View Full Version : Anyone got the new 'Stargate' release

Mr Flibble

Just looking on Amazon, they have a new 'Stargate' directors cut available to buy now.

The film isn't superb, but its good to watch as a non-brainer on a saturday night sort of movie. Retailing at £15.99 it comes with some extended/added scenes, a commentary

and a DTS soundtrack (on R2, now there's a rarity) So, anyone got this?

I'll be using Vouchers to buy it, so no cash wasted here!

Any verdicts/reviews available?

I am wanting to get this movie, not sure where the best place to get it is yet, so any help would be appreciated.

Well, I have about £25 of credit on Amazon.co.uk - So I'm getting a CD for the little lady to keep her happy (it'll break the ice before I show her Phantom Menace and Stargate)

So obviously I'll be ordering from Amazon, they have it for £15.99, I'm sure it'll be cheaper elsewhere though. Another disc with DTS - yes please :)

I can't find any reviews for it though :( It must be out now though as Amazon are quoting next day dispatch

As far as I know this is the same version of the film as the R1 SE that's been out for some time. You have to be fairly familar with the film to even notice the extra scenes, they don't add very much.

I've found a review of it here (http://www.dvd.reviewer.co.uk/reviews/review.asp?Index=1638&User=1243&Page=1)

I was saving my Amazon credit to get a GBA, but then I'd end up spending more money I can't afford on games for it

Apparenlty the original R2 release had a pretty dodgy picture transfer. The film itself is OK - enjoyable enough and has got some re-watch potential for a sunday afternoon.

A purchase will be made :)

There are some rather dissapointing extras though apparently - but a commentary, trailer and DTS track will do for me :) I think this movie was a bit hyped-up on its initial release, so I was a bit dissapointed by it all, but watching it now its not all that bad really.

Same here, didn't think much of it when I first saw it, but revisited it when I got hooked on the TV series. What I'd like to get hold of is the multimedia CD rom making-of that was about at the time. That and the three-hour rough cut that IMDB mentions!

£14.99 at Bensons World - That includes free delivery (not sure if Play do free delivery or not)

Could be a good week for getting movies for me :)

Play do do Free Delivery, but I just remembered that I should be getting an Amazon £5 voucher this week hopefully so I can use that :)

I am of the other way round - I really enjoyed Stargate the movie when I first saw but after watching the TV series and then seeing the movie, I realised how little the movie contributed plot wise to the TV series. Things like the term 'Goa'uld' was thought up for the TV series - I just thought these things were brought up in the film.

A good disc, bought it this morning from the local v-shop (£17), had a quick look at it. I'll watch it all the way through in the week. By the way mine didn't come with a booklet, can someone let me know if a booklet is included.

Thing is, it's been so long since watching this movie I can only remember a little bit about it - should be enjoyable to revisit this title again.

The weakest part of the movie for me was the evil bad bloke at the end, just not very beleivable :(

Can someone jog my memory - was it set up for a possible sequel? I can't remember (remembe to use the spoiler tags though :) )

From recollection I don't think it was, but I guess the SG1 TV series is a kind of sequel.

Well, I've got this on order at Amazon, should be here tomorrow. But been down the town this lunchtime and seen it - the "limited edition" pyramid cardboard packaging looks awful.

Apparently the original idea was for a Star Trek style series of movies for the Stargate series but instead they went for the Stargate SG-1 TV series instead.

I don't think the film performed nearly well enough for any hope of a movie series, and it was only when MGM bought the rights that the TV series idea was developed. The original movie producers have nothing to do with the series, it went in a different direction than they had invisioned and they're quite scathing of it.

There is actually a sequel novel to the film that was written before the series was developed, but I've not read it.

I've always thought that some aspects of the original release were never really explored as much as they could have been

I'm thinking about the way in which Kurt Russels son died in an accident - this added another dimension to his character that was never really developed

Do the added scenes really add anything? I'm looking forward to getting this now :)

The extra footage adds almost NOTHING to the story, IMDB detail the scenes.

that's covered in the series. i think that's the ep with the weird blue crystals.

I used the old Hotmail £5 code to get it from Amazon for £11.85!!
There's a few £3 amazon vouchers knocking about in the Bargain forum.

I've got the R2 Dutch version, the DTS soundtrack is superb as is the picture except when you come to the extra scenes(seems to be the same as the R1).

AFAIK the extra scenes were transfered from video and they do stick out a bit because the rest of transfer is so good.

It's a pity the Theatrical cut is not on there via seamless branching like the R1.

I saw this on its cinema release and have an old VHS copy from Sky kicking around somewhere - whats the difference between the theatrical release and the video version

Deaks
15-10-2001, 16:08
I was gonna post the differences but can't figure out how to put in that spolier friendly black box. So have a look HERE (http://us.imdb.com/AlternateVersions?0111282) for the extra footage.

I can't remember any of those bits

Still, it was in 94 when I saw it at the cinemas (AGES ago now :( )

God I'm getting old!

Is the version out in the shops today DTS, as I look at the box and all it says is DD5.1?
If not, is the dutch version the one to get?

Mr Flibble
15-10-2001, 17:08
The review that I linked to, and also the description at Amazon have it as coming with a DTS track - I think someone here bought it today - perhaps they can confirm for us :)

nicknack101uk
15-10-2001, 17:51
Yep, it's DTS and DD. It's got the DTS logo on the back cover.

Xenole
15-10-2001, 18:31
Are you sure? I definitely didn't see DTS anywhere, and I've looked at a few websites inc Play247 and DVDStreet and they say DD5.1 only.

Is it just me or do any of you think that the packaging on Stargate is a bit crap, like some dodgy promo wallet thing.

Does the R2 Dutch release have an amaray?

WildThing

My brothers copy of Stargate also came in the crappy flat packed pyramid sleeve. I've just brought Stargate, but luckily my version came in a proper amaray case...I was so relieved, because I hate the pyramid case.

The French Release is a 2 disc set with the theatrical cut on Disc two - and it has more extras than over here... PLUS - DTS SOUND ON BOTH VERSIONS OF THE FILM! Go to www.dvdfr.com and type "Stargate" into the search (without the inverted commas) to see all the details!:D

I got mine today from Amazon. Its in the Amaray case and doesnt include any kind of booklet.

The subtitles which come on when they are speaking in the Anchient Egyptian language are TERRIBLE. They look aweful and not only that there are SPELLING MISTAKES!

They totally distract from the picture with them being in some horrible (System?) font and being huge.

Also has anyone noticed that the www.momentumpictures.co.uk link on the back cover doesnt work, just goes to a uk.net page or something. I was trying to get an e-mail address so that I could complain about those dammed subtitles. My brother could have made better subtitles and he can barely use a computer.

16-10-2001, 17:34
Well mine arrived from Amazon today too, but in the "limited edition" pyramid cardboard case, must be pot luck, frankly I would have prefered a standard case. Haven't watched it yet tho so can't comment on the subtitles.

Shingster

The Pyramid casing is absolutely hilarious, you can't take the disc out without having to collapse it!!!!! I wonder who the genius who designed it is!! The words chocolate & fireguard spring to mind.

Suppose the only good thing about the cardboard pyramid is that it's not as bad as the R1 Total Recall tin. At least the pyramid won't fall over. ;)

Just did the same again, and got the same result as earlier today. The one you want is second from the top and listed as 'version longue', and due for release on December 4th 2001.

Took the Momentum R2 round me mate's house to give it the once over on his Tosh 28"WS & DTS set-up & I've got to say Momentum have done it again in the picture stakes, absolutely pin sharp, only some nasty grain creeping in for a couple of secs in the odd shot here & there stop this from reaching Oh Brother & Reservoir Dogs standard.
What does elevate this release above momentum's other efforts is the sound, the DTS track is absolutely spot on, particulary during the Stargate sequence!!!
We'd just been checking out the Phantom Menace disc before we put Stargate on & we both agreed that SG blew PM out the water in the visual stakes in some scenes!
There's hardly any room for improvement in the A/V stakes, so unless you want the added extras of the French release I recommend any fan of SG to buy this disc now!!!

I was just about to ask about the quality of the DTS track - but no need after Shingsters glowing post there :)

I'm still waiting for my £20 GC from Amazon - SEND IT NOW
