Universal had to cut The Mummy Returns to get a <12> certificate - if they had not it would have been a <15>. Now they publish both The Mummy and The Mummy Returns in one digipack and the package gets a <15> because The Mummy had a <15>.
Instead of now putting a <15> version of The Mummy Returns in the package (since it will not change the rating anyway) they put the cut version of The Mummy Returns in it.
If this isn't the craziest example of how stupid the BBFC rules are I do not know what is.

Sounds like Universal either cannot be bothered mastering 2 versions of The Mummy Returns or felt that the cuts were negligible in their effect on the movie.

Mind you, given that the maxim for The Mummy Returns was probably 'lets see just how many set-pieces and cgi-fests we can fit into each reel' the cuts just might help the movie flow a little better :D

Any idea if the 2-dvd pack will include the original version of The Mummy or the SE?

The package seem very nice. But why go to all that troble just to bring out a box set when No.3 comes out? If i where them i would have just brought out Mummy returns in an amary and be done with it

It's going to be the "Ultimate Edition" of the Mummy - and it will not be released seperately.
That way they try to force everbody who really liked the first but doesn't like the second to buy both just to get the UE of The Mummy (which includes two additional commentaries).
In R4 the UE was released seperately - so I'll probably buy it there.

I thought that the R2 version of The Mummy was uncut anyway? Its rated 15, as opposed to the 12 rated VHS.

The UK Version of The Mummy was cut to achieve a 12 at the cinema. The cut was to the Hanging of O'Connell scene.

This cut version was released on VHS.

The scene was restored (it was actually just trimmed) to the 15 Cert DVD.

The forthcoming The Mummy Ultimate Edition features this 15 cert uncut version.

The Mummy Returns had a Headbutt cut to obtain a 12 cert at the Cinema that the distributor wanted.

This version (still cut) will be released on UK VHS and UK DVD both on its own and it the Mummy Pack.

The R4 versions of both movies are uncut (and available now).
