My parents have finally decided to get rid of their 21inch JVC TV from the front room. They want to get a 32 inch widescreen TV, DVD player and surround sound. Could you recommend a get set to buy?

I will also be using this so I would like them to buy something half-decent. I've only ever had my 14inch TV and old Wharfdale 750 DVD player. So I would now like to see some of my DVD's on a good widescreen TV and hear them in surround sound.

I think their price range is about £500-600. So could they get something good for this money? Could they get a DTS set up? That would be a plus side for me but they probably don't know what this is, so we could settle with just surround sound.

I'm sure they wouldn't mind buying seperates if they get the best final outcome.

Please help my parents get a good set up! I'd be very grateful!
:D

Thanks,

Psycho

They're going to struggle to get all of that for that price without buying the cheapest brands.

Psycho's so exited he's lost the power of grammar. ;)

I'll have a look about, but you're not going to get 5.1 and a half decent 32" WS TV. Maybe a reasonable 28" is possible, which is probably a more acceptable size for your parents, yet still a significant upgrade from their 21" TV.

EDIT
First the TV:

28" TVs were discussed in this thread:
http://www.thedvdforums.com/forums/showthread.php?s=&threadid=244524
with the SAMSUNG WS28M64NS *PURE FLAT* SILVER (http://www.qed-uk.com/?i=0-PASq3OaITI&vp=6&bg=166&bp=64nss&bi=0) getting good reviews for £328 and QED prices are including delivery.

Empire Direct (http://www.empiredirect.co.uk/productlist/index.asp?newlist=true&clear=&department=ctv&subdepartment=wide-screenctv) are doing some good deals on 28" TVs at the moment, so worth a browse (though delivery is around £20 a set).

Surround sound:
That leaves approx. £300 for an all-in-one DVD / AMP & speakers.
A search on Kelkoo.co.uk gives (I don't know anything about these all in one types) www.hifibitz.co.uk (http://www.hifibitz.co.uk/warehouse/details.asp?productid=SONHTP1100) has the Sony HTP-1100 for £290 delivered, is multiregion with all cables and three free DVDs.

That brings in the whole setup for under £620. Any good?

Yeah, I think a 28" would be fine for them. If you could have a look and let me know that would be great! I'm starting to get fed up with watch my films in my small room and only in stereo. Bring on the widescreen TV and surround sound!

Have a look above (my work web access failed for an hour so there's a bit of delay).

If anyone knows anything about the DVD / surround package then chip in.

Hm, better check all the links work... EDIT and they do!

Have a look at the Pioneer DCS-505 at Empire Direct (http://www.empiredirect.co.uk/productdetails/index.asp?modelcode=PIO-DCS505) for £299 delivered. It is region 2 but order a DIY upgrade from forum sponsors DVD Chips (http://www.dvdchips.co.uk/) for £27 (including forum discount).

A multiregion system with good power output (75w per channel) for £326.

Another good choice, I had forgotten about DVDChips. Both setups give you DTS (which you wanted) and are of 'wife / mum' friendly size. ;)

Thanks for that! I really like the look of the Pioneer DCS-505! I might finally get to see what all the DTS heads are going on about! :D

I'll let me mum and dad have a look and see what they think of the TV and DVD player but I'm happy with them!

So the only thing I'll need to get is the DIY upgrade to make it region free. How is this DIY? Will I need to open up the unit or is it like a CD, which I load into it, and it does every thing for me?

Thanks again!!

EDIT: I like the look of both DVD players! I thought the Sony one wasn't DTS.

So which player is better out of the Sony HTP1100 DVD Home Cinema System and the Pioneer DCS505?

The upgrade tool from DVD Chips will be a chipped remote control that is rented out. You follow the simple instructions and your player will be multiregion. You need to return the remote control within 21 days or a charge is levied.

As regards the players, I don't honestly know which sounds better but the Pioneer has a better specification (75w per channel and MP3 playback). The two fronts on the Pioneer include nice stands.

Found some reviews of both systems (but you'll have to BabelFish them ;) ):

Sony HTP-1100 (http://www.kieskeurig.nl/nl/product.nsf/search1/Sony%20HTP%201100.htm)

Pioneer DCS-505 (http://www.kieskeurig.nl/nl/product.nsf/search1/Pioneer%20DCS%20505.htm)

Click on 'reviews' tabs for owner's comments. It looks like the Pioneer is the better system.

I think that will make a nice little 'starter' system.
