Jeez, one of my mum’s extended guarantees has a longer shelf life than a Criterion DVD these days. On the other hand it’s a crime they stuck this out with a non-anamorphic transfer so hopefully when it’s re-released it’ll be done in 16x9.

Well, anamorphic alone does not a great transfer make.

It still looks absolutely splendid, and has one of the best and most entertaining commentary tracks you'll ever hear, making the relative lack of other supplements very easy to bear.

Because Criterion refuses to have their special edition content licensed out to anyone (with two notable exceptions, where the filmmakers produced the tracks themselves - Boogie Nights & the upcoming Monty Python and the Holy Grail), you'll almost certainly never see it again.

Presumably Universal want it back to tie in their own release with the new remake.

Funnily enough though, neither Charade nor Dead Ringers features in the Criterionco list of OOPs

Yes, but neither was The 400 Blows for a while! They'll be added soon enough, never you fear.

Mmmm. I thought Charade was one of those odd titles that had slipped into the public domain. Which is why there are so many different versions of it (do a search on amazon.com to see what I mean).

Still, at least it's an excuse to buy another DVD that I've wanted for a while.... (yes dear, it's going out of print you see....)

I'm struggling to keep pace with Criterion at the moment. I ordered Brazil earlier in the week as I have a strange feeling that it might disappear sooner or later. I'm also waiting on Rebecca and Notrious (which has been given a big thumbs up by Robert Harris) and am thinking about The Lady Eve. Now I might need to get Charade as well.....

I'm glad it's not just me that uses that phrase. I'm sure my other half thinks that DVDs have a shelf-life of about 3 days what with the amount of 'OOPs' I have.

If Criterion DVDs didn't go OOP it wouldn't be so much fun collecting them!:)
