what films do people find underated and overated, i found magnolia v.overated when i hired it out on vid, i couldn't understand why it got so much good reviews, it was soooooo boring, i said to myself don't turn it off, it might get better something exciting might happen , but it never. I think Gattaca is a underated film, it should of got more attention when released, i thought it was best film of 97' much better than titanic, but i would say gattaca is a film ahead of its time, and people would realise this in THE next 10 yrs as will A.I

Any of the Kevin Smith films should be making loads at the box office but we instead get garbage like the 2 rush hour flicks. Jackie Chan I like but why would anyone ever go and pay to see Chris Tucker

and yes jay and silent bob strike back is one of the best films of the year.

I thought Malrats was the weakest link in the whole Kevin Smith world. It certainly was the most critically panned. But then again, He's hardly the critics darling is he?

Over-rated:- The Way of the Gun.
It's one of those critically acclaimed films that has a whiff of "Emperors new clothes" about it. The bold step of having no sympathetic characters whatsoever is certainly commendable, but it also means that you're going to have to fill the "emotional gap" with an unusually gripping story and/or great performances. Neither of these are present IMO though and I found the middle third of the movie completely interminable.
(I don't know who Benico Del Toro is paying, but he'd better keep coughing up the cash or he'll soon be exposed for the sub-par performer he really is!.)
Under-rated:- The Thirteenth Floor.
Hear me out at least!...
This hit the shelves without so much as a whimper (from a promotional point-of-view) and yet it's a comparitively intense, well-plotted, well-paced sci-fi movie. It's not the most expensive production ever (some of the effects are just disco lasers!), but it's SO rare for a film to grip me in the way this release seemed to and most of the criticisms I've heard are either untrue or unfair.
(There's a fantastic excuse that can be offered for one of the most common complaints, but unfortunately it involves major plot spoilers).

Hudson Hawk? One of the most panned films in cinematic history, which made critics everywhere unite in their hatred for it? Yep, it is one of the most overrated films ever.
Overrated:
Human Traffic - Good god I've seen more mature kids programmes than this
Kids - Shocking does not mean good
The Ring - Clever horror?? Japanese B-movie more like.
Underrated: (a lot harder methinks)
Hard Eight - Not great, but damn good for a debut
Back to the Future - No matter how much it is adored, it will still be underrated :D
Kikujiro - THE feel-good film :)

MI:2 was definitely overated. However, O Brother Where Art Thou is a glorious film which, in my opinon, did not receive as much critical praise as it deserved.
Davester, did the film not do anything at all for you, not even the excellent soundtrack?
Overrated - The Limey, Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon
Underrated - Strange Days, Event Horizon
Underrated...

It did have its moments but it was too self indulgent. the C bros seem to be v.popular for making pretty average movies. The soundtrack was okay and Clooney was as good as ever, but it lacked a spark.
Jacob's Ladder is a very underated film that I absolutely love.
Overrated - Reservoir Dogs
Traffic
Alien
Underrated - The Bone Collector
Top Secret!
8mm
Can't say i have seen any overated films but as for underated...
LifeForce
Batman & Robin
Batman Forever
The last 2 are IMHO before i get flamed!:p

Might get angry replys on this 1, but in my opinion i have to say all of the star wars series are overated, i didn't really get into them when i was a kid, i prefered films like the terminator and back to the future which i still love now, but when i see star wars fans i can't see how they love it especially when most of them are adults, i see star wars as a kids film, most of the characters in the movie are poor especially the alien creatures which look so fake, the only characters which i really thought were cool were the storm troopers and that bobber fett guy, now if the film had more violence, more beliveable characters and better story lines than i might of liked the film more.
Another underated film , return to oz
now i saw this film before wizard of oz, i loved it, as a kid i thought it was very scary movie especially those roller skater guys

Trainspotting in another film that's massively overrated, whereas Drugstore Cowboy, on the other hand, is very underrated.

HOw canyoupossibly rate hard eight above Ring??!!??
It's very nice in it's way, but ring is just fantastic. The end of that film made me lose about two stone, all of it brown. And the second one's even better.

'Star Wars' is over-rated, in opinion, in that the 'Indiana Jones' and 'Back To The Future' trilogies are far better.
Another reason why it can peceived as over-rated is that it has a legion of fans who absolutely love the movies, and speak to any of them and they aren't going to do anything other than sing its praises.
Overrated:
Jackie Brown
MI 2
Planet of the Apes
Underaated:

Over = Forrest Gump, Philadelphia, Private Ryan, Fight Club, T2
Under = Se7en, The Killing, Terminator, Hard Boiled
These are all in relative terms - for example, Terminator in relation to T2 etc.
