriously dislike the guy. In any event, the film was so good that I don't think I'd mind going to see another one of his films again, IT CHANGED ME LIFE!!!!!!!!!111
As a person Russell Crowe doesn't do himself any favours, he comes across as being a bit of an arse. I for one can't wait to see Master and Commander because for me he is one of the best actors around at the moment, The Insider or A Beautiful Mind for instance, you just can't fault his acting abilities.
I have to say that I think Russell Crowe is fantastic in the film. I'm not a fan but I was impressed. Actually, the whole movie was one of my favourites of last year and encouraged me to start reading the books, which I am thoroughly enjoying.

The Region 2 artwork has changed, if the images I was sent yesterday are correct.
You can see the new version here. (http://www.zetaminor.com/whatsnew.htm)

Just a quick heads up, the R1 2-disc version (the one with the stunning artwork) is currently only $24.98 CAD at DVDSoon (around £10!), a 58% reduction.

Menu screens for disc one are now online at Zeta Minor (http://www.zetaminor.com/news_archive/menu_pages/master_commander_menus.htm)
The disc definitely has a DTS track, incidentally.
Anybody know if either the R1 or the R2 will be full bitrate DTS?

The Region 2 is 754kbps.
No-one does full-rate DTS any more.

Does anyone know whether the single-disk edition has dts?
Also, the title should be changed as it's down for release in Amazon on 5th April. :dork:

The Danish single disc has DTS so I take the UK will as well.
