Sorry if this has been answered elsewhere, but will Jackson be doing the same thing with ROTK as with the previous two, by only providing a decent (more) complete version on DVD?

It's annoyed me that the cinema release has all these holes in it that the DVD extended edition fills in

I've only having recently watched FOTR EE on DVD, but it's so much better than the cinema release

Almost definetly.

I seem to remember PJ confirming that the Christopher Lee / Saruman bits that he's cut out of the theatrical edition of ROTK will be in the Extended DVD.

So yes!

nathankw is correct. peter jackson stated on AICN that the cut Saruman scene (singular!) will indeed appear on the dvd.

however, i predict several threads prompted by the likes of "my mate heard down the barbers that because the theatrical cut of ROTK is longer than the other two, there is no real justification for an extended version" between now and whenever the extended version is officially announced.

Thanks all - not surprising but still disappointing.

I just hope it's not too long before the extended edition is released... though I've heard rumours that it won't be until next Christmas, which would be far too long!

no. that's just how long it takes to do it right. the EE of the two towers has only just come out a few weeks ago, and they've been at yearly intervals so far.

however, it is possible it will be quicker this time around as jackson doesn't have another movie to work on at the same time. that said, you'd think new line would want to bleed every last drop of revenue from the theatrical release for at least six months worldwide. that takes you to july. then the standard discs have always been released in august, with the EE in november.

basically, on past 'evidence' and all information available so far, there is no reason whatsoever to suppose that the EE dvd of ROTK will be out before november 2004.

Will he not be working on King Kong or will that just be in the pre-production stages?

I know a person who works on the film and she said they were filming some scenes for the Extended-DVD in the autumn. If I was in NZ I could have being an extra.

My friend filmed his "extra" bit for the third film way back three years ago - only to find out last month that it's on the cutting room floor ! It will be back in the Extended-DVD though...

I've always wondered how Peter Jackson managed to convince New Line to let him film so much material only to throw it away. I know that on most films a substantial amount of footage ends up on the cutting room floor, but the initial cut of FOTR was supposedly 4 1/2 hours, for christ's sake. It makes me shudder how much time and money they could have saved by having a bit more conviction and foresight instead of just filming a crapload of stuff and then not using it.

Whiggles, i take it you will be going the region 1 route with the Two towers DVD. I believe you had the same problems as myself regarding the EIV transfer on the Fellowship EE last year.

In an interview with norwegian newspaper VG, Peter Jackson said that the initial cut for ROTK was 4 hours and 15 mins, and added that most of this would make it to the extended version of ROTK.

Well, there is the fact that the last two EE's were released in November to coincide with the upcoming release of the next film in the series. The fact that this is the last in the series could quite possibly mean that the EE's release date will be moved forward.

Tim Fleming, indeed that "could quite possibly" mean the release comes forward. my post says that. that's why i added that extra paragraph. it's basic point is that the circumstances are different this time round. but there are still all sorts of reasons why the release may, or may not, be at the same time of year as the last two. so while there is nothing concrete it seems safer to assume they will stick to the pattern.

I read here (http://www.stuff.co.nz/stuff/0,2106,2746167a2202,00.html) that PJ was hoping to have the extended cut finished by Christmas to clear the way for work on King Kong:

"Jackson, who will be in Los Angeles tomorrow for The Return of the King's United States premiere, said he still had to edit an extended version of the third Lord of the Rings film for DVD late next year. He wanted it done before Christmas.
But after taking a short holiday, he would spend most of his time from January working on King Kong, inspired by the 1933 film."

A spring release would be very nice
