View Full Version : The Further Americanisation of Bond???
Just spotted this rather interesting article over on Ain't It Cool News... Now, whether we can take this post with any validity I don't know, but seeing how MGM seems determined to milk the Bond franchise for every dollar it's worth I'm guessing this tallies in line with their way of (half-assed) thinking, sigh...
The Americanisation of Bond (http://www.aintitcool.com/display.cgi?id=16792)
Now, if this is true it's certainly heartening, at least, to hear that the Bond producers are putting up a big battle to save and maintain the British/European sensibility of the franchise, which I feel is one of it's most distinctive assets.
However, as immediately abhorent the idea of 'Americanising' of 007 is to me (a British fan) let's not forget that Cubby himself was keen to make the series more appealing to Americans at several points. Indeed, before Sean Connery re-signed for Diamonds Are Forever, Broccoli had signed up the American actor John (Psycho) Gavin for the role of Bond - and that film, itself, was almost entirely set on the American continent (and Live and Let Die, AVTAK had high American content).
Still, an overt 'Americanisation' of Bond is not an avenue I'd like to see ventured (I felt that Tomorrow Never Dies, with slow-mo two handed uzi blasting, was a little too American in style for classic Bond) and I hope MGM come to their senses. Still, with them scuppering the spin-off Jinx movie recently (I actually think it could have been a lot of fun, and I heard that Stephen Frears was signed to direct which is a highly interesting choice of director - and since when do studios reject plans for cash-cow spin-off projects???) MGM clearly don't know what the hell to do with 007. :brickwall

Well the last two films haven't left much of an impression on me to be honest.
If indeed the next Bond film is to be "Americanized" as the link suggests then it would probably make things worse.
But millions of people will still go and see it regardless though won't they?
And i thought Vin Diesel/XXX was supposed to be the "American" Bond though?

The last Bond was 'Americanized' enough, and that was terrible.
Only slightly better than the Dire xXx

The English wouldn't vote for the sort of parliament that you lot voted for (How much is it costing the taxpayers up to press)
Now THAT is stupidity, plus before you accuse others of "stupidity" - you ought to ensure you can spell.
But hey - we digress;)

So far the parliment is only costing £460,000,000.
But give it time, and it will double in price again.
What annoys me is that the Old Strathclyde Council Building was up to the job an didn't cost anything.
And yes some idiots did vote for Thatcher, But we saw to that with the help of a pair of scissors, Duck Tape and a ICBM.
Oh well back to work, must earn a lot of cash, so the tax can pay for that piece of Crock in Edinburgh.

Can we keep this thread on topic? We're not even 10 posts in.
I'm glad to hear the Bond Producers are holding their ground. I cannot believe the suits at MGM. How stupid are they? seriously?

When all's said and done, surely I'm not the only one who thinks the whole Bond thing has been done to death, and should have been "retired" a few years ago.
With lines in recent films (Showing that the producers are aware of the limits of the franchise) on the lines of his boss telling him that he is a cold war throwback, and in the latest (And possibly worst), where he arrived in Hong Kong to find the welcome is not as friendly as when the Brits held sway there - in both the feeling is that the world has moved on from the sort of plots where a Bond character might fit in.
The release of a new Bond movie, where once it might have been rather exciting, now is a huge yawn.
If he was real, he'd be reaching retirement age.

Since Pierce Brosnan took over, each Bond film has grossed more than the last and Die Another Day made a significant jump into the kind of box office that summer event movies make. MGM have precious few other money makers (they've already made sequels to Barbershop and Agent Cody Banks for heaven's sake!) and they're not going to risk their one big franchise by messing with the formula. Expect something very much in the style of Die Another Day.
Whats the fuss about, the whole article is based on " a friend of mine told me....." story, & there has been no officail word from MGM or EON!
Its proberly come from some sort of request by MGM that the next Bond film is set in America (he has not been there since Licence To Kill which was 15 years ago), which a few have been from time to time (Diamonds, Live & let Die etc).
Even if it was true at the end of the day MGM can NOT make a Bond film without EON/DANJA (the company that holds the Bond copyrigth).
If EON is not happy thet just walk away & dont make another one untill MGM gives in.
The big gap between Licence To Kill & Goldeney was down to EON not being happy with the way MGM sold the TV rigths to the Bond movies too cheaply & also offered no controll over when they could be shown on TV (EON do not like Bond films being shown on TV while they are promoting a new one). After a year (1990) MGM reached an agrement with EON that they would not do so again, but EON still made them wait untill the "to cheap, with no control" TV deal run out before they made Goldeneye.
