View Full Version : Ahoy! Kiss of Dragon - avoiding the pirates me hearties

Just got a DVD of KoD from Ebay seller - Malay import, sound awful, picture barely acceptable (reminds me of the bad ol' days of VHS :D ) Needless to say it's going back sharpish

Does anyone know how to tell a legit version from a pirate (without buying it of course  )

I have seen two covers for KoD, one lightish, the other dark (I have the dark one)

Any suggestions ?

do you mean Kiss of the Dragon - the new Jet Li film that isn't even out in UK cinemas yet? the one thats not had an R1 DVD release and therefore makes anything but possibly a Hong Kong import (from a legit source like DDDHouse.com, of which there isn't one) a blatant bootleg? :D

if its a different film then obviously the above can be ignored :)

You've got the right one - KoD
So you're saying there aren't ANY legit versions, not even from Hong Kong ?
What about Coolashop/DVDshelf/HiViZone ?

And as to release dates, I have an R0 version of Accidental Spy, which I don't think has been on general release ? I don't think you can get Rx versions of that either, but does this mean that mine is an "unofficial" (read pirate) version ?

It seemed ok

Nope, no official version available AFAIK.

If DDDHouse.com get in a HK R0 then it'll be legit, but there is no such thing as of now.

Accidental Spy is available in many versions and your R0 (presume HK copy) is almost certainly legit (its only stuff off Ebay that I don't trust, and a few e-tailers). What you're forgetting is that Accidental Spy is a Hong Kong Jackie Chan title and therefore the chances of a UK/US Theatrical Release is extremely slim - plus in Hong Kong they release official DVDs almost as soon as the film ends its theatrical run....you might see something like this happen with Kiss of the Dragon, but seeing as its an American Jet Li film the chances are less likely (although a CTHD type situation could occur where a much sought after R3 version becomes available long before the R1/R2)....

oh yeah, R1 is slated for 22nd January 2002.

Is there any site that will inform peopleof when legit versions become available ?

1st 15 mins seemed rather good (if a little violent)
That's all I watched, because the sound was terrible

just your usual DVD News websites really...

www.dvdfile.com
www.thedigitalbits.com

are probably the best R1 sites

www.dvdtimes.co.uk
www.r2-dvd.org.uk

are probably the bets R2 sites

www.bulletsnbabesdvds.com
www.asiandvdguide.com

are probably the best Hong Kong/Asian specific sites....

but don't ask me where I got that Kiss of Dragon date from! I keep a list of release dates and title info/prices but i can't remember where i found out the KoD release date (its not listed anywhere i looked just now)...

and of course - just look up the DVD you're about to buy on any legit retailer before purchasing, and in the case of R0 HK titles look them up on www.asiandvdguide.com - if its on their then its legit - if it aint on there, then beware them pirates :)

As for KoD - I'm really annoyed they moved back the Cinema release over here, i've also seen an appalling bootleg (just didn't pay for it :D ) that sounds very much like the one you've got (with appalling sound/picture quality) and would really like to see it properly as I personally enjoyed it even in this awful state...
