Audition...

Panasonic PWD6 (around £2750) or the tv version PA20 (£3000)
Hitachi PMA500E (tv version the PD3000 but not updated yet)
Pioneer 434 (includes tuner etc for £4000).
Fujitsu have a couple of sub £3000 monitors worth a look.

General concensus is that the Philips models are a little heavy on the image processing but they might be ok.
Avoid Samsung, LG, Techwood, Daewoo, Vision etc. The best budget model is probably the Thomson (inc tuner) which has had some good reviews.

IMO, if you're looking for a full tv version, then Panasonics TH-42PA20 simply must be auditioned at £2999 as its between this and the Pioneer 434HDE as to which is the most highly regarded plasma screen on the market (although at £3999, the Pioneer is a damn sight more expensive).

If its screen only you're looking for, then the Panasonic TH-42PWD6 is the finest standard resolution screen around although be sure to auditon Hitachis new ALIS panel, the 42PMA500E at around £2800. The Pioneer is not yet available monitor only (May/June being the latest rumoured date) but don't be tempted by the 433MXE as this panel is far behind the latest models contrast-wise.

A fine round up Sprout, but i would include the Philips 9965 as one that's well worthy of looking at.
