Auf Wiedersehen, Pet 4/1/04 9.00-10.00pm BBC1

Britannia Waives The Rules:
The gang are renovating a huge mansion in Russia for a rather dodgy client but then disaster strikes – the building blows up – and they are left without work or money. But when Neville is recruited as a spy, they end up with employment in Cuba’s capital, Havana. All the cast from last year's ratings megahit are back.

I'm going to be looking forward to this. I never watched the original series when it was on in the 80's. I then watched the last 'new' series with the gang moving the bridge to the Indian reservation and thought it was great. Have since got the original series on DVD and enjoyed them just as much!

If they prove anything like as popular as the last one then maybe they'll re-reconsider.
The last series was great (the previous two even better IMO), so hopefully these tonight will maintain the standard!

I must be old!!

My wife and the kids have all been made to sit thru the first two series again since I got them for xmas..she actually quite likes it now!

Really looking forward to this..times like this wish I had a TiVo!

Mixed feeling about series three, but compared to most of the rubbish tv produces nowadays its pure brilliance!

S3 was the only original programming I watched on bbc that year. It wasn't quite up to the same standard as the first 2, but given the length of time between s2 and s3, it was high enough to keep me happy.

Hopefully s4 will be great =)

Sod off the lot of you....:p AWP is my favourite show and there is no sign of it comming yet here in Australia. Although we did get series 3 although I only realised it was on two episodes before the end. Thank god for Dvd's :)

Mind you series 4 is released on DVD next month so not too much longer to have to wait.

I thought it was good, but not great by any means.
Why the hell did they leave Barry in Russia? I was suprised when they did this and then later thought about going ahead without Oz...most unlike the gang

Plenty of laughs though and much better than anything else on the telly at the moment, so its a  overall!

They were deported from Russia so not much choice really. Going ahead to Cuba without Oz was somewhat out of character but it is justifiable as they were all broke after working for months and having their pay blown up. Also it was necessary as a story device to create a bit of drama and also for Nev to pull some strings so we can see how important he is to MI5.

A great start to what will undoubtedly be an excellent new series, but I was disappointed to find that Mark Knopfler's excellent closing theme had been replaced. The new one just doesn't do the show justice.

Last night's opener attracted just over 8 million, it was beaten by Midsomer Murders.

I think this is good enough, it obviously had strong competition but MediaGuardian.co.uk are a right bunch of doommongers -- surely this is way OTT?Viewers say goodbye to Auf Wiedersehen, Pet

Viewers' long-standing love affair with Auf Wiedersehen, Pet may finally be fading, after the new BBC1 series launched last night with just over 8 million viewers.

The fourth series of the show about a bunch of itinerant British builders, starring Jimmy Nail and Timothy Spall, began last night with 8.1 million viewers and a 30% audience share between 9pm and 10pm, according to unofficial overnights.

It lost out to a new edition of ITV1's detective drama Midsomer Murders, which attracted 9.2 million viewers and a 37% audience share.

But more worryingly the BBC1 drama was watched by 3.5 million fewer viewers than the opening episode of the previous series in April 2002.

Auf Wiedersehen, Pet was a runaway success when resurrected by BBC1 nearly two years ago, after a 16-year gap since its second and final ITV1 run.

The six-part series launched with 11.6 million viewers and helped BBC1 to briefly overturn ITV1's longstanding Sunday peak time dominance in the late spring of 2002.
Also, aren't overnights quite a bit lower than the eventual figure, which takes into account VCRs? Just over 8 million is pretty good surely, and I'll bet it improves as the weeks go on. Anyway, I thought it was a good episode, certainly as good as the last series.

I think this is mostly due to poor advertising.

I love AWP, and thought the last series was fantasitc. i watch quite a bit of BBC 1,2,3 & 4 and only ever noticed one advert for this new series last week. Hence me being totally unaware that it was on last night.

I haven't seen it mentioned in any media either.

The last series was advertised months before airing.

I enjoyed last nights episode, however I still feel that the last two series pale in comparison to the first two, which in my opinion are probably the best British TV sitcoms ever made.

I'm sure I'm somewhat bias, due to coming from Newcastle and them being part of my childhood, but nevertheless last nights episode was still better than a lot of the rubbish on the box these days.

I'd strongly urge to those that are just seeing AWP for the first time to check them out. I often dig out the DVDs and give them a rewatch.

I totally agree with Tizza in that Oz is much better now, being more like the Oz of old.

stefmcd
05-01-2004, 22:16
Decent enough - but the first two had a rough, ready, gritty quality which is very absent.

The tone of the newer shows seems to be too 'comical'. The first shows didn't seem to underline every punchline the way the new shows do.

AWP is definitely the pinnacle of UK comedy drama.

It was ok, still not a patch on the 1st & 2nd series. It all seems a bit too politically correct.

I hated the dumbed-down script dialog in the 3rd series..An example from the 3rd series would be in episode 1 with Dennis asking what a "Ganger" was (as if he would not know been in the building trade) then another character would come along with an explanation.

He was often seen reading spy novels in the original series.
"License Renewed" by John Gardner appeared on his bunk in quite a few episodes.
He was reading "High Fidelity" by Nick Hornby last night. Not sure if that is an improvement or not!

Guess I was wrong, ratings for this series don't seem to be improving. So far it's a good 2 to 3m down on Series Three. A shame -- there's unlikely to be another series anyway but hopefully it won't deter the Beeb from making the planned special.

I do know that a couple of my friends missed Episode 1 and don't plan on picking it up now, just waiting for the DVD.Elsewhere last night ITV1's Midsomer Murders continued to get the better of Auf Wiedersehen, Pet on BBC1.

Detective drama Midsomer Murders was watched by 9.2 million viewers and attracted a 39% audience share between 9pm and 11.05pm.

Over on BBC1, the continuing adventures of Oz, Moxie and the Auf Wiedersehen, Pet gang in Cuba attracted 7.8 million viewers and a 30% audience share from 9pm.

Watched the first episode and thought it was great. The script was superb with references to the Dudley earthquake and laying the foundations for Nev not being able to refuse to go. One flaw though, on the plane Oz said 'Howay Havana' but he wasn't in the room when Dennis and Co. were told it was Cuba. OK so the guy on the plane told him he was going to Cuba but did he 'guess' Havana? Or am I being naive - is that the only place in Cuba there would be an embassy?

Mr Dubby:

They all got invited to a "Festival" by the brother of Ophelia. In a similar way to voodoo, one of the locals became possessed and Barry got nervous - consequently consuming a vast quantity of "spiked" local delicacies.

On the journey home, Barry started tripping out and crashed the truck into a cyclist delivering vegetables. Due to Cuban law which considers any traffic accident a potential crime - he is locked up until all evidence is given.

Episode ended with all others released and Barry locked up.

7.3m viewers last night -- Auf Wiedersehen, Pet continues to fall, while Midsomer Murders continues to rise (9.7m).

Go figure, after the spectacular success of Series 3 in 2002. It's lost about 3m so far: further proof that "nobody knows anything".

ITV must be pleased at least, given that it used to be an ITV programme.

I've found it to be an OK series thus far, with only occasional glimpses of the great first and second series of the 1980's. The third episode was better than the previous week for me, but last Sunday's fell off a little. Hope they don't rush into a finale as with the last series. Still think the producers should have made at least 8 parts, if not 10 to give the storyline more time to develop/expand.

Considering it was the last ever I thought the ending was a little flat.

Excellent series overall but looking back you’d have to concede that the joy of it lies almost 100% with the characters and they way they’re played as the story itself was slim to the point of anorexia. Surprised at how they left it with Oz.

Not a bad last ep.

THough I dont know why Barry was being held in prison

THe scene when he was let out of prison was very emotional, as was the bit when Neville confessed :)

Great series.

I too thought the ending was a tad flat, to me rushed they seem to tie everything up in the last 30 mins.

As for another series, I read that Pat Roach (Bomber) was pretty ill and wouldnt be able to make another series.

Still enjoyed watching this series though, not as much as the Bridge one. But one less good show no lost on a Sunday evening. This time last year we had Taken and 24 gracing our screens...

THough I dont know why Barry was being held in prison  End of episode 4, they all went to some semi-religious/voodoo-type ceremony with Ophelia and her brother. Ophelia warned them that the snack food was doped to aid the experience, and all but Barry avoided them. He stuffed his face and drove them all back, as high as a kite. He had an accident on the way back, knocking a fruit vendor off his bike and breaking his leg, and under Cuba's strict laws was imprisoned for it.

Considering it was the last ever I thought the ending was a little flat. They were talking about a one-off special. I hope the fact that it didn't do nearly as well in the ratings as Series 3 doesn't change their minds.

Although I'm still perplexed as to how it came worst off to Midsomer Murders, a programme which was tired before the first advert break of the pilot episode, I agree that this series could've had a better story.

The transporter bridge saga last time round was an excellent hook, and IMO this run needed something as strong.

Another problem -- they have an actor of the calibre of Timothy Spall in the cast and yet little was done with Barry. There were rumours, strenuously denied by all IIRC, that he was only available for 3 weeks of the 4 month shoot for this series. I reckon that could well be true -- he was always 'around', but never had that strong a presence.

Fingers crossed for that special all the same.

Edit: out on DVD tomorrow folks, if anyone's interested!

The lads got invited to some witch doctor \ voodoo thing. Barry ate some laced food and started tripping whilst driving. Then he hit a fruit seller whist seeing rainbows and got sent to prison as a car accident is illegal in Cuba.

Edit: Too slow.

Because Timothy Spall only signed up to do half the series!

Not a bad ending and it was good series although I do feel it could have been better.

Agreed, rushed ending really and could have done with being 8 episodes instead of 6 to allow for better storylines. There were only really two, Oz and Ofila and Nev the Spy. Would have been nice to see the place they were working on all finished etc.

Yep did seem rather rushed. Would've been nice to see Moxie get some success with his guinea pig too.

Definitely prefer the original single episode story format of the first two series (especially the first) rather than the serial format of these two new ones.

 Presumably the lack of series four 'catch-up' repeats has been done deliberately to increase DVD sales. But probably contributed to the lower viewing figures. Boo, shame on the BBC.

I looked at the clock and saw there was 10 minutes till the end and thought can they really finish every story off? Not really. Should have been at least one more episode.:|

I didnt even realise it was the last episode till after it had finished and saw it wasnt on next week, like people have said, i didnt feel it felt much like an ending with what seems like quite a few things left open unfinished.

Wierd ending. they were still in Cuba doing work but there are no more episodes.

It felt like there should have been more episodes but they had to wrap it up early for some reason.

Still brilliant but a shame that this is the last of it. still after series 1 and 2 I never thought their would be another series again so I guess we are lucky in that respect.

I'd have to agree with it felt rushed towards an ending. Felt the same with series 3. Both 3&4 could have done with another 1-2 episodes.

Loved this series far more than series 3. Both the scripts and performances (especially Oz) were superior. Location shooting was also superb.

Anyone else find Pru attractive in a posh-totty way?
