View Full Version : Sound query over Kubrick remasters
I'm thinking of buying my two favourite Kubrick films - The Shining and Full Metal Jacket - but am unsure of which region to buy.
What confuses me is the sound - UK and US releases state 5.1, yet the R4s (which I'd prefer because they don't come in snappers...sad, I know) say the sound is 1.0?
Has anyone got the remastered R4s? What's the sound like?
Does anyone have any ideas? Any advice will be appreciated!
Thanks
Tony
Shining R1 is the full length version. R2 is shorter.
Cue Deep Thought . . . erm, sorry i meant MB :D

Well the R2 is the European version so it is this version you have most likely seen and not the longer American cut (well I have anyway!)
I bought The Shining and 2001 on R2 and both have excellent picture quality (and I also managed to get both for £13 each in WHsmith's offer!)

Full Metal Jacket is the same in R1/R2/R4, and R4 is the cheapest. The R2/R4 version of The Shining is shorter (by 34 minutes I think) than R1, but don't forget it was cut by Kubrick and was his preferred version - but why not buy both?
If packaging matters, the R4s also come in Amarays, not cardboard snappers.
The picture and sound quality of the the new remastered versions is excellent in all cases.

So many films, so little time...
Has anybody got the R4 remastered editions fo these? If so, what is the sound quality like?
PS - Thanks for your thoughts so far!

I got them from R4 as part of the Kubrick boxset recently; no complaints.
