As views have been fairly split over which of the Alien films people like best, I thought it would be interesting to have a vote.

I'll post totals in this opening 'post' seven days from now.

Basically, I think it's best if you place the four films in order of preference. First place scores four points down to last place which scores one.

I'll start:

1) Aliens
2) Alien
3) Alien 3
4) Alien 4

Those who don't list Alien 3/4 means each film gets 1 point.

that's all that matters really. I'd like to say Alien was number 1, but I can honestly say I enjoyed Aliens more, and also mainly cos Alien scared the bejesus out of me when I was younger and I won't go near it now!!

They started amazing and got worse, but I never got upset with the quality of any of them. Even Alien: Res is pretty great.

1. Alien (my favourite, love the style, cinematography, mood)
2. Aliens (an action film with a lot of heart, intense acting from Signourney)
3. Alien 3 (lagging behind is A3.. ok movie but hated it when i first saw it, but it has wonderful, poignant finale which was fitting to the series)
4. Alien Res. (another dissappointment which flies in the face of the original triliogy- more MTV than the rest of the previous movies).

my votes are pretty much the same order as the movies were released.. means i'm not expecting anything fantastic for Alien 5, due to my view that the saga has long since deteriorated in terms of quality.

Without giving away exact scores, the Alien/Aliens race to see which one is The DVD Times fave film of the series is extremely close.

After 'Alien:Ressurection' scored highly early on leaving Alien 3 lagging behind; now it has dropped way back and Alien 3 is a comfortable third.

1. Aliens- Slightly spoilt by the pretencious Marine macho spouting, but the films set pieces make this one my favourite.

2. Alien 3- Excellent film overall, can't understand its unpopularity?
Very dark and moody, the scene where Ripley is at the funeral of Newt being intercut with the birth of the alien is brilliant.

3. Alien- I was only just born when this came out and I should imagine it shook the world, its a very good film. But, looking back on the film in post Aliens years it can be a little slow and draggy.

4. Alien Ressurection- Crap.

Gotta say that all the films have some great cinematography though, really gives them atmosphere. Its only some disrespectful directing that has dragged the series down.

ALIEN (Very close second)

The two above are two different types of movies albeit in the same universe with same creatures & main character. ALIEN, after all is a sci-fi suspense, shock & Horror movie and ALIENS is an all out roller coaster balls to the wall action fest. But I love 'em both to bits.

ALien3/Alien Res Tied in 3rd place coz both movies seemed to show some great potential then dissapointed me by ****in the respective stories up the wall towards the end of each.

I actually prefered the alien costumes done by Stan Winston for ALIENS than any of the CGI of the latter two films.

Once you've seen the original theatrical version (and liked/loved it), the added 17 minutes in the directors cut adds so much to the story and makes it, IMHO, a better film.

1) Aliens Directors Cut. I just can't imagine this film without the prologue, the explanation behind Ripleys bonding with Newt and the Sentries and the inexorable feeling of retreat.
2) Alien. Scary as hell when I first saw it. Blew me away. Only just edged out by Aliens as i'm a hardware freak and liked all the toys in Aliens. I'd call Alien the "classic" but I just enjoy Aliens DC so much more.
3) Aliens. Good action flick some bits made me go eh? Directors cut resolved those bits.
3) Pitch Black! Ok, it's not in the saga but it ****** all over 3 and 4 and gleefully breaks wind in their general direction. I don't rate 3 or 4 at all and i'm not about to start. I'm with the "lets pretend they didn't happen" brigade. :)

Worth remembering that the only reason cuts were made to Aliens was so that an extra showing could take place every day in each movie theater. ('twas before the widespread introduction of soulless multiplexes!)

Good point especially when you think of the 'Alien' disc as a '2 disc' set with the 70 min documenatary.

What really needs a good special edition DVD is Aliens - the other two probably wouldn't have a large enough appeal to merit buying them again. (Maybe Alien 3)
