R3 is cheaper from dddhouse but is it worth paying the extra for the R2 release ?.

I've not seen the R3 but can tell you the R2 features a gorgeous Anamorphic transfer and a fantastic suite of extras (including an excellent 50min documentary that screened on C4 back when they showed Hana-Bi)...haven't actually listened to the soundtrack on my new DD5.1 setup but if its anything like the rest of the disc it should be top stuff....

I am of course working on a review, but I completely failed to meet my promised Shaolin Soccer posting date (still not completed it) so won't give a date for Brother :)

i'd say the R2 is worth it, but i'm guessing the difference is around £5 which is a fair bit....

Tristan H reviewed the R2 on the R2-Project, review here (http://www.r2-dvd.org/article.jsp?sectionId=4&articleId=2395)

The R3 version has a great DTS soundtrack so I hear, it's non anamorphic of course
However, the English subtitles are present all the time - meaning when anyone speaking English speaks, they are still subtitled

I have Brother R2 and it's a stunning DVD.

By the way do you want to buy it from me? watched once and in mint condition - £10.

The DTS track is indeed very good. The subtitles thing is a little annoying though, but for about £8 it ain't bad!

Well I've just watched this (the Cheapie R3) and it ain't bad ... straight forward beat takashi gangster pic but with american actors ... I can see why this isn't too everyone's taste but its a fair translation of Takashi's style without it becoming americanised like so many other first offerings from foriegn directors ...

3 words describes this movie:

Violent
Contemplative and
Gangsters

Forgot to add that the R3 disc is non anamorphic but has a dynamic and powerful DTS soundtrack.

Colours are a little muted and blacks could be blacker but not a bad price for this widescreen DVD-9 disc.

I watched Brother last when I had my naff surround set up but I got the impressions that the 5.1 was very good with some ambient rear effects.

I've always been happy with the R3 but after hearing how good the R2 is i may be tempted, i always get a kick out of the look on my mates faces when the gunfight scenes kick in.

Not really gunfights though are they? ... more like loads of bullets (sound) and direct hits ... lots of direct hits ... basically nothing you haven't seen before in other kitano takeshi movies ... :)
