Anyone actually able to say which is better. Hear the R2 transfer is awful. Not bothered about extras, interested in the transfer quality alone.

Comments from owners of respective Regions are welcome so that I can decide whether either are worth having.

DVD Debate have a review of the R2 Season 2 disc. They say it's been sourced from a composite master (which caused the poor quality)

I have not seen any reviews of the R1 discs but they are an A&E release, A&E have a habit of using composite masters for their dvds.

Since the original source would have been PAL video, instinct says R2. I was perfectly happy with the transfer - nothing outstanding, but it's the acting and dialogue I watch this for, not the immaculate visual sheen!

I agree that it is more about the delivery than the medium, but having the best quality transfer available is after all why we abandoned VHS in favour of DVD.

Bought the R2 version, quality quite good. Have seen R1 version at a friends - the difference in quality is minimal.

My point is that a PAL original transferred to PAL DVD is probably going to be better than a PAL original converted to NTSC (with the corresponding loss of detail and altered frame rate), so on that basis I'd instinctively favour R2.

I'm not disputing that for one moment, I too would lean toward the Region 2 on that basis, however I had heard less than complementary comments made about the Region 2 transfer and did not want to blindly make that assumption without first canvassing the views of those of this forum, perhaps some of which are in a position to comment on the quality of the Region 1 transfer. It also might give rise to somebody with a good knowledge of forthcoming releases jumping in and saying, "Don't bother with either, Jeeves and Wooster Ultimate Edition boxset is set for release in February," or something like that.

Well I've decided to go for Region 2 - anyone want to stop me?!?
