View Full Version : Mon Oncle Criterion...flickering?

Well, my Criterion Mon Oncle arrived today. Watching it this evening, there seems to be a bit of slow flickering in the image, a kind of subtle aurora borealis effect I suppose. This is most noticeable, of course, in scenes with large expanses of solid colour, such as in chapters 16 and 19. The light levels of sections of the image seem to go up and down a little.

It's subtle, but noticeable. Has anyone else noticed this? It seems to be on the black-and-white short film included as an extra on the disc as well, so is it an encoding or NTSC-translation thing? Or just the way the print is after all these years?

I notice flickering on loads of my films! :( Mainly in dark shots. I think its an NTSC thing but I'm hoping its cos my SVHS lead is a cheap one?!
I never noticed it on my old 4:3 tv so it could also be a prob with my WS tv?! :(

Well, I'm using a six-year-old Philips 4:3.

It's more than likely an age thing, I don't know. Anyone else?
