Got my Tivo box this morning, from QED (ordered Wednesday afternoon).

7 hours later and it's pretty much all set up (even though the room's a mess with boxes and bit everywhere).

2 questions...

The IR cable you have to attach to your digital box (i have a nokia itv digital) - the set up says you have to do, but the manual says it is optional - do you need to do it, what is the difference???

When I change channels with the tivo I get the tivo banner and the itv digital banner at the top - is this normal??

please help...

I would guess that it is optional but only in the looses sense

The tivo is going to use the IR to set the digibox to the correct channel you asked it to record.

If you don't use it, you'll have to manually set the digibox to the correct channel when you record.

As for the double banners, well thats unfortunate. If they display similar informationt then turn off the one you don't like the look of:) other wise you might have to live with it.

In the menus it gives you option to use the cable IR dongle, or to use the front blaster built in (but doesn't actually explain why you have a choice or what the choice means) - the setup menu allows you to choose which one.

Have now managed to get rid of the itv banners.

oh right,

Well the best would probably be the built in IR because its tidier. But all the IR recivers are designed to accept a signal coming from the front. Well as that is obviously impossible with the boxes on top of each other, the digibox will have to respond to a signal bounced of the rear wall/sofa. But if the IR can't be bounced, sorry reflected:), around the room and still be reconized by the digibox then you will need to use the cable, with the IR at the end pointing toward the IR reciver on the digibox.

Basically try the front blaster, by getting the tivo to change the digibox channel, if it does this repeatedly (ie it does it even if people/dogs/cats/etc are walking around) then use that.

If it fails, even once, I would use the cable dongle thingy!, otherwise you might miss recordings.

thanks for all you help cjb110.

Tivo looks great, but isn't the easiest thing to set up.

you'll have to tell us how good it works out to be.

I'm half thinking of one, but I'll probably wait until the tivo/DVD+RW combo machines come out.

Also it'll be nice if a competitor started over here as well, something like Replay, 'cause from what I heard it had better spec/software.

Do you find that your tivo is noisy?
Mine sounds like it's just about to take off!!:p
