View Full Version : The Parallax View & Funeral in Berlin

HMV has Alan J. Pakula's fabulous The Parallax View and Guy Hamilton's Harry Palmer romp Funeral in Berlin on pre-order, both listed as 'HMV Exclusives', (even though the latter was announced in Paramounts R2 2004 listing earlier this year).
It's good to have both films available in R2, even though they appear to be sans extras...however, I'm damned if I'm paying HMV an extortionate £15.99 for the privilege. No doubt they'll be generally available at sensible prices soon.

So many films, so little time...

Noticed HMV also has the Miss Marple box set listed as an exclusive.

I'm curious how HMV get all these exclusive discs, and why companies would want their potential market limited in such a way.

They’re only exclusive to HMV for a limited time and they pay more for the privelege. Funeral in Berlin is listed at etailers other than HMV.
They are not always released to other retailers, after a period.
HMV seem to have 2 permanent exclusives
Almost Famous Bootleg 2 disk (from Columbia) has been exclusive for a couple of years now
Brotherhood of the Wolf 2 disk (from Universal)
Just noticed about The Parallax View in the DVDTimes annoucement - that really sucks, frankly. Would be so much cheaper if it was available generally.

You can buy the disk as a region 4 (in PAL  ).
These are readily available from the usual suspects - EZYDVD, DVD Atlantic, DVD Crave. The disks on offer are all Widescreen!
There is a Region 2 available from Play - not clear if this is widescreen or not though.

Check them out on DVD Price check at the above link
Has anyone got the UK release of "The Parallax View" yet?
what I'd like to know is...
1) Is it in the correct 2.35:1 ratio coz the hmv website says it's 1.78:1 (I know they are probably not reliable for info but it's an 'exclusive' so I'd expect them to get it right!)
2) Is the disc dual-layer? The R1 (released 1999) is single layer, I'm hoping this release 5 years later will have better overall technical quality!
cheers

How can HMV (http://www2.hmv.co.uk/hmvweb/displayProductDetails.do?ctx=285;5;-1;-1&sku=134632) justify £16 for Funeral In Berlin...
I'm going for the Region 4 for less than a tenner

They also have Ipcress File in widescreen.
I find this whole 'exlusive' arrangement incredibly frustrating and refuse to partake. The Parallax View and Morvern Callar are both films high on my most wanted list BUT both are only available (on UK R2) via HMV 'exclusives'. I know it may be a case of cutting off my own nose to spite my face, but until they are on general release I will not buy either (not even from R1 and R4 land). Why can't HMV just be happy with exclusive covers and let us but from our retailer of choice.

Why not buy from R4 land - they are PAL encoded and likely to be cheaper than most UK etailers anyway.
Show your contempt by buying abroad, it was the UK distruibutor who agreed the deal, hit him in the UK/Europe branches pocket for doing something so dumb!
So has anyone got the UK version?
can anyone answer my two questions above?

What he said.
By the way, can any of you experts help with my film identification question on this thread (http://www.thedvdforums.com/forums/showthread.php?s=&threadid=260926) - it would be a fairly similar film to Funeral in Berlin, made about 15 years later - not a remake but similar themes.
to answer my own 2 questions about "The Parallax View", if anyone else wants to know this info...
yes it's the correct 2.35:1 ratio (and HMV website now updated)
It is a dual layer disc and the transfer is way better than the R1 from 5 years ago :)
