You all know about the problem with the non-removable icon, right? It's not a bid deal, really, but an icon appears at the top of the screen (like the Matrix's 'White Rabbit'), but the only way to remove it, is to turn off the English subs. The icon isn't too obtrusive, but I thought it was worth mentioning...

Nope, out of all the stuff I've read that's the first thing I've heard about it !

Got my copy today, had to chase the postman for the package after he left me one of those dreaded 'collect from dept' forms.

Yeah, there's been quite a bit about this on the Asian DVD Guide Forums (http://pub5.ezboard.com/bhongkongdvds). Presumably the disk was rushed out before this problem was checked.
As I said before, it really isn't a big problem - the icon's quite small, and shouldn't effect the film.

You are too busy laughing in the football sequences to notice most of the time! They are just so over the top!

if you like hk films, you'll definitely be happy with those, especially at that price. i've got them all myself (from dddhouse as well) and thoroughly enjoyed them.

The Blade (http://blade.hispeed.com/) web site is now reporting that Shaolin Soccer is due for an April 5th theatrical release in the US. Should be interesting to see how it goes down. My initial inkling would be 'lead balloon', but you never know...

anybody had problems with a rough layer change? on my 709 i get 2 fast skips (not like a normal layer change where its more of a single pause) during the bread-making sequence.

also, what is the difference between the normal version and the "special footage" version also on the disk?

samhain
21-10-2001, 00:06
Hi niz,
I have a 709 too, and the layer change is noticeable, but passes with only a slight pause, and without problems. There's a long thread about his in the Asian DVD Forums (http://pub5.ezboard.com/fhongkongdvdsgeneral.showMessage?topicID=1419.topic). I know of a few other people with the same player, who don't have a problem with the layer change, so I suspect there's a faulty batch out there. I'd ask for a replacement.
I don't think there is any difference between the normal and special versions of the film. I assume the idea was you could watch the normal version, and the icon wouldn't appear, but due to a screw up, both versions have the icon, and the only way to remove it is to switch off the subtitles.

The special version is hidden away in the 'white rabbit' feature.
2 extended scenes involving the female lead was originally cut out from the initial HK cinema run.

Due to its success in HK the 2 scenes were re-edited into the movie for another special edition cinema run i.e. lets milk it as much as possible ...

Why the 2 scenes were not edited back into the DVD instead of hidden behind the ' white football feature' I don't know.

1st extended scene appears when the white football appears after the bread making scene.

2nd extended scene appears when the boys celebrate getting into the finals at the cafe were the femal lead works.

are these 2 scenes the only things in the "white rabbits" that are not in the "Special Effects Footage" section?

yes, although there are actually 3 extended scenes, the third being the outtakes with the added bonus of the inclusion of English subs for the goofs IF you watch them as part of the directors cut....

my full review (http://www.dvdtimes.co.uk/index.cgi?page=Review&id=324&story=2272) elaborates on the extra scenes and where they are placed within the film (According to my DVDRom anyway!).

downloaded the film from the net thought it was excellent , although the quality wasn't all that good i could see how it would be much better on dvd, i thought the last match was the best #spoiler#
i might be mistaken but during the last match when the evil player is against the bruce lee keeper, bruce lee is on the floor after been hit by a powerful shot and gets hit again which makes him go through the net, now does the ball follow him in, because at that point i thought it did which made me think that the evil team was winning 1 - 0 , i will probably watch it again later on to find out , but could someone tell me now?

RichB
23-10-2001, 15:19
Nope the ball never actually went past him

Just watched this after waiting a while for the DVD and loved it :D

Seeing as the R2 release of Battle Royale has been given a Jan 21st, 2002 release date, i've decided to wait & see what that's like first. Although it's Tartan, so I'm not expecting much.
I've seen BR & I thought that the 1st 20mins was excellent, & the rest of the film didn't quite live up to that, but was still very enjoyable.
I think you'd get more out of BR if you were aged between 14-16, but then, you wouldn't be old enough to watch it in this country! ;)

I dont think I'll ever watch a football match the same way again.

The next time an England International is on, I'll be expecting David Beckham to fly 20 foot in the air, Micheal Owen to turn the ball into fire with everyshot on goal, & David Seaman to lose all his clothes. :D

Then again its not totally unrealistic, the badly taken pen at the very start of the film was identical to an Andy Cole shot.:D

Am I right in thinking that the special version is useless to English speaking viewsers as all it does is enable the white rabbit feature which is on anyway when English Subs are on ?.

Is it not possible to view the 2 extra scenes seemlessly, without resorting to pressing the enter button ?.

I didn't manage to find seamless branching so tell me if you do.

Whether you watch it with english subs or not surely its still classified as special features? So why is it useless?

No, what I meant was even if you chose to watch the normal version you still end up watching the special version because the white rabbit comes on with english subs.

So to put it another way, you lose the option to watch the film without the extended scenes thingy popping up, so you can only watch the special version.

Is that right ?.

You can't really choose 'Special Version' though - all the menu option does is explain what the symbols are, they're automatically turned on EVEN if you choose Cantonese and NO subs (from the setup menu) as sub track 4 is switched on (and that contains the symbols on their own).

There is no seamless branching version on there that I could find - when you press enter it simply jumps you to another chapter which contains an alternative version of that scene.

Its far from useless cos the additional scenes (especially the first one) are great and its only a minor annoyance when it comes to selecting them.

EDIT - you replied at the same time as me :) basically no, you can't watch the film with English subs without the symbols for the extended version showing up...no big deal really (IMO)

ARRGGHH.

Im not complaining im just asking.
I found the menu option a tad confusing.
I can live with the occasional white rabbit pop up given the price & quality of the film.
I was just trying to make sure I havent missed something.
IE - seemless branching.
