£300 won't get you a portable dvd player up to the job. Unless you like squinting at pixellated jagged edged approximations of what's on the dvd. :)

forget buying one then lol I wont use it enough to pay more than £300 lolol
Disagree with the above view. The Cyberhome is £270 in Smith's and Novatech and is highly rated in magazine reviews. There has been a thread on it here in the past. It can be multi-regioned as well - again there has been a thread on this previously here.
Can't speak from personal experience but on the basis of other's I was planning to get one after Xmas when the prices should drop a bit I guess. Useful for keeping kids entertained in back of car plus when away on holiday or work.
Sampo DVE-P1 (http://www.area450.com/thesampozone/players/dvep1.htm) has just been released but will set you back £360.
I'm currently evaluating one and have to say it's fantastic - 7 inch 16:9 TFT screen, handles DVD, VCD, SVCD, CD-R, CD-RW, .mp3, .jpg, .mpg, .mpeg, .vob
