Disgraceful Crowd Behavior at White Stripes gig.

Tonight, at Glasgow's SECC, embarassing and childish scenes spoiled an otherwise fantastic show from the White Stripes, and fellow US rockers Blanche.

Meg was pelted with at least 6 beers during the gig, and a flying pint cup missed Jack's head by a matter of inches as the band came on. Trying to make light of the incident, Jack commented "you weren't trying to hit me with that, were you? We're all friends here?" As the night progressed, it became embarrassingly apparent that a small number of the audience were intent on ruining it for everyone else in attendance.

Beers, shirts and abuse were thrown at the pair, who endured it tremedously well, showing remarkable good humour, but during their encore, Jack White was struck in the face with a shoe, thrown by a member of the crowd. The lead singer was knocked backwards by the force of the impact, but held his composure and fired straight into the next track, before returning to "I just don't know what to do with myself" to finish the night. The crowd were clearly delighted with his decision to stay on, and the pair were met with rapturous applause following the end of the track. The offending fan was jeered loudly, while security apparently attempted to identify the attacker.

Once again, Scottish deliquents have given genuine fans a bad name, and it will be hard to repair the damage this pitiful group of morons has done.

Jings, that is awful behaviour. I hope they find the bandit. Well done to The White Stripes for carrying on considering the hot headed actions of some of the crowd.

Same thing happened at an Oasis gig I went to at the same venue quite a few years back. A couple of glass bottles were thrown at bonehead so they stormed offstage and didn't come back on. The crowd near enough rioted shortly after. :oh-hum:

In all fairness to Oasis etc. if someone threw glass bottles at me, I think I'd be off and wouldn't be coming back either.
Still nice to see White Stripes carry on and choose to ignore the incident, rather then upset their genuine fans.

These delinquents who try and spoil things for everybody else really make my blood boil! :nono:

Surely if you paid to see a band and some arsehole did this (next to you), you'd kick off? I know for a fact I would.

Surely they would just need to look for the person leaving with one shoe on?

Sad news, I'm seeing them on Tuesday in Blackpool

If someone near me threw something at them, i'd have no trouble identifying the culprit to the authorities

It's this sort of behaviour that's putting me off going to gigs now. What happened to going along and enjoying the music?

Okay, I know it's always happened (bottles of urine being thrown at Donnington, etc.), but at a White Stripes gig???? It's hardly aggressive music is it!

Totally disgraceful behaviour, just hope it doesn't jepordise any future UK tours.

There was the odd plastic bottle of water thrown onstage at the Wednesday night Ally Pally gig. Thankfully that was about all.
Superb performance by the Stripes........unlike the very strange Blanche.

As much as I hate to admit this, I think Wembley Arena has got it right by not allowing people in the Standing Area to bring drinks into the arena........But the sound still sucks there!!!

Morrissey got hit on the head with a bottle at Preston Guildhall, in 1986 I think, and went off to hospital - that was during the first song (Queen is Dead?). So hardly a recently occurrence. Gigs are usually violent places, odd huh.

Indeed, I remember a few Terrorvision gigs where you'd need an umbrella for all the empty bottles and stuff being chucked.

Can't help but think of the Office crimbo specila when the bottle hits Brent in his face.

Shame, just stop them touring Scotland in the future :D

Fact: once a band achieves a certain level of success, they're likely to attract people who don't make up the 'normal' student-y audience. There were a lot of "Neds" at the Glasgow show. We were stood next to 6-7 of them for much of the show and - to give them their due - they knew more of the words than I did. They had a good time.

The original post reads like something from the Sunday Post. I've been to loads of gigs over the past 20 years where stuff has been thrown at the stage. We will never know whether the intention was to hit Jack in the coupon. I think at lot of the time it's meant to be some kind of bizarre interaction with the band - to provoke a comment or something. In my younger days, I threw a banana at Voice of the Beehive simply because I'd half-inched it from the venue catering.

Downhillbiker: ever been to the Barras? Then you'll know about Glasgow audiences and their interaction with visiting beat combos!

Ok... the guy that threw the shoe is still a complete EDIThead. I've been to many gigs, and whether they meant to hit him in the face or not, it was still pathetic. No performer deserves to be smacked in the chops with a trainer, even if it was in good humour, admiration or whatever.

The Stripes would have been perfectly entitled to leave the stage, but they played on, which was great. It suffered from the one of the worst crowds I have ever seen at any concert - I don't care if the neds you mention were really good fans, I'm talking as a whole. There were ned girls there who were being complete EDITS to everyone else there, and a few skinheads close to me in celtic strips who had no interest in anything that was happening on stage, they were just interested in fighting with each other in the crowd. Why do people pay to come to a concert they plainly don't give a damn about?!

Even if some people that are branded as neds are lovely people, the majority and how they act give them their deserved reputation. A concert without them is a good thing, and the gig last night would have been better off had they not been there.

I was at the Liverpool show and Blanche were approximately 8,000,000 times better than the White Stripes.

Can't believe this. Why bother going to a gig to cause this kind of edit. What's the point?

Big shame and I hope the WS don't consider this an image of the UK overall. I'm sure they're many trouble-free gigs on this tour give them a better impression - Ally Pally certainly rocked!

Great advert for Scotland!

Question has to be asked where the hell were security, try this at a football match and the police would be on you in minutes and you'd probably end up with a lengthy ban from the ground.

Well, yes, and I have been to gigs where this sort of thing might happen to the support act, but what have the White Stripes ever done to anyone?

audiences to be the "best in the world"

Yeah,

Someone on another forum alledgedly spoke to him after, and he said that it wasn't a big deal, he thought the scottish crowds were fantastic.

So it's not all doom and gloom, so it would seem

Tomorrow he'll probably say that nobody rocks like Blackpole ;)

Maybe it's not really a big deal to him, they haven't always been huge.

Not so long ago they were playing small venues, supporting and stuff where stuff like this is fairly common.

I was there on Sunday and the security seemed much more alert. A crowd that size always has a number of people willing to spoil it. Thing about Glasgow is people go to gigs just for the night out no matter who's on so they care less about seeing them. I travelled 60 miles to the gig and if some edit beside me chucked beer I kick his head in. Happens in every big city/gig though.

Blanche were very good. White Stripes kicked butt! And they were tres heavy!

My sister took a Broons book for Jack White and threw it to him. Didn't reach him though!:( Security guy number 1 told her it was illegal and security guard number 2 took the book to Jack White. Good man. Wonder what he made of it!!:searchme:

Please read the T&Cs (http://www.thedvdforums.com/) regarding swearing.

You can say that again!

I was two people deep from the front and I couldn't breathe! I was floating as people crushed me - nearly broke my leg and arm on one occasion, so I thought "I can't be doing with this at all, I'll go to the much quieter wings". Then I went and bought a Coke.

A big thanks to slippery seal for providing me with my ticket (I'm unemployed you see). Cheers!

Ooh, a relatively new smilie - :searchme:

Who's going to Travis at Empress Ballroom, Blackpool on March 6? Best starting a new thread probably.

Oh, just found this on the NME site regarding the Blackpool gig:

BLACKPOOL ROCKS!

THE WHITE STRIPES’ tour notched up two more triumphant shows in BLACKPOOL this week (January 27-28).

Despite converting the town’s famous ballroom to a primal rock venue, countless red-and-white clad couples ballroom danced hand-in-hand to ‘Apple Blossom’ and ‘In the Cold, Cold Night’.

While Tuesday’s show was light on conversation, Jack had the word ‘Noxious’ written on his arm. He instead let some of their greatest hits do the talking - only pausing to ask where "the Blackpool lights" were, meaning the illuminations.

After some confused banter with the front of the crowd he gave up, saying "I guess it's just a case of 'right place, wrong time'".

And after being hit in the face by a shoe in Glasgow, another unwanted item of footwear just missed its target, while Jack almost smashed Meg in the face with a microphone stand.

Tuesday’s setlist was:

’When I Hear My Name’
’Black Math’
’Dead Leaves and the Dirty Ground’
’I Think I Smell A Rat’
’Take A Whiff On Me’
’Cannon’
’Astro’
’Jack The Ripper’
’Jolene’
’In The Cold, Cold Night’
’Hotel Yorba’
’Offend In Every Way’
’I'm Finding It Harder To Be A Gentleman’
’Why Can’t You Be Nicer To Me?’
’Death Letter’
’Grinnin’ In Your Face’
’Seven Nation Army’
’I Want To Be The Boy To Warm Your Mother's Heart’
’Wasting My Time’
’You’re Pretty Good Looking (For A Girl)’
’Apple Blossom’
’Ball And Biscuit’
’Let’s Shake Hands’
’Look Over Me Closely’
’The Hardest Button To Button’
’I Just Don’t Know What To Do With Myself’

Oh, and this:

WHITE STRIPES TO PLAY READING AND LEEDS FESTIVALS

THE WHITE STRIPES announced last night (January 30) that they will be playing at this year’s CARLING WEEKEND: READING AND LEEDS festivals.

After a blistering NME Awards show at London’s Brixton Academy, Jack White thanked the crowd, saying that he would see them at this year’s festival - due to take place between August 27-29.

Earlier the duo tore through another highly-charged set, treating fans to adrenaline-fuelled versions of ‘Black Math’, ‘Hello Operator’, ’Seven Nation Army’ and ‘You’re Pretty Good Looking (For A Girl)’.

As previously reported on NME.COM, The White Stripes were forced to pull out of last year’s Reading and Leeds festivals when Jack suffered a fracture in his left hand following a car accident (July 9).

After the incident, the guitarist issued a statement which read: “The White Stripes would like to apologise most sincerely to the admirers of the band who have faithfully purchased tickets to see us perform in the midst of this, a most unfortunate accident.

"A bone in the index finger of my fretting hand was shattered in an automobile accident, making it absolutely impossible to play guitar, especially since I've been instructed by doctors that there is no way I can move my wrist until it is completely healed.

”Our shows from the ninth of July 2003 until the middle of September must all unfortunately be cancelled. This includes the festivals in the British Isles, T in The Park, Witnness, Reading, and Leeds. The real shame is that it is virtually impossible to make it up to those admirers who purchased tickets to those festivals with the sole intention of experiencing The White Stripes live performance. We apologize to those people and hope that the other fine performers in the line ups will fulfil a lost space for you.”

Black Rebel Motorcycle Club filled in the headlining slot, performing a crowd-pleasing tribute to the Stripes with their version of ‘The Hardest Button To Button’.

Following the cancellation, festival organisers Mean Fiddler promised that the pair would return this year to headline.

Last night’s NME Awards show setlist was:

‘Black Math’
‘Dead Leaves And The Dirty Ground’
‘When I Hear My Name’
‘Jolene’
‘I’m Finding It Harder To Be A Gentleman’
‘I Think I Smell A Rat’
‘In The Cold, Cold Night’
‘Hotel Yorba’
‘Truth Doesn’t Make A Noise’
‘Look Me Over Closely’
‘Let’s Shake Hands’
‘Small Faces’
‘Death Letter’
‘This Protector’
‘We’re Going To Be Friends’
‘Offend In Every Way’
‘The Hardest Button To Button’
‘Ball And Biscuit’
‘You’re Pretty Good Looking (For A Girl)’
‘Hello Operator’
‘I Just Don’t Know What To Do With Myself’
‘Seven Nation Army’
‘Boll Weevil’
