You pessimist you! They are apparently going to be released after Episode III has been released, probably with new footage. the next Star Wars DVD will be Episode II :(
Ringos.co.uk are selling the vcds of the trilogy all for £25 which ive heard are very good

Just to confirm what Kryten has said; in a recent interview, George Lucas has stated that DVD releases for the remaing two films will follow a 'standard' pattern, ie: 6 - 12 months following it's cinematic debut (EP II next May).
Having said that, EP I did get a Christmas re-release to theaters at the end of '99. If EP II follows the same pattern it may be that the DVD of will follow sometime in '03.

I've seen the George Lucas's comments about the DVD releases and believe that there is hope...
Remember, we were'nt going to see ANY Star Wars DVDs until after Episode 3 and yet most of us now have our hands on Episode 1.
Next year is the 25th Anniversary of Star Wars original release...I don't believe that they will let that pass without some kind of 'event' release. And we'd probably still all buy a six movie boxset come 2005/6...you just know that ALL of the deleted scenes on Episode 1 will end up integrated into the film at some point, plus the scene where R2D2 falls over the edge of the skyscraper...
George has to put his kids through college you know, it ain't cheap!

indeed, and i too was leaning towards the thought that this event would be the dvd release of episode IV. however, the press who attended the two-day event at skywalker ranch were told on the quiet that episode II would be released on dvd in roughly one year's time, day-and-date with VHS, and there was no mention of episode IV. still, as you say, lucasfilm are certainly prone to misinformation/changing their minds.

i disagree and more than that, i hope not! for example, the reason not all of the deleted podrace lap 2 footage is back in the movie is not so that they can release a future version with the whole lot in there, but rather (as explained in the deleted scenes commentary) because it destroys the pacing and doesn't work as well. regardless of my agreeing with that, it is lucas' opinion and so i can't see it ever getting back in.
'more' rarely seems to equate with 'better', as the special editions proved. just look at some of the other deleted scenes on the DVD. 'farewell to jira'? the old bint hardly seems too pleased that anakin has been freed! 'dawn before the podrace'? more tripe featuring a rare occurance of poor acting from natalie portman. 'extended pod grid sequence'? yet more destruction of the pacing, and (i'm still shocked by this one!) an extension to the scene where that thing breaks wind in jar jar's face!!! unquestionably the absolute nadir of the star wars saga.
that's not to say i don't think some things warrant inclusion. i think the 'air taxi' sequence is very good and solves the problem of the abrupt ending of the previous scene and anakin wandering off without qui-gon. also, i like all the podrace 2nd lap stuff they put back in the movie (except for the breaking of that cable on anakin's pod - a 'clamity' too far, imho). and i assume everyone noticed that the best deleted scenes only appeared in the documentary? how they left out the fantastic extra footage of the jedi duel i'll never know!

Is there a missing scene to explain why Darth Maul gets hacked in half by a direct assault from a junior Jedi when right up to then he'd been more or less invincible? Did Obi yell "Look, the goodyear blimp!" or something else that was edited out.
Darth Maul was ROBBED!
