View Full Version : LOTR:TTT Sound query

I noticed when watching this the other night that my amp doesn't seem to think it's "proper" Dolby Digital. Usually a speaker pattern of lights appears on the amp from Digital sources (via an optical cable) to indicate 5.1 sound (including lighting up a sub indicator whenever it activates) but this didn't.
I don't know whether noticing this made me think the sound was a little "odd" or whether it really was, but has anyone got any idea of
a) what I'm talking about
b) why it's doing it?
Any other DD DVDs behave "normally".
Pioneer amp about 5 years old btw - VSA-E06 I think off the top of my head - and a Tosh 220e player.

Is this the normal version or the extended version?

Sorry, Extended
mmm nowt wrong with my R1 extended.
If possible try a phono cable between the digital coax, if that works then its the optical...which it probly is, but try cleaning the ends of the cable and the ports before buying a new one.
Though when mine broke it created choppy sound.

Try turning of the amp and powering it on again, mine occasionally does this, usually changing source and back again does the trick.

Nah, other films "work" fine, so it's not the cable. I've tried powering off as well to no avail.
Wonder if it's anything to do with the fact that it's 6.1 DD rather than 5.1?

Shouldn't be, DD6.1 is actually just 5.1 with the 6th channel matrixed in to the rear two channels, unlike DTS-ES 6.1 Discrete which has a discrete 6th main channel plus .1.
I am not sure why this would be happening, does it do it on both discs? Did the first one do it (LOTR-FOTR-EE) with the same DD-EX track? Does it do it on the DTS track (which you should really be using anyway ;) )

cept R1 of fellowship had a poor DTS track...not tried DTS on TT yet.

By "Poor" he probably means quieter than the DD ETS track.

I didn't think the 6.1 would be an issue. I'll check FOTR...don't think it did as I would have noticed (probably). And yes it happens on both TTT discs (R2 btw).
DTS...afraid not, amp's about 5 years old, doesn't know what it is :)
Hmm...might be time for an upgrade :D

Sorted it. Thanks to my wonderful problem solving skills I was actually basing the assertion that other DD DVDs were fine from before I went on holiday.
Somehow my flatmate had managed to switch the DVD Audio output from Bitstream to PCM. Don't ask me how - she can barely turn the thing on  :D
Figured it out just before watching some B5 and the difference was noticeable. Guess that means I'll have to rewatch TTT:EE tomorrow night. Bummer, eh :D
(still fancy upgrading to a DTS capable amp mind ;))
