Here's a run-down of the main events:
20th Century Fox:
Fox has a number of top catalogue titles due in 2002. As usual, delays can always happen, but expect The Hustler, All That Jazz, The Day The Earth Stood Still, The Rose, Say Anything, Valley Of The Dolls and The Verdict.
New Five-Star editions of True Lies and Speed are already underway and due out in the second half of 2002. In the restoration pipeline is the classic The Grapes Of Wrath.
Some titles hoped for by many fans but still not actively in production include The Towering Inferno and The Poiseden Adventure, Miller's Crossing and Barton Fink!
Predator SE overseas in 2002 but not on Region 1 (M2K: I hope this one will be uncut)
Buena Vista:
TRON, Atlantis, Newsies, Dumbo and a new SE of Peter Pan. Beauty & The Beast, due in October 2002
Other animated gems include more Mickey Mouse and Donald Duck short collections, and semi-classic animated titles. Much has been made of the recent releases of such titles as Pocahontas, which were movie-only on DVD but fully loaded on laserdisc, and in fact a special edition version of that title plus other highly-awaited releases such as Hunchback Of Notre Dame are already complete... but when marketing decides to release 'em, dates will be announced.
20,000 Leagues Under The Sea and Swiss Family Robinson most likely in 2002, and other titles discussed including The Love Bug, the original Parent Trap!
Other live action fare surprisingly not on the way anytime soon are Ruthless People, Alive, both Stakeout movies, a special edition of G.I. Jane, Down & Out In Beverly Hills and Beaches, a special edition of Ron Howard's Ransom, Crimson Tide or Con Air.
And though no Miramax/Dimension reps were in attendance, we did get word that Ed Wood is finally in the planning stages for a hoped 2002 release, as well as Peter Jackson's Heavenly Creatures. And, of course, expect day & date releases to be well supported, with special editions of The Others and Pixar's Monsters, Inc., for a mid-2002 release. And, yes, delays continue to postpone the planned releases of special editions of Pulp Fiction, Jackie Brown and the Red, White and Blue trilogy.
Columbia TriStar:
Some special editions to watch out for include Used Car (complete with new Kurt Russell, Robert Zemeckis and Bob Gale commentary) and SE reissues of Stripes, two-disc Starship Troopers set, and Philadelphia
In bad news for Carpenter fans, Columbia is releasing a Starman SE overseas with new John Carpenter and Jeff Bridges commentary and deleted scenes, but due to poor Region 1 sales, has no plans to release it in Region 1. (M2K: Good news for us on Region 2, "I'll buy that for a Dollar" :D)
MGM:
SEs planned include The Fog and a reissue of Escape From New York (both due late 2002), The Last Waltz, The Sure Thing, The Producers (with new Laurent Bouzereau documentary), Raging Bull, Fargo, Thelma & Louise (1st quarter 2002) and The Usual Suspects. This last one will be packed to the gills, with commentary, two documentaries, more previously unseen footage, isolated score and tons more. Expect it it in the first quarter of 2002.
New editions of Rain Man and Dances With Wolves, and well as The Hunger, Last Seduction, Where Eagles Dare, and of course RoboCop.
Paramount:
First up, let's start with Star Trek. With The Motion Picture due out this November. The hope is to release a special edition of Star Trek II: The Wrath Of Khan in the first half of 2002. Also due in spring of 2002 is the first Next Generation set.
Kicking off the new year will be a real bonanza for Eddie Murphy fans, with all three Beverly Hills Cop films, Harlem Nights and Vampire In Brooklyn, all due this January.
Titles planned for 2003 include Trading Places, If..., the Brady Bunch movies, 1492: Conquest Of Paradise, Hud, Major League, Pretty In Pink, Some Kind Of Wonderful, and Altman's Popeye. Other possibilities include a Top Gun SE and a redone Jack Ryan trilogy.
And some "not planned at this time" titles include the Grease and Saturday Night Fever films, as well as Urban Cowboy, Regarding entry, Fire In the Sky, and SE reissues of Mission Impossible, Planes Trains And Automobiles, and Face/Off.
As for Indiana Jones, no new news as usual, and other big no-shows include DTS support, as Paramount has yet to commit to releasing any titles with the format.
Warner:
King Kong, also slotted for the restoration treatment (though not likely due out in 2002) is Hitchcock's Dial M For Murder
Due in 2002 include 20th Anniversary Editions of Blade Runner and Poltergeist Due in early 2002 is Joe Vs. The Volcano, and also on the Amblin docket is Innerspace, and new SEs of The Color Purple and Gremlins and Gremlins 2. Other SE reissues due in 2002 include, at long last, new versions of Goodfellas, Amadeus and One Flew Over The Cuckoo's Nest.
Universal:
Due in 2002 include a newly-completed special edition of the Spielberg classic Duel, with E.T. due in August and Schindler's List as well. A few other new special editions include a reissue of The Andromeda Strain, and a John Hughes collection with just completed supplements, all awaiting street dates...
And, sorry, absolutely no Legend or Back To The Future news! :(
