View Full Version : Recommend me a film with large scale battles
There's something about films with big, expansive battles, that I really enjoy!
A few examples of ones that spring to mind (and I have seen);
Saving Private Ryan (first battle)
Last Samurai
Waterloo
Two Towers and Retun of the King
Braveheart
A Bridge to Far
So, can anyone recommend any? I have heard that Sergei Bondarchuk's War and Peace is supposed to have a few impressive large scale battles, but is the film any good?
Also, I have just recently watched The Last Samurai and somebody said that as I enjoyed it I would probably like Akira Kurosawa's Ran. Would anyone recommend it?
Cheers

Definately recommend Ran. Not only awesome battles but the costumes and colours as well.
Ran's battle scenes are very different to those in Last Samurai. Most of the time, you just see large numbers of troops being moblised and sent to different positions.
However...... Ran is still a bloody good film. The middle battle is very good.
Kagemusha is very good as well.
Funnily enough I do have Glory, The Patriot, Zulu and Starship Troopers on DVD.
I think I will definatley check out Ran.

Check out The Longest Day. Bridge At Remagen has some cool scenes too. Not a great movie but if seeing old european towns get blown back to stoneage is your thing then you canīt go wrong with this one.

Waterloo, as mentioned above?
I think Ran & Bridge at Remagen are the only ones I have not seen as yet :D
Gettysburg
We Were Soldiers
Also the Jet Li film 'Hero'.
The Napoleonic film you might be thinking of could be Abel Ganz's Austerlitz. Unfortunately I don't know of any DVD or even VHS.
Alexander Nevsky has an awesome set piece battle on ice and is easy to get on Eureka.
