Review

All for the Winner was the film that made Stephen Chow's name in Hong Kong. It's a pretty good film too. Well worth 100 minutes of your time.

'Mei Ah' have finally realised that quality is more important than price with this release. Unfortunately one or two short scenes are missing from this version. Apparently it doesn't affect the Hong Kong VCD of the film.

The picture is presented at an aspect ratio of 1.78:1 with anamorphic enhancement. The video looks much better than earlier releases from this distributor although the frequent appearance of spots and scratches on the print is occasionally distracting.

The English subtitles on this DVD are generally free of errors although one or two grammatical errors pop up occasionally.

As I do not have a sound system I cannot offer a proper review of them. They sound OK to me though.

This disc is pretty much extras-free. A trailer for the main feature and Magic Crystal are included but they are both non-anamorphic and have not been cleaned up. The disc also includes a synopsis and pictures of the cast and cew.

Overall:

If you don't mind the (minor) cuts then this DVD is otherwise OK technically.

EDIT - I've just re-edited the review to insert the information about this DVD being cut. As I hadn't seen the film before (on any other format) I couldn't have been aware of those cuts.

Boink!

Thanks for the mini review, this is one Stephen Chow film I don't own, yet.

Boink!

I didn't have the time (or the will) to create a fully fledged review... :D

I guess it's worth pointing out that it helps if you've seen God of Gamblers before you see this film. There are so many references to that film that it'd be like watching Scary Movie without having seen Scream.

Yep it's missing a couple of scenes (http://pub127.ezboard.com/fhongkongdvdsgeneral.showMessageRange?topicID=6293.topic&start=21&stop=40) - one at the end :(

Glad I got my VCD

Watched this tonight.

Very average IMHO. Not really funny despite knowing most of the references to GoG.

Just a little heads up also that Mei Ah are planning on reissuing this UNCUT.

I have to give it to this company previously known as worst popular HK DVD company. Ever. Even if they are run by a bunch a triads; allegedly :suspect:

Just one problem - am I supposed to buy this again? After spending eight quid on an average film I am loathe to spend the same amount again when they bloody should have gotten it right in the first place.

Yes of course those who bought the first issue have got stiffed. However had you been in HK then you can take it into them and swap it; but you're not and I doubt they'll offer a postal exchange service, especially overseas, so it's tough unfortunately :(

However for a HK company to sort problems like this out (and the new improved subs on their second issue Swordsman 2 remaster) is nothing short of a g'damn miracle :D
