At a press conference for The Passion of the Christ, or whatever the movie is called now, a few weeks ago, Gibson apparently stated that it was extremely unlikely that he would now be doing a fourth Mad Max.

He must've just gone off the idea, and I guess big stars can do whatever they want, whether a deal is signed or not (and it must have been or the film wouldn't have been so definitively announced).

A real shame IMO. I guess there's still a small chance, but it doesn't seem likely.

Dragging this from the dead because it looks like part of the Justice league deal is that Miller can make Mad Max 4 again. (Minus Gibson)

So who's the new Max?

I think it should be the dude that's plauing Hitman. He would be ace as mad max.

I'm resurrecting this thread...

There's a multipart interview with George Miller over on a Newsweek blog (linked to via an article on AICN), in which he confirms that MAD MAX FURY ROAD is still on, though a couple of movies down the line. Read here:

Miller confirms FURY ROAD (http://blog.newsweek.com/blogs/levelup/archive/2008/03/12/the-george-miller-interview-part-ii.aspx)

Whats interesting, is he states he's delaying the film to also work on a MAD MAX game, which he hopes can be released in conjunction with FURY ROAD (there are links at the bottom of that article for the first part of interview)

And, from Miller's mouth: definitely NO Mel Gibson back.

MAD MAX FURY ROAD a go-er! yes please!!!

Would love to see another Mad Max movie, as long as they keep the car chases physical rather than CGI'd.

Knowing our luck, the Death Race 2000 remake/Speed Racer movies will flop & this project will be put on hold again.

SIMON ADEBISI

Death race 2000 has Statham in it. For that reason alone i hope it does well.

TonyG

Statham as the new Mad Max would work for me, certainly better than the likes of say .... Nic Cage. *shudder*

Well, if you wanna keep the antipodean theme, a beefed up Eric Bana wouldn't be bad, imho.

Or, now that he's not going to be Snake Plissken, how about a post-300 Gerard Butler?

Or maybe, like with the first Max, Miller will cast an unknown? Then again, the scale of the budget may require a 'name' to open it.

Totally agree that the action should be real, in-camera stunts, rather than CGI, but Miller is one of those directors I trust to do FX correct.

SIMON ADEBISI

Bana is a great suggestion actually. He does intense and violent well.

Must rewatch Chopper sometime soon actually.

Well the live action Mad Max 4 rumors return...
http://www.aintitcool.com/node/42804

Charlize Theron is ready to go beyond Thunderdome. Mel Gibson, not so much.

Multiple sources tell E! News that the Oscar-winning babe is director George Miller's pick to play the lead female role in the upcoming, Mel-less Mad Max 4.

When he announced that he would begin work on the sequel back in 2007, Miller admitted Gibson was too old for the antihero role of "Mad" Max Rockatansky, and said, "I don't think he would be interested in being involved at all."

Instead, Miller is looking at little-known Brit Tom Hardy, whose credits include Black Hawk Down and Band of Brothers, to play opposite Theron.

Tom Hardy! Charles Bronson to be Mad Max!!!1111

Honestly, I'm not writing off Mel Gibson starring in this just yet. Before, the project was just speculation (well, since the 2003 cancellation anyway) but now that it's looking greenlit we'll see.

Watched Mad Max 2 on Blu-ray last night, first time I'd seen it in twenty odd years. Still fantastic and it showed what could be achieved with very brave stuntmen and at a time when CGI, as we know it now, didn't exist. Hope we get the real stuff like it was in those days.

Is'nt that the same Tom Hardy from Martha Cole's THE TAKE recently on SKY ONE?

From the BRONSON trailer it seems that this fellow is just a little too keen on playing psycho-loonies because his role on THE TAKE shows him to be capable of a very edgey and unpredictable performance.

Interesting.

Awesome IMO. One of the best Blu-rays I've seen.

Seconded (missed replying) and all the better, sounding like a broken record, for being shot in genuine anamorphic Panavision and just the old chemical colour timing and filters used when filmed.

But George Miller seems up for Fury Road; just wonder if he was really giving a wink that they were trying to get Gibson back, probably a fantasy but I would like to see old Mel back in the action hero mode.

Is the Blu-Ray release the uncut version of Mad Max 2? Used to have that on VHS but I don't think they ever released it uncut on DVD (at least as far as I ever found). One of my favourite movies of all time. The stunt work is simply outstanding. :notworthy

Project looks to be filming in the next few weeks, in Namibia with Tom Hardy.

But does anyone else think Gibson would have been especially perfect for this, aside from him having created the role?

He first played the part aged 21 and if anyone looks to have been surviving in a post-apocalyptic wilderness for 30 years it's Mel Gibson! The contrast would've been startling, but appropriate.

Even Hugh Jackman would have been a better choice than Hardy - great as Tom is, he just seems utterly wrong for this role. Still looking forward to seeing the result...

Chud.com did an update just the other day...http://www.chud.com/91342/yes-mad-max-4-is-actually-happening/

There seems to be A LOT of confusion on the ‘net (particularly among Chewers) about what in the word is going on with Mad Max: Fury Road, the fourth installment in George Miller’s post-apocalyptic action saga. That’s not surprising, given the sheer amount of problems that the project has had to overcome on its way to theaters. It initially almost happened back in the late ’90s. Mel Gibson as still on-board to return at that point and it was months away from happening when disaster struck. Turmoil in the region it was scheduled to shoot (somewhere in Africa, I believe) halted the production and both Miller and Gibson moved on to other things. All seemed lost.

Cut to a few years ago when George starting tooting the horn again after he made Happy Feet. He announced that he would not be making one new Mad Max film, but three! The idea was to do Fury Road first and then follow it up with a Happy Feet sequel before moving on to the fifth entry. Obviously that didn’t happen. Financing problems arose and Happy Feet Two become the priority. Once Miller got the money figured out, he was set to shoot the film in late 2010/early 2011 out in the desert of his home country of Australia. To his horror, the region he had selected was hit with the largest amount of recorded rain in decades. His wonderful desert locations were turned into water and green-filled landscapes! Bummer.

Miller didn’t give up though. Pre-production continued on the film and the special vehicles for the project were all completed on time. Hell, they’ve been sitting in the new location (Namibia) for months now awaiting the start of production! Tom Hardy came on board to play ‘Mad’ Max Rockatansky and Charlize Theron signed up to co-star. That’s right people, this is a full-blown stand alone sequel to the original three films. Hardy is playing Mad Max himself…not some ******* child or a character who has taken on the mantle…and the film will pick up a few years after the events of Beyond Thunderdome.

What of the rest of the cast? Details are still sketchy at this point. We know that Hardy and Theron are both still on board, with the former seemingly ecstatic about the project whenever he’s actually asked about it. Teresa Palmer, Nicholas Holt, Zoe Kravitz, Adelaide Clemens, Richard Norton, and Hugh Keays-Byrne* were all previously attached when it was scheduled to shoot a little over a year ago. Palmer has since dropped out, but no word has been given about the rest. I’m assuming most (if not all) are still on board, but there’s really no way of knowing until some more concrete information about the cast slips out.

Back on Monday it was announced that supermodel Abbey Lee Kershaw will be making her acting debut in the film. Some speculate that she may be replacing Palmer. Whatever her role may be, apparently she will be locked in a cage for a portion of the film. That sounds entirely likely, given the previous entries.

The $130 million production starts shooting in Namibia sometime in May. According to Miller, virtually all of the stunts (both physical and most importantly, vehicular) will be done practically. The script was penned by Miller and British comic writer Brendan McCarthy, who also designed many of the vehicles and costumes for the project. Rumors arose last year that they might actually be shooting the first two installments in the new trilogy back-to-back and that the title of the second would be Mad Max: Furiosa. Given the size of the budget and the fact that Tom Hardy isn’t locked down to star in anything after Fury Road just yet (aside from press detail on TDKR), it DOES seem like a definite possibility. Someone is just going to have to sack up and ask Hardy about it while he’s doing Batman PR this summer if we haven’t already found out by then.

So there you have it. Mad Max: Fury Road is finally happening and, by all accounts, should hit theaters sometime in 2014. It is intended as the first in a new trilogy of Mad Max sequels from George Miller and we might just be getting the second installment shortly after. God willing, hopefully Miller will be able to make all three.

LightStorm

Interesting. I hope it works out and we finally get to see the whole trilogy.

Note of interest though regarding a named cast member...Hugh Keays-Byrne. Hugh was in the very first MAD MAX film as 'Toecutter' who...

...is the character that gets sliced-and-diced by a Mack truck at the end.

(just in case...)

The only other thing I can recall seeing him in recently was FARSCAPE.
