The Robbie Williams 'competition' is a joke!

What was his first UK No1? Angels, Freedom or Old Before I Die?

The answer is....Millenium!!

None of those 3 got to No1.

Like to see how they get out of this....

Yup, a quick bit of research seems to corroborate this cock-up.

Theres going to be an uproar!
Changing the competition!!

Lorne.t
28-11-2003, 19:27
I called up to complain as I wanted to go to Australia!
The BBC have had loads of phonecalls.
They've given out a prize to someone who called with the wrong answer, before they changed it,so he should be stripped of the prize.
Cruel and heartless but true none the less.

Oh my gawd what a laugh this has given me, truly!!!!

Yup I thought there was a smell of pee in the air when the 'Robbie' comp was won by a man with the wrong answer, but then he didnt have the right one to choose from anyways:D

Also if 'the teeth' had said once more 'ALL NEW totp' then I would have tied that bloomin' ribbon that woman was dangling from,(was willing her to fall or somethin - now that would have been good tv! obviously for her to have a soft landing on top of the blazin' squad:eek:)

sorry,....... around his bloomin gub!!

Aye I did think it was a load of old tosh, or I am I showing all of my thirty years tonight!

I feel sorry for kids today that this crap is their musical heritage in years to come. I wonder if rubbish like Westlife, Robbie, Gareth etc realise they are responsible for the degrading of pop(ular) culture every time time they inflict more of their packaged pap on the public? [nice alliteration don’t you think?]

Amusing opinion on music - some swearing though!

I hated the show........exactly the same as every other TOTP, CDUK, any saturday morning show.
The presenter was a total knob as well.

What they need to do is search out new music rather than publicising the same few people all the time, perhaps more like the Old Grey Whistle Test.

I do wonder how many of those people will be on kids tv this morning?

If it wasn't for the BBC especially, S-Club 6/7/8, Atomic Kitten, Blazin' Squad etc would never have any publicity. They just saturate every single programme.
At least Holly Valance and Rachel Stevens will never appear on TOTP again which is a Godsend.....!

According to Andi Peters you are, he said the show was aimed at those in their early 20's. he then hoped to get a "halo effect" by attracing the younger teen audience as well as the over 30's.

To be honest the show was ok..ish, not sure about the presenter but there's not that much you can do with a "chart show" and at least they are trying a new format.

jonathan.e
throwaway pop aimed at the teen market has been around for years, today is no different.

Difference is that 15-20 years ago it was only a part of the music scene in general whereas now this over-packaged junk is all (with a very few exceptions) there is in the charts. Soap stars, girl/boy bands and ex-fame Academy/Pop Idol types dominate and like weeds that go unchecked in a garden they are killing off the good stuff and I daresay discouraging quality people from even thinking of going into music.

I wasn’t kidding earlier, I do really feel sorry for people now in their teens/early 20s. What are they going to be listening to in 15 years that’ll bring back memories of formative moments in their life? So Solid Crew, Holly Valance, Darius, Gareth Gates? That’s the soundtrack to their youth?! :gag:

It's their own fault for buying this crap.

I wonder how many of the little girls who rushed out to buy the new Westlife single would have a clue who Barry Manilow was or would be seen dead actually listening to the original version of Mandy had Westlife not released it?

I must admit that some of the people in the studio yesterday weren't the usual 10 year olds looking like 15 year olds+........can't see many people in their early twenties listening or admiting to listening to a lot of the stuff that appeared on that show. Well, maybe Kylie who is very popular with people of all age ranges.

There is plenty of good music out there, it's just you generally have to rely on the internet now to find anything in the first place and/or word of mouth.

That’s just the end result of the relentless marketing and rotation on MTV and Radio 1. If that’s all kids are shown/played then they end up making their choices from the limited range on offer. Endless repetition is also the key to breaking down people’s common sense to the point where they go out and buy Will Young’s new cover version almost without thinking. Often, as you say, without knowing or caring that the original he’s murdering is sooo much better.

George Orwell had it right.

They're knackered if the 20s are their demographic. I'm 23 and thought it was desperately awful. Not to mention stupidly unrepresentative of the music scene.

I will second this, thought this about mtv and radio 1 for a while.... listen to other stations now because of it.

There use to be a time when age never mattered; it was just the music.

i don't get westlife, they are either ugly or carrying a few pounds, exactly what do the 12 year olds see in them? and where is the cool in listening to rehashed Barry Manilow tracks that your mother loved the first time round?

I thought that the show was going to be aimed more at album sales and more driven to show acts that might not be necessarily getting all the media attention  Last nights show was a sham and exactly the same as all the other music shows on at the moment. If they're going to be showing crap like Blazing Squad then the show should be on BBC not primetime on a Friday night :cuckoo:

Wasn't that impressed with the new look of the series. They obviously tried to copy the style of CD:UK with those competitions and news features. Except CD:UK is much better and features the delicous Cat Deeley too. That host Tim Kash will be the host of this show every single week, no more Gail Porter, Lisa Snowdon, Liz Bonnin, Jayne Middlemiss hosting the show. And far too much boy band coverage on the show like Blazing Squad.....aargghhhh I reached for the remote to turn over to MTV Dance while that rubbish was on.

Nope wasn't too impressed with it really. Sorry BBC. Only highlight of the show for me was Kylie Minogue.

I'm happy to say 80-90% of stuff that get's shown on TOTP doesn't reach my music shelves, or at least that's how it seems. Another thing i notice is just how far girls are going lately to sell themselves...i mean their music....i mean their noise.....i mean...... :D plus they just sound like choruses rather than full songs :suspect:

Surely if they don't play instruments they're not a band... the correct term for groups like Westlife and Boyzone is a 'Boy Choir' surely?

Boy karaoke in the Westlife case. Covers are OK if a new spin is put on a song, but that cover of Mandy doesn't sound very different from the original.

Hmmmm far be it from me to defend TOTP BUT...

If you watch a programme called All New Top Of The Pops you would expect that they only show pop music. Surely?

Apparently it pulled in 2 million more viewers but I suspect that will drop soon. Plus I give that freak presenter 1 month before he ends up on QVC...

The Blazin' Squad thing with al;l the people in hoodies was one of the worst pieces of TV I've ever seen. Topped almost by the spinning rope lady for Westlife.

The whole show was Car Crash TV, I couldn't keep my eyes off it.
