View Full Version : Can scart cables fail?

I have a scart cable which I think is playing up.
I have been watching K-19 Widowmaker and the screen has gone pink and orange five times then back to normal.
I thought it might have been the DVD so I put it in PowerDVD and it plays fine. I then replayed the same scenes and it plays fine on the DVD player.
It is not the first time I thought thhe scart cable seemed iffy. Can this sort of thing happen. I changed the cable round to see if that makes any difference.
It sounds like a dodgy connection somewhere. Its worth checking that none of the pins in the scart cable are loose (try pushing each pin with you finger and make sure it doesn't push into the plug). If the pins are ok then open the scart plug and make sure all of the wires are attached to the pins, not just sitting on them.

I am going to borrow another cable.
It cannot be opened, it is sealed up.

yup, they can. Probably not common but everything can fail!
however it MAY be the connection, sometimes the plug socket gets 'loose' and the scart can work loose.
I had this on my tele and it had just worked loose, possibly by moving the wire, vibrations from the tele or gravity.
Try reversing the cable end to end.

I have bought a replacement scart. I needed to get with a flat plug rather than an angled one. This is because the two sockets are too close together, which means the scarts can hit each other.
The scart cable was all the way in the sockets. I have one cable called posiscart as it has a positive lock that stops the plugs from coming out of the socket.
I use R1 Fifth Element to test scart cables as I like colour of the film. The new cable looks fine to me.
One thing that I found out a while ago. This home cinema cables are quite heavy, and so if th equipment is on a rack like mine, the weight of the cable can strain the sockets I have the cables resting on the back of the rack and make sure I have them as short as possible.
I hope it sorts it out. The cable that was playing was a favourite but is a few years old.

I did that and managed to watch T3 fine. However, this wasn't the first time the picture played up.
It seemed a random thing. I didn't know when it would do it.
The TV my parents have was exhibiting colour shifts to red recently. Definitely the TV as the same effect would show on terrestial TV. Two days in the repair shop and it's good as...
