Normally I do some research before buying a disk in order to avoid some horrors, but this one slipped by me somehow (maybe the low price from DVD Soon!), but it was with horror that I found out that the new R1 Special Edition release of Annie is pan and scan 4:3  And this replacing the previous release which was in OAR cinemascope. How can they do this! It does have a DTS track which is apparently better than the DD 2.0 on the previous release, but according to a review on the Home Theater Forums (http://www.hometheaterforum.com/htforum/showthread.php?s=&threadid=177392) the picture quality is actually worse than the previous release.

Some special edition!

rwoolst - didn't know that; thanks for the info though too late!

So we have:

Old R1 - correct OAR, crap sound
New R1 - P&S horror, great sound, crap PQ
New R2 - PAL speed up

:p

Just as well the R1 "SE" (huh!) only cost £6 from DVD Soon - maybe I'll flog it and get the R2!

Are you sure you weren't just sent the P&S version by mistake?

Exactly. If it came with an option to silence the brat then it might be mildly interesting :D

As people on that HTForum have noted Columbia/MGM have been releasing an increasing number of 4:3 discs. It is indeed a worrying trend especially for those who like less popular films like 'Jury Duty'/'Cops and Robbers'.I can't believe they would adopt the same approach in europe, but it can take a long time to get the same disc released here, sometimes it never appears.
