A colleague at work has just spent a small fortune on a Home Cinema system. He bought it as a package from a dealer and just asked for a very high quality DVD player that would play all regions. I think he paid about £1,000 for the player alone.

For some reason (I think he thinks a Region 1 will damage his player) He has only bought and played region 2 disks. He now wants to test his player to see if it will play RCE disks. Does he need a Region 1 RCE disk or will a Region 2 RCE disk say it wont play if the player is not RCE capable?

I have R2 Charkies Angels, is the RCE? would it show up any problems on his player if it is?

He wants to but the complete series of Voyager from the states. he doesn't want to spend all that money if the disks wont play! Someone told him that the Voyager disks are RCE protected, is that true anyway?

Thanks for taking the time to answer.

The R2 Psycho is RCE.

R1 Directors Cut of Last of the Mohicans (DTS) is too.

My DV737 needs to be set to a region (rather than region-free) when playing RCE disks (well, those two at least). So, if his region is set to region-free and it's not automatically RCE compatible, an RCE disk from any region should refuse to play. If that happens, the machine will probably need to be set manually to that region number ... if he knows how.

I'm pretty sure that Columbia Tristar are the only peeps that do RCE, so buying Voyager :gag: R1 should be OK.

The only RCE disc I have is Final Fantasy R1 and on my old S525 I had to manually set it to R1 to get it played, my recently purchased NS-930V doesn't need any fiddling at all.

doesn't RCE only come into play when you try to play any region RCE disk on a non specific ie 0 region player?

if your player is set to R1 it will play R1 RCE

Similarly if its set to R2 it will play R2 RCE disks.

If your player is set to R0 it wont play an RCE disk.

Or have I got this wrong?

RCE discs will play on a player that is already set to that region. RCE was brought out to prevent multiregion players that automatically selects the correct region from playing discs that it shouldn't eg R2 player can't play R1 discs. This is usually got around by manally selecting the region code on the player (if allowed to do so)

R1 Resident Evil is RCE and I heard that the R1 Spider-man was as well.

On my previous [Toshiba] player you had to spin a 'normal' disc of that region first which would set the player.

Then just eject and replace with the RCE disc

Whether that would work in other instances with different players which have RCE issues I don't know
