View Full Version : Recommend films like the Evil Dead trilogy

I've just listened to my first commentary ever, even though I own over 550 of them, never turned one of them on.
It was a truly nice one to "break me in", the amusing and informative Bruce Campbell track on Evil Dead I :D
Anyway, I have a few more commentaries to listen to on the sequels and maybe Raimi's on the original, but still longing for some other classic horror films like The Evil Dead.
Now, I'm not really interested in some psycho killer with a knife or a hatchet or a chainsaw, but really something very similar to Evil Dead, ie some peeps in the woods getting attacked by the walking dead. I'm sure there are a few other films like that, most likely worse but still worth a look?
I'm a sci-fi fanatic so I wouldn't know where to begin, but I know there are some experts in this genre that could recommend me some?

i trust you've seen From Dusk Till Dawn?
although not set in a forest lodge, the second half of the movie is a lot like the Evil Dead gore - entertaining - and it should be because the sfx are done by the same people on the Evil Dead series!
Checkout the collector's double disc edition - features a great commentary track form Rodriguez and Tarantino.

Cannibal Ferox
Ring
Night Of The Living Dead
Blair Witch - (maybe not)
Cannibal Holocaust
Dario Argento's stuff - a little bit different but you might like it.
Mario Bava's stuff - another Italien

And you must also watch 'Braindead' at least once in your lifetime (some of the goriest last 30 minutes ever commited to film) :)

Thanks for the recommendations, but I'd better go puke than watch the above, especially Holocaust... you gotta be kidding me.
And you like Aliens, shame on you :o
And those italians are freakin' sick!

Yes it's awesome! That's just the kind I like from the genre.
That SE is very loaded, I got the whole trilogy boxset, your sig pic is of the older movie only edition btw.
Anyway, I guess there is nothing like the Evil Dead, might just stick to them and thats it.
Everything else seems to be just sickening and serious and not fun like the Evil Dead.

Actually I can't stand any of the films or directors I've mentioned but I thought I'd mention them just in case you were interested!
Well, I do like 'The Blair Witch Project' but the others are a no no!
I think the Italien directors are pretty good at their cinematography but they wouldn't know a good script if it came up and bit them in the @rse! :D
The Cannibal films are both sick and I would never want to watch them again!
And, just for the record - ALIENS ROCKS!!! :p
Bad Taste & Brain Dead :)

yep, it's the cover of the barebones R1 disc. The vapire pic of salma hayek for the R1 special edition is also pretty cool. I prefer R1 cover (in my sig) to yellow/orange sun dial one found on the R2 disc (yuk - R2 always gets a raw deal)...
glad to hear your also a dusk dawn fan.. what's the third movie like? i heard hangmans daughter was a rival to the first movie.. i reckon the second one is a bit @@@@ though...

The new 'Mini' advert has got zombies in it, it's only about a minute long, but I found it more entertaining than The Evil Dead. Someone would tape it for you I'm sure. :)

Stuff that's EvilDead-like, as opposed to just good horror...
The Boneyard.
Brain Dead.
Night of the Creeps.
Waxworks and Waxworks II.
D.

and the best thing is the BBFC passed it uncut. :D
guess they must've been drunk at the time.
i would add:
dawn of the dead
day of the dead
zombie (lucio fulci)

The chuckle and gore genre is a strange one indeed.
If you like your horror with emphasis on humour then my recommendations would be as follows.
House I and II (although II is mostly pants it's saved by a fantastic cameo by John Ratzenberger (sp?) )
The Blob (the remake)
Dawn of The Dead
From Dusk 'til Dawn
Critters
Fright Night
Lake Placid
Arachnaphobia
Some of the above are terribly dated and 80`s in feel but I still like 'em in all their cheesiness. :)

Is Braindead getting a DVD release then? (There is no mention of it on Anchor Bays 2002 line up)
I have the uncut VHS, but would absolutely love a DVD SE.

They had no problem passing it uncut because the gore is over the top comic book stlyle. If the weopan of choice was a machette and not a lawnmower I wouldn't of fancied its chances of an uncut release:)

Thanks DCH, martinb and Ron Hill, those are exactly what I had in mind, cheesy and with humour.
I got that House I LE with a House II disc inside already also!

If you like Evil Dead then you gotta check out both Braindead & Bad Taste, The Story of Ricky wouldnt go a miss either.

yet the american release was cut for an R rating. Guess that says something about american sense of humour.
*ducks from any americans in the forum*
