I've just heard about this RCE thing whilst browsing www.play247.com for some DVDs. I'm sorry if this is an old topic, but from what i've read it sounds like an 'upgrade' to the original region coding thing preventing people from playing different region DVDs on their region 1, region2, etc.. players. So should I simply not buy DVDs which are RCE encoded? I play my DVDs on my computer which contains a Pioneer 106 (?) DVD ROM Drive, and have had no problems playing different region DVDs in the past. Can anyone help me out? I have not tried playing an RCE encoded DVD on my system in the past to my knowledge.
Thanks.

RCE has now been abandoned. It was tried out but caused problems with US DVD players as well, so they dumped it. Only a few DVDs have this feature on.

Forget about it.

don't know how you can say it has been abandoned when the recently released R1 Knights tale has RCE.

Ahhh. OK. I thought it was. Aaaarrrggghhh. And I thought RCE was dead and buried.

You can normally get round it by starting the dvd on a later chapter than the menu.

The other way to get round it with multi-region players is, instead of setting the player to play all regions, get the player to play the region the disc is from. And then change it back after you have viewed the DVD.

Bit of a pain doing it every time though. :(

I may be talking garbage as I don't own an RCE disc.

You can also try putting a non RCE region 1 disk, into your machine. Let it play until it gets to the FBI warning, (this will hard switch your player to region 1) then eject the disc, and put in the RCE one.
You should be able to use this disc as normal.
Remember you will have to do this every time you want to watch an RCE encoded disk.

Definitely a pain in the backside.

Hello,

Anyone know how to overcome it on a Sony DVP-F11?

Firstly, NEVER trust that a disc is RCE protected because Play247 say it is. They're a great company, but they really like to cover themselves against returns and are overly vigilant on the subject. Secondly, RCE is just 3 letters and very easily entered into a search engine... ;-)
