I saw this at a preview at the weekend.

Great stuff. Incredible B&W cinematography. Fine perfomances, well worth seeing.

Like many Coen Brothers films, it moves along at a pretty sedate pace, but it still draws you in.

One thing I have to ask though. (slight spoiler here)

What was all that flying saucer business about?

What's the gist of the story?

It's the traditional Coen brothers tale of ordinary bloke getting involved in shady business and getting way out of his depth.

In slightly more detail (this isn't the whole film, just the set-up)

BB Thornton's character is offered a business proposition, but needs money to buy in. He knows his wife is having an affair with her boss, so he sends an anonymous blackmail note, claiming that he'll let her husband (i.e. himself) know if the boss doesn't pay up.

And then things start getting messy.

I was very surprised by this; it begins in a very Coen-esque style, with the usual weird characters and mannered dialogue, but it's also very gripping, in an almost hypnotic way, and, by the end, it's (IMO, of course) the Coens' most genuinely moving film to date, thanks largely to Thornton's fantastic performance as the eponymous man. The use of black and white works perfectly as well.
