View Full Version : fitting phono plugs.

Thinking of buying a new DVD player with phono sockets on the rear. My current player connects to the 5.1 speakers with spring clips for the bare wires.
I need to fit phono plugs to the existing cables but would have to admit to being a bit ham fisted with a soldering iron.
Is there a phono plug product on the market which has clips on the back to accept the bare cables or alternatively, an idiots guide to fitting these on the net?
TIA.

you can get phono plugs with screws, rather than solder, try www.cpc.co.uk or www.maplin.co.uk
When you say your current DVD player has bare wire fittings do you mean its a all in one home cinema system (ie.The speakers are powered directly from the player) ?
If so then buying another DVD player with phono outputs won`t work as the phono outputs are to connect it to a seperate av amp and not directly to speakers !!

blast - i always make this mistake.
I was thinking of replacing an old "all in one, built in amp" jobby with this one (http://www.lidl.co.uk/gb/index.nsf/pages/c.o.oow.20031215.p.DVD_Player) from Lidl on Monday. My old system has a problem with DVD R/W disks although it is multi-region.
Happy with the existing speakers though so might need to look at buying an amp.
Would this JVC (http://www.empiredirect.co.uk/productdetails/index.asp?modelcode=JVC-RX5022RSL&affiliateid=95) unit be suitable?

That's right - sounds like you have amplifiers in your current player. What model/make is it?

It's a Grundig £99 currys job from a couple of christmases ago.
Sound is ok for my room size and the player is multi-region. However, I think it has an overheating problem which is causing chapter skipping etc. Either that or the slightest blemish on a disk will give it the stutters.

Yep that would work fine but i would much rather go for a Yamaha or Denon unit, Maybe this one (http://www.empiredirect.co.uk/productdetails/index.asp?modelcode=YAM-HTR5540RDS&clear=) as JVC aren`t really known for there AV amps !!

Does the player have a volume control knob, or on the back where the speaker wires go does it mention anything about power or impedance? If so then it's a DVD with amps, so you need a DVD player and surround amplifier. You definitely cannot wire the 5.1 output of a dvd player to your speakers as you will probably blow the outputs of the player.

Ok. Thanks for the advice Fozzybear and CARL. Might still get the player on Monday and then check in the sales for an amplifier.
