View Full Version : Pulp Fiction
Why have I given this a thumbs down? That's for me only having watched Pulp Fiction for the first time today!
I've never been attracted to QT films before but I always liked the look of the trailers for Kill Bill so saw that as my first QT and LOVED it. So, there I was checking out the high-street sales a couple of days after christmas and came across Pulp Fiction for £7.99 and I think, ok, lots of people rate this so I'll give it a go.....
What a GREAT film!
I loved just about everything about it, the rich dialogue, quirky unique characters, incredible situations and even the disjointed story that all only fell into place at the end.
So, am I also gonna like RD and JB?

Jackie Brown is a lot of peoples least favourite QT movie. After watching it at the cinema I to was disapointed, the film gets better with repeat viewing. I prefer it to RD.
Kill Bill is just awesome, I can't wait for the second part.

Reservoir Dogs? Almost definitely. Fantastic film.
Glad Twistingginger likes Jackie Brown.
I hated it though. I've seen it three times (once at the cinema, once at home and once accidently at the parents) and I honestly still don't like it. Other than a couple of fantastically quotable lines (which would be a total banning offence to say here), I can find nothing to recommend in it.
I thought JB was fantastic. I would recommend it
Love all of 'em for different reasons. Pulp Fiction is probably the best overall and will no doubt stand the test of time better than the others (arguably).
I love Jackie Brown and as it's less 'obvious' than liking the others, I'd probably say it's my favourite of them all. But Reservoir Dogs has to win just for sheer coolness - although that's got a new competitor in Kill Bill!!

RD is a masterpiece imo, probably my favourite QT film.
JB is also very good. i know a few people who dont like it, and indeed, i didnt like it the first time i watched it. having seen it again since, it's definately just as good as the other items on his resumé.
why did it take you so long to watch PF

Although it's a Tony Scott film, check out True Romance as well (if you haven't seen it already that is). Great characters, great dialogue, and great movie. ;) Was that a bit Paul Ross?
You haven't seen Resovoir Dogs? Are you KIDDING me? :blah:
Get a copy ASAP :norty:
As mentioned above, get a copy of True Romance if you haven't seen that. Tarrintino wrote it. It's an amazing film. There is a scene with Christopher Walken and Dennis Hopper which is one of the greatest scenes I've ever seen.
Reservoir Dogs and Pulp Fiction are excellent.
I used to think Jackie Brown was awful until I watched Kill Bill, think its watchable now. :D
Thanks for the tips, I've been a bit disapointed by some of the lightweight stuff I've been watching recently so I'll check out some of these suggestions.
A couple of people asked why I hadn't seen some of these before? They just never appealed to me from the trailers. I watch a wide range of movies, from old musicals to sci-fi blockbusters but I don't tend to go for anything obviously violent and I'd been led to believe QT's stuff was. I was surprised by how little there really was in PF.

Reservoir Dogs is a fantastic movie and is hard to choose between that and Pulp, JB not overly sure on, haven't watched it for a long time so that might change my view on it.
None of Tarrantinos films are that violent (Bloody as hell but not violent) and if they then it's general warranted in the film, but either way I like some slicing and dicing and shooting so it adds to the films :D
Jackie Brown is a marvellous film with great performances especially from Pam Grier and Robert Forster.
Personally my least favourite QT movie is Reservoir Dogs, it's ok but it's not as cool as it thinks it is. IMO Harvey Keitel gave the best performance in the film.

1.Reservoir dogs
2.Kill Bill
3. Pulp fiction
A very long way off in fourth, Jackie Brown.(watched once on video:eek:, I know, will never upgrade to dvd)
I will have to give True romance another go I think, didnt enjoy that much either.
In order -
1. Reservoir dogs 9/10 - Simply electrifying.
2. Jackie Brown 8.5/10 - Greater maturity and range here.
3. Pulp fiction 8/10 - A great movie but the pace seems to be overly slow at times.
4. Kill Bill 6/10 - self-indulgent and , unbelievably, often boring.

well, I think dogs is overrated. Flashes of good dialouge/scenes, but my least favourite of all his films by a long way!
Pulp fiction on the other hand is probably my favourite film of all time. I thought kill bill was excellent and Jackie Brown good.
After Pulp Fiction though, my favourite tarrantino films are the ones he wrote but didn't direct- Dusk till dawn and true romance
RD - great
PF - great
KB - pretty good
TR - not bad
JB - pants

All of QT's films are superb. Jackie Brown is the "grower" of the lot- but once you've watched it a couple of times you just can't help but love it. Kill Bill is most definitely his "least-good" film yet- though as I've only seen half of it I don't really think I should pass judgement yet tbh
Buy them all and enjoy them to bits. Then buy True Romance, From Dusk Till Dawn and Natural Born Killers :D

Thank god someone else sees the light! I hate RD, but I enjoyed Jackie Brown. PF and KB are still my favourites though - even if Kill Bill strikes me a bit too messed up.
Jackie Brown was a bit of a shock after RD and PF. It's by far QT's most acomplished film though. Maturity, restraint, character development, sparky dialogue and very solid direction.
It also offers amazing performances from RF and PG.
I love all his others, don't get me wrong but Jackie Brown if by far my most watched of his movies.
I also cannot stand RD, just have never been able to get in to it.
PF is excellent 9/10
KB V1 Also 9/10
TR One of the best films i've seen without knowing nothing about it.
JB growing on me every time i watch it 7/10
RD 6/10
Pulp Fiction and Reservoir Dogs are far and away QT's best films. IMO Pulp is certainly one of the best films ever made, it's cinematic perfection, a masterpiece, 10 out of 10!
Dogs is without doubt the most quotable film of all time, the dialogue is so stylised, the film itself is excellent and as a debut, astonishingly good. A 9 out of 10.
Kill Bill, all style no substance but I'd give it a 7 out of ten just for being so visually impressive. Pity it doesn't have the heart and soul of PF or RD but then again I don't think he was going for that.
Jackie Brown was bloody awful, forgettable characters, mediocre dialogue and a story about... well an air hostess, big deal. QT did this picture solely to work with Pam Grier. A five out of ten, purely for the fact that it's competently made.

Love them all. JB is superb and while I thought it was very good the first time I watched it, I now think it's an outstanding film.
If we're throwing True Romance into the Tarantino pot, then I think From Dusk Till Dawn also deserves a recommendation. Another corker of a movie
Why isnt From Dusk Till Dawn considered one of Tarentino's movies? Did he not direct or something?

He wrote it and also acted in it but didn't direct.
After last year, Kill Bill is easily my favourite Tarintino with True Romance in second place. I'd put both films in my all time top 5 also.

If you check out True Romance for the 'QT writing, another guy directing' vibe, also watch From Dust Till Dawn. Very much a Rob Rodriguez film, but QT's dialogue and story aesthetics are still very much there.
RD - 5/5
Pulp Fiction - 5/5
Jackie Brown - 4/5
FDTD - 5/5
TR - 4/5
I'd just avoid Natural Born Killers and Four Rooms.

Does anyone here like Natural Born Killers? I gave it a spin but it is virtually unwatchable IMO. :| There just isn't enough to sustain interest for the duration of the film. I didn't like Oliver Stone messing around with the film stock and all that flashy stuff. It just didn't work for the movie, and I found it very grating. Best part were the black fantasy-esque comical scenes with Rodney Dangerfield.
I LOVE NBK! Ok, I understand what Oliver Stone has done, and I've got the original QT screenplay, which reads ok too, but NBK is held high in my memory.
Very cool movie - IMO.
OK, I've watched RD and JB this morning (had to get up early to wait for a visit from a client). Having watched all four that QT has directed now here's my list:
=1 KB
=1 PF
3 RD
4 JB
I can't say I really thought JB was anything special on first viewing. I really didn't find it engaging and I felt it had little in common with the other three. Anyone could have made it.
RD was quite a dramatic piece, almost like a stage play in places which I liked. But I didn't find it memorable and isn't it the one that's supposed to be chock full of quotable dialogue? I can't remember a single line!
So, KB & PF come out as equal first for me. Both movies have lots of re-watch value, terific set pieces and memorable scenes with quirky characters and off-the-wall situations.

I don't know anybody who really liked Jackie Brown on first viewing- it's a film you have to watch more than once to really appreciate. I'll admit that when I rented it out about 5/6 years ago I fell asleep half the way through. I re-bought it on DVD though, and I absolutely loved it- it's so clever, and full of great dialogue. It wouldn't have been the same if QT hadn't directed it- and I think some of the backlash on here is a little unfair. You shouldn't compare it to his other films, you should just take it as it is: a well-written, well-told story.
Okay, if I had to give each of his films a rating (I'll use the Ebert "rating out of 4 including halves" method):
Pulp Fiction = ****
Reservoir Dogs = ***1/2
Jackie Brown = ****
Kill Bill Vol.1 = ***
And as for the films he wrote:
Natural Born Killers = **
True Romance = **1/2
From Dusk Till Dawn = ***1/2

Jackie Brown is QT's best movie imo..
followed closely by
reservoir dogs
then
Pulp fiction
and
Kill Bill
Did Tarentino not have something to do with Killing Zoe??? If he did, thats another one to add to the list!
An exec producer credit methinks. It's directed by his mate, Roger Avary (who's now done the excellent Rules of Attraction).
I did read a QT biography years ago, which goes on about the relationship between the two - I'm no expert but I think they worked in the same video shop together and got on well together. I even think Roger Avary helped develop some of, possibly, Pulp Fiction (don't quote me though - it's all from a hazy memory!!).

I agree with that!
Roger Avery shares script credit on "Pulp Fiction". They fell out shortly afterwards, according to an inside source I know. Apparently, QT got a bit high and mighty and went about dumping on many of his old friends.
My Quentin Tarantino films in order
1. Pulp Fiction. I thought the plot was better than RD by a mile.
2. FDTD - Excellent film and unexpected twist in plot.
3. RD - Good, like the film a lot but not quite as much as no 1 & 2!
----
4. Jackie Brown - Yawnarama. That said I have only watched it the once but it just didn't hold up for to the 3 above, and by a long shot.
?. Kill Bill - Not actually sen it yet!

Reservoir Dogs is almost as good as Pulp Fiction, and Jackie Brown just behind. Will be seeing Kill Bill Vol. 1 tomorrow...

Yeah, gimme a quote from Kill Bill?
Watch Reservoir Dogs again.
"Who didn't throw in?"
"Mr Pink"
"Mr Pink? Why not?"
"He don't tip."
"He don't tip? Whatya mean he don't tip?"
"He don't believe in it."
"Shut up! Whatya mean you don't believe in it?"

Haven't seen Kill Bill yet, but I love the other three. Pulp Fiction's dialogue, structure, referencing, music, its 'coolness'...i love all of it!
I completely agree with the guy who said Dogs is like a play. I love it for similar reasons to PF.
I like Jackie Brown because it's different to the others, but it still has the QT stamp on it. Pam Grier is phenomenal, and the soundtrack is great: it opened me up to a lot of music.
My favourite of all time is True Romance. Then, in order, Pulp Fiction, Natural Born Killers, Resevoir Dogs, Jackie Brown.
Where will Kill Bill go when I finally get to see it - can't wait/
Dogs is fantastic. wonderful dialogue and a great, tight little screenplay that's as hardboiled as they come. I liked NBK as well, and Pulp Fiction.
Hated Kill Bill. :( so far, anyway. It's only half a film FFS and that's what it feels like.
Pulp Fiction is the first film I saw which made me think "wow!"
I was only 12/13 at the time, and saw someone's VHS copy, that opened me up to films in a big way. I hadn't watched it in years, then the DVD came out and i could fully appreciate how good the film really was
I've liked every Tarantino film I've seen. Jackie Brown gets better with each watching.
