Nope, didn't notice it. I have a Wharfie 750S and I commented towards the end of the film that I hadn't noticed it.

And yes, Gladiator is one of the worst offenders as it appears halfway through a conversation IIRC.

I noticed it on my Sammy 709, it froze for a second or two.

me 3 on an LG.:D

It really sucked !.

More worryingly though, is that during the qui-jon, obi-wan vs darth maul scene, theres a bit where maul uses his jedi mind trick to throw a droid into the wall. On the DVD its almost impossible to see this because it appears to happen off screen. Im sure it was fully on screen at the cinema.

Yep, I noticed this too, JimmyBoy!! Maul sends the object flying into a door console that explodes and opens the door, but it explodes offscreen to the right, before the camera pans to it! Shame, cos that's one of the few really "kewl" bits of the film.

...and it was the first layer change I've noticed in a long time, a long time. I seem to remember Qui-Gon was just about to enter Anakin's home.

:(

The Layer change really sticks out and is quite annoying (Sony 725)Tho got to admit the sound on this disc is one of the best (got my denon 3801 working its ass off) brilliant. :)

The only reason I noticed a layer change on my Sammy 709 was that the amp indicator went from DD to DPL for a fraction of a sec - it was one of the best I had seen!

Didn't notice it at all on my Sony 336.

Will look out for it next time.:D

My a Sony 725 always displays layer change pause. It's only a split second so no big deal.

My Toshiba 2109 is pretty bad, noticable on all films, has a two second pause :(

My R1 copy of Gone in 60 is a pretty bad offender on my Toshiba SD-3109B. strange though, havent noticed it on any other films apart from gladiator, which is absolute poo (great film though :D)

Layer change:
I didn't notice it at all, and my DVD player is one of the worst ever made, so nyer.

Maul force-ing the droid:
This is an odd thing. I've watched the pan-and-scan version of the film quite a few times and I've always thought, "Damn pan-and-scan crap, it crops the frame so that you can't see the thingy smashing into the wall". But now I've seen the OAR version for the first time since the cinema release, I discover it was never in the frame at all!

I noticed this scene was 'missing' to.
I'm sure the WS VHS shows it (as well as the cinma release)??
I will have to find my video player and dig out the film to have a look now!

on the 2 occasions at the cinema when I watched TPM you clearly saw the droid hitting the wall fully on screen.
I could be wrong but im pretty sure it was viewable at the cinema.
OAR my arse.:(

Where exactly is this layer change? I looked for it again last night and couldn't see it where OtNife mentions it. It is unusual for my player to perform a perfectly seamless layer change and as I mentioned above the Gladiator change was very noticeable so I'd be surprised if this one happened completely seamlessly.

I get the layer change problem on my Pioneer 535..

The layer change takes place in chapter 24, 00:30 seconds in. Qui-Gon and Anakin are just about to enter Anakin's home with the money.
With my Wharfedale 750, the freeze seems to vary slightly in length everytime, but is never more than about 1/2 a second.

And I just checked my VHS WS version - the object hitting the wall is indeed offscreen just like the DVD. Oh well.

If u guys are really that worried about how long the layer change takes why not just watch the film on VHS - all i ever seem to read on this forum is layer change comments and moaning.

The layer change is 30 seconds into chapter 24?

Couldn't they have made the change at the end of chapter 23 to make it less noticeable, or am I just completely ignorant about how DVDs are mastered?

This is the problem (or lack of ;)) that I'm having. I have a second-generation Wharfedale 750S and the layer-change is completely unnoticeable, I even went looking for it deliberately last night and couldn't see it and there are some noticeable layer changes on my player, the aforementioned Gladiator being one of them.

I thought the position of the layer change was OK and not too long. As everyone else said, the Gladiator one is terrible for positioning, and it does seem absurd that some mastering houses (the people who did Hollowman for example) can put the layer change in a good place, like on a black cut screen between two scenes, when others put them in the most obvious place.

Usually what gives away a layer change for me is the sound drop-out.

I definitely noticed it on my quite old Panasonic - I can often see layer changes - but this one was very stark. Still - minor quibble...

I noticed it on my Sony 535. It doesn't bother me though. It happens, the film carries on and i've forgotton about it. :)

My house mates (all dvd virgins not really understanding any of it) moan though. I didn't think they'd notice but i spose after me raving about DVD's they think it annoys me when they pick up on it.

I do hate it however when a layer change occurs in a scene where the sound blatently stops and carries on. That is annoying! :(
