I've read through the recent Godfather threads and haven't seen this mentioned but if I've missed something, feel free to close this.

I've just watched The Godfather tonight and was puzzled by the sound quality. A lot of the dialogue sounds very 'echoey' - as if the scenes were recorded in a ceramic tiled bathroom! This is just about bearable for the indoor scenes but when the action moves outdoors it sticks out like a sore thumb.

Is this just my copy? Is it a fault? Is this the best Paramount can do with the material? Or has it always sounded like this?

I have to admit I was none too impressed with the sound either.

Probably just me but I had to put the subtitles on to hear some of the speach.

I noticed this especially in Part II where some dialogue sounded very "metallic" as if it was recorded on an old tape deck.

I noticed this too, also how come the bits where they are speaking in italian had no subs ? Yet when you turned subs on they were there ?
When I last watched it on vhs I can't remeber if it had subs on to translate or not.

I've only watched the first Godfather movie so far, and on both of my DVD players it automatically turned on the subtitle stream that just translated the Italian, and none of the other dialogue (subtitle stream no. 8).

I thought that the sound quality on the first disc was pretty bad, but the second was even worse. I haven't got round to watching the third installment yet.

Just watched the Godfather R2. Subtitles came on OK and the sound was fine:rolleyes:

I also noticed the poor sound quality in places. It did sound as if some scenes had been redubbed in a public lavatory.

On my player, the subtitles for Italian speech came on automatically when no subtitles were selected, but when I went into the disc setup menu and selected English subtitles, these only appeared over English dialogue, and nothing was displayed in for Italian dialogue. Bizarre.
