View Full Version : Best footballer in the world now?

Mr Silly

Just wondering who everyone rates as the best footballer in the world now. A couple of years ago, I expect Rivaldo would've figured quite high, but now...

Figo, Henry, Zidane

Who's your choice?

Francesco Totti the way he almost singlehandedly inspires Roma is almost Maradonaesque. Henry is similar but not quite as influential.

We'll agree to disagree, I thought he played very well at Euro 2000 and is just coming into his prime now. We'll se how he play at Euro 2004, but I put down his performances at Korea/Japan 2002 down to negative tactics by the manager.

I still can't understand what went wrong in the world cup for France, their campaign was basically over before it even started.

Besides that was 2002 and Henry aka God improves season after season. :p

Gallic arrogance. "We just have to turn up to win, hard work is beneath us."

You see it occasionally at Arsenal in a different form whereby they absolutely refuse to score scrappy goals. A goal has to be spectacular or a work of football art, otherwise they boot the ball into row Z.

To spot players who suffer from this look for those who seem to have a bad smell under their nose and look disinterested. :D

Snap, although it pains me to say it.

I still don't think Ronaldo is far off being the best even if he is a fat boy.

Zidane is quality (no prizes for that observation), not sure how many years are left in him though.

Beckham?    Great when playing at home for Real but very poor away form for them.

As an out & out goal scorer, Ruuuuuuuuud Van Nistlerooy has to be the best? :)

:notworthyHenry:notworthy, not only is the man a fantastic striker of the ball (see 82 mins in to Man City game for proof) but name another striker with as many assists or can tackle like a seasoned centre back.

He woz robbed for World Player of the Year, but ZZ is getting old now while Thierry is still only 26 and his time will come.

I agree with what people said about Totti, but he's not the all round player Thierry is. And Figo has gone sour since he left Barca, he's not even doing it on the domestic stage anymore let alone at European or International level.

Luiz Nazario de Lima Ronaldo.

If he hadn't have gotten that knee injury i think he'd come up in a few conversations about the greatest player of all time.

Zidane, Nedved and Henry would also be on the shortlist for greatest player at the moment.

Ronaldo pretty much singlehandedly won the world cup for brazil.

I mean, he had roque junior AND gilberto silva playing on his team, as well as the silliest haircut in football since chris waddle's mullet. How much more of a handicap could he have been given.

Henry wins cos of his all round game. Corners, freekicks, control, skill, pace, great goals, assists, commitment, loyalty, defending, fair play, vision, fitness, disclpine. Even his heading isn't as bad as some people say.

Players like Ronaldo and Ruud are great goalscorers, but the question was about the best footballer, so Henry by miles.

Zi-Zu and Buffon are the greatest players currently playing the game.

just out of interest what big games would you say he's performed in?

The Inter one stands out and I seem to remember a season where he did Man U, but as far as I can remember he's never scored in a final...

Which is quite remarkable as Arsenal seem to be in one every year.

I can't recall any goals against major international teams either. Don't get me wrong, Henry is probably one of the best at the moment, but I'd even say Van Nistelrooy and Owen perfrom better on the bigger stage.

Not better footballers, but perhaps they have that knack of just being in the right place at the right time. Henry isn't a really a poacher, so perhaps suffers as a result.

Henry's scored 25 goals in 56 games for France, I wouldn't say that's not performing on the bigger stage.

Well he "won" very blatant penalty in the 2001 FA cup final, and in 2003 as well. So that's two finals he's had a hand in (if you'll excuse the double pun)

I have to conceed that he never does it in big games or at important moments either, especially at international level. Say when one-nil down and heading out of a Euro 2000 Semi final to Portugal.

Baggio would of been the best about 4 years ago but he's a bit past it now.Roy Keane is well up the list for me.But i just cant see past Zidane. That guy has won it all and is still playing for the best team in the world every week.

Someone agree's with my sentiment about Henry not being a big game player. I posted something to that effect ages ago with facts to back that up and was slated at the time. But dont misunderstand me, the man has phenomenal talent, but to be considered the worlds best you have to be head and shoulders above everyone else and be able to perform at the highest level when it matters most. Henry doesnt do that often.

IMHO it's Zidane easily.

Every 10 years or so there is a player that is head and shoulders above everyone. Pele was that in the 50's and 60's. Maradona in the 80's and Zidane has been that since the late 90's. He's won everything at club level and was the most important player in a world cup and european cup winning international side.

Well as a United supporter, it pains me to say that Henry is a different class to most of the other strikers...his game is different to Ruud's, and he is the better all round player.
Although, I wouldn't say he is the best player at Arsenal...
Viera gets that award from me. He is the one player I would love to see leave Arsenal to sign for United...he truly is world class. He can pass, tackle, shoot...got aerial ability...he really is the finished article.
