Just read the review by Jenz over at BulletsNBabesDVD and was wondering if either Jenz himself, Michael Brooke or others could offer their opinions on the film.

Couldn't see a review by Michael on the web site, i saw one by jenz.

Strange film with some extreme violence, some of the worst i've seen. Veers from stupid slapstick to absolute sickening acts. Approach with caution.

Was it Jenz? Sorry Jenz! :D

What is it? A horror/thriller yeah? In what way is the violence shocking?

very explicit, brutal killings. decapitation, rape, canibalism, infanticide. It's not like braindead or dawn of the dead, more like i spit on your grave or man bites dog.

This is one of those films that sound much worse than it is when it's described in print. Yes it's violent, very violent, but there's only one rape scene & one slaughter scene that's truly shocking.

I think overall it's a pretty good film, the problem is the fact that Danny Lee was the producer & he insisted that the first half of the film should be a comedy. This doesn't really work at all because the humour & acting is pretty weak. Couple that with the scenes of Anthony Wong plying his trade & you have a very uneven 1st half. Wong's scenes are tense, brooding & well acted, Danny Lee's scenes are Hammy & embarissingly un-funny, particulary when they're juxtaposed with scenes featuring rape & murder.
However, the film redeems itself by having the police capture Wong half way through, this is when we finally get a switch to out & out thriller, & it works well from then on. I found the last half hour to be very good, so the film kind of redeems itself.

a quite well acted category III shocker apparently based on real events quite strange that a number of sequels are available cheaply from asian sites but not this movie?
I think its getting harder to find probably better getting from amazon if its in stock as ya could wait a long time with *********.
There is a particular series of events concerning a family which are very hard to stomach, the whole story is interspersed with moments of slap stick which is in keeping with a lot of the asian cat III stuff.
Shocking stuff not for the weak of stomach!!

It was actually by Myk, and it has to be said, I've never read such a hammy, OTT review in all my life! It's as if William Castle himself wrote it!

I have a review over here:

I though Myk and Jenz were the same person?

Narshty,

Myk uploaded it. I wrote it.

The Untold Story is an exceedingly violent, gross HK Cat 3 movie that spirals through the movie first from Wongs violence outward, thru the violence towards Wong by the Police and finally back to Wong himself again.

It is a very strong stomach that can watch let alone *enjoy* this movie. If you have Children your view of this film will be different to that of a Single Person or someone without Kids.

It is a superbly acted movie Wong in particular but it is unlikely that you keep the movie. It is the kind of horror movie that you'll watch once and NEVER forget.

Questions?

Regards Jenz.
p.s. Myk and me are not the same. He's my Brother-n-Law.

Watch out for my copy going on sale soon then! :D I ordered it for £15 from ********* because I was intrigued at your review.

BTW, what does Category 3 mean?

The HK equivalent of 18 or NC-17. Basically no limits, although Untold Story was actually cut by the HK censors!! The Tai Seng release is the Uncut print, Anthony Wong's commentary will tell youwhat was cut in the HK version.
I myself am thinking about trading this on, it's not a bad film, it's just, like Jenz says, it's not the kind of film that you want to watch repeatedly.

It's a good job you got it from *********, it's bloody expensive (£20+) everywhere else.

It would probably be a lot more watchable if they cut out the comedy, rather than the violence. The whole police side of the story is almost completely irrelevant to the to film, seeing as they don't really do much detecting.

I found Untold Story to be an odd, odd movie, even by Hong Kong standards. The mish-mash of styles is something you become inured to as a regular viewer of HK films, but the sheer extremities on display here are frankly astonishing.

The best thing about it is Anthony Wong, though. He plays the killer as moronic, devious, unstable and ultimately deranged. He's no Hannibal Lector, that's for sure. Movie goers have been spoilt with the idea of killers as intelligent, purposeful and cold hearted geniuses... I suspect the truth of murder is a lot more like The Untold Story.

The Tai Seng DVD is pretty good... clear, good subs, well presented - though I confess I haven't had the guts to go back and listen to the commentaries yet.

I met Anthony Wong once - he had a big fake fur coat and a floppy hat on. :D This may or may not help with your viewing of this movie. ;)

Jenz, please don't take that the wrong way. The 'hammy' remark was aimed at lines like:

The Untold Story contains perhaps the most vicious serial killer to appear on screen, and as such this is perhaps our most controversial review.

The Untold Story has never been submitted to the UK BBFC for certification. It is doubtful that it ever will.

Due to the content of the film we have not included screenshots.

It has that tongue-in-cheek, eyebrow-raising quality of pre-VRA video nasty cover blurb, or a William Castle B-movie pressbook. I didn't consider it an insult, and would hope it wouldn't be taken as such. :)

Narshty, thanks for that. In all honesty I didnt take it as an insult. I did find the film gripping rather than enjoyable and tried to make the review reflect that.

In fact the only film I have ever really hated with a passion is Raped by an Angel aka Naked Killer 2.

I have now seen it and thought it was bad but there are only 2 real shocking scenes in the film.
