View Full Version : Films where the bad guy / evil wins....

Hi,

I'm a fan of films where evil / bad guy (or evil in general) wins and films where there is no hope etc or where it just doesnt end well. Dont know why, but just feel that it adds to the emotion of a film.

As guidance and an example of films like this that I like;

Seven
Arlington Road
To Live and Die in L.A.

Just looking out for others (probably own more than that, but cant think at the moment) - Any suggestions appreciated

have the spoiler tags broken evilsly?

it's not even like it's an old film we could all be expected to have seen

Don't know how to hide the letters and besides, I think people should expect spoilers in a thread specifically about movies that don't end well.

Brazil is one of my all time favorites and it has a very bleak ending.
But I'm very surprised that you're a fan of films that don't end well and don't even mention the mother of them all, Requiem for a Dream!
Those two get my highest reccomendations.

Dont be suprised! I actually own both Brazil (criterion edition) and Requiem for a Dream (they dont come much more bleak than Requiem!!) Just forgot about them when doing the thread. :)

TBH, I thought that spoiler tags were superfluous in this thread, because it was clear from the subject that the thread would name some films "where the bad guy/evil wins".

Unless you just wanted to look at a screen full of spoiler tags, why did you even open the thread?

Anyway, The Empire Strikes Back is a prime example of a movie where evil triumphs over good. ;)

This might require a spoiler but the rightly admired films of the 1970s nearly all had endings where the bad guy/evil wins.

Zebedee
31-12-2003, 00:11
Yeah wasnt sure myself whether to use spoliers or not. The thread heading does make it failry obvious, but then again people do click in anyway (I have been guilty of that myself!! ;) )

Oh and thanks for the suggestions so far people!

Usual Suspects comes to mind...and yes, I'm presuming that everyone here has seen the film and whoever hasn't deserves to be whipped. So there.

Chinatown - Faye Dunaway is killed, and John Huston gets away with her daughter/sister.

Easy Rider - Dennis Hopper and Peter Fonda are killed. Capitalism wins!!

Bonnie & Clyde - I know they're bank robbers, but they are the main characters and you do root for them!

McCabe and Mrs Miller - McCabe is killed. Mrs Miller is smacked out of her head. Another one of those great 'feel good' endings from the early seventies!

Requiem for a Dream although it is more like bad society wins

In the original Rocky, he's beaten by Apollo Creed

The Player - thanks to a daft witness, Tim Robbins gets away with murder

Basic Instinct - the last shot reveals Sharon Stone manipulated Michael Douglas into killing his innocent girlfriend and he's about to get an ice pick surprise

Under Suspicion (the 1991 Liam Neeson film) - Liam was the killer all along and framed his girfriend Laura San Giacomo for the crime

Imposter - not only is Gary Sinise's red herring wife an alien imposter but so is he and he succeeds in his terrorist mission

Carlito's Way - "Remember me, Benny Blanco from the Bronx?"

Good call on that last one, Ol' Blue Eyes, I'd forgotten about that.

All "Alien" films - I always rooted for the alien;)

Terminator - You know that eventually the machines will nuke the world, no matter how many "from the future" terminators are - well - terminated to supposedly stop it happening (Or is that just the studios making sure there are possibilities for $equel$)

Nicholas and Alexandra - The communists took power at the end.

The Long Good Friday - Suppose the bad guy was defeated by - the bad guy

Thanks for all the suggestions so far - keep up coming! There are certainly a few that I will be checking out :)

Oh and when I said To Live and Die in L.A. it was because Will Petersen dies and his partner becomes what he originaly hated. I know its not a clear cut bad ending, but its not really feel good!

Yeah, but we know that John Connor defeats the machines in the end!

And this is the first time that I've ever used a spoiler tag on here!:D

In the original Rocky, he's beaten by Apollo Creed I saw a repeat of Room 101 the other day, one of Jonathon Ross's choices was the type of movie where the under-dog battles through impossible odds to eventually win the day. I have no problem with his choice, except that he mentioned Rocky as an example.

He really should know better. :nono:

Okay, I know it's not a film but there were 3 or 4 episodes of Captain Scarlet inwhich the Mysterons won. A kids series, yes, but I reckon it's unusual for a children's program to show the bad guys stuffing the heroes.

Errr...what's the point of spoiler tags in this thread? You have to highlight them to see what the films are anyway (there's no way of telling whether you've seen the film otherwise), and it's obvious to anyone with half a brain that the thread is going to do nothing but give away the endings to various films anyway.

In all honesty the use of spoiler tags in this thread has turned it into an unreadable mess, I really don't want to have to highlight every damn post just to see what someone has put, surely in threads like these the only purpose served by spoiler tags is to spoil what could otherwise be an interesting read.

Well, I certainly didnt intend this thread to become a debate about the use of spoiler tags! :) I simply used them in my original post as I just had that feeling that someone would flame me for revealing the tone of the ending to a film they had yet to see :D ......

I did stipulate later on that it did seem a little pointless due to the nature of the thread.............difficult to call though

Anyhow, some good suggestions so far!
